Because its important you know all the basics. This is a tool that I use all the time to create holes in a mesh and used to create a face so even thought it seems basic its actually one of the most useful(and important) tools in blender.
When you use the knife cut to make that shape in the square and you click again in the place where you started the shape to close the shape, how do you that? I understand how to make the shape with the knife cut, but I don't know how to close the shape formed with the knife cut. (Does that make more sense? I want to make sure you understand the question so you can answer it well.)

Bad tool to create holes, it's a good tool in general but not for creating holes... Boolean technique is way more precise

Ya it doesn't need to close as long as the end is touching the beginning then it will create the cut.

Easy you click again in the place you started so that when the line gets drawn it joins to where you started.
