@EvanM2007 They are not aloud to use real Federal Q's because of the noise that bounces off of the buildings. Same reason why they can not use them in New York.
It's a tradition for CFD trucks to have green lights on one side...It was originally based on the concept of green and red lights on the sides of ships and it's stuck ever since on CFD trucks.
im not sure about other area but in the chicago land area green strobe lights signify command and since the officer of the apparatus sits on the right side there are green lights on the right side of the apparatus
@mendylitz i think its like a boat, green on the right meaning you can pass on that side, and red on the left saying don't pass? put here in PA green means command post, we have one on our heavy rescue for our command post.
@mendylitz Chicago (and many of the surrounding 'burbs) put green lights on the rigs. I'm not sure of the guy's name, but I read that one of the early Chiefs had naval or shipping experience and brought the green navigation light to the rigs from that background.
@mendylitz A unique feature on the apparatus of the CFD is the green emergency light that is typically found on the right front of the apparatus, in addition to the red light on the left front. This tradition dates back to the 1930s when Fire Commissioner Goodrich, whose family operated Goodrich Transit Company, adopted the port and starboard maritime light scheme for all apparatus and firehouses.
@mendylitz the only reason that it is green is because of the glare of the camera the camera was not in full focus therefor the color came out to be green
@MATTYMO2014 I don't live anywhere near Chicago, but ask someone that does & they will say the same thing. Ask "rykember11". I think he may live there, but for sure he has gotten lots of clips from there. He knows almost everything. He could answer your question.
@mendylitz Yeah lots of studies coming out about visibility... one says red and amber on freeways are best, one says red and blue is most visible...then another says red, yellow and green blah blah blah....
I asked a guy that once and he said because 99.9% of their guys are irish, lol I thought they were all scottish, lol irish, scottish same kinda fireman. I do not know if that was true, but that is something we would do if we though of it.
You guys keep busy in Columbus? What's your busiest Company there? jobs per year? I was looking at this LAFD video house #9 They run 55 jobs a day? All medical calls. I do not think that would be a fun house to be at. I thought we run on a lot of that crap, but I guess that's all they do there. We have a choice, well our officer has a choice if we go or not. Depends on where the job is at and if they really need us there to stand around and look stupid.
I think our busiest Company is Engine 15 in Battalion-4, but our busiest Station is Station 2/3 downtown, it is the busiest station in the USA in 2001, but yeah we get too many EMS runs a day, about 4 or 5 Fire calls a day depending on the weather.lol
The green light is a tradition dating way back. One of the original fire chiefs had been a ship captain and felt that it would be easier to spot fire stations at night if they used the same lighting as on a ship. One side has green lights and the other red.
They soon placed them on the trucks as well. It is a common misunderstanding that it is because the majority of firefighters were Irish.
I have respect for anyone who can maneuver that thing through those city streets. Plus you got the people who don't even bother to move, making it even harder.
It's an eQ-2b, a.k.a the electronic Q. Real Q's are too loud for Chicago, as they are in New York and many other places. So you get the Q sound (somewhat) but at lower decibels.
yea the reason they have electrical Q's is because their in the city and the Q2b for instance is too loud and with the close proximity buildings it creates an echo and at full blast could break windows FDNY has banned the Federal Q's because of that some trucks in FDNY have normal Q's but most use electrical sirens but Chicago wants to at least have something close to a real Q so it sounds like a good old fashion fire truck so thats why its electrical
OMG get a REAL Q!!!!

@fdcadet 100% incorrect. An old comissioner was a former navy man and brought the green/red light tradition to the CFD.
