Sang Mozart's Requiem for our 9/11 concert. This piece was my choir's favorite. Perhaps it was because we felt so powerful belting "Rex." Anyway, this song still makes me feel like I can accomplish anything!
@BINGFRYSRDUN What an unnecessary comment: it might be a rather small choir but they lack nothing in quality or dynamics. If you think quantity is all that matters in Mozart's music, maybe you should listen to something else; because you certainly don't understand it.
@moltoallegro19 All I am saying is that is sounds more majestic and powerful with a larger choir. I am not one of those modern music lovers, but an avid fan of Mozart. Split-second judgements are not in order.
@BINGFRYSRDUN Then say that: "I prefer this when sung with a larger choir", instead of saying "sounds like it was sung with four pepole", as if this ensemble failed to do something they were supposed to do. I for one believe that the tension and precision in this interpretation more than compensates for a choir of ridiculous proportions, the kind we often see today doing wienclassical works. This is still a full choir and probably closer to the standards of the time of Mozart and his death.
@moltoallegro19 Though phrased poorly I understand what he attempted saying. It does feel in some points to loose the chordal quality needed in the louder parts which could have to do with the recording equipment used. The latter part of it does sound better. But at times it's like playing one of rach's preludes or etudes and leaving some of notes out because your fingers can't reach.
@thejazztenor I don't think that's a very good parable since everything that should be in this piece is there, and more. I do respect that one prefers recordings with larger choirs but the only thing lacking in this interpretation is volume. Not dynamics, nor chordal quality (this is the bloody Chamber Choir of Europe, Pete's sake) and least musicality. If there are some uncertanities due to the recording, I sure don't suffer from them - who judges a painitng by its frame?
@moltoallegro19 True, but you also think that nothing is missing so I see little value in if you like it or not. You are funny, but unfortunately your humor and typing skills are more developed than your ear. I am interested in what year this was recorded and where, since you say it's rather perfect. And just as a side note, the group doesn't make the recording. Max Q is a wonderful quartet but I have heard subpar recordings of them.
@thejazztenor But if I clearify myself by saying "interpretation" instead of "recording" then? I don't think there is anything wrong with my ears, quite the opposite. Anyways, nothing is missing in this interpretation. It is totally in style with the wienclassical ideals of the time it was composed. Many prefer the more romantic interpretations. I don't. This is Mozart.
@thejazztenor I don't claim that this is a perfect interpretation, but it's far from insufficient in dynamics and it does pay attention the details in the original score with a very wienclassical approach (that's what I meant by "everything that should be in this piece is there...", and that is - and was all along - my point.
The recording was made in Alte Kirche in 2001. Good day to you, hope we understand eachother better now.
@moltoallegro19 Like his paintings, compositions of Mozart's music will be based on what a composer's see as proper. Hopefully I have explained it myself properly :P

The salve me's which end this hymn are some the most sublime passages of music ever written, in my opinion.

Excellent choice of the time, excellent dynamics ... in short, EXCELLENT!
Do not forget that the greatness of Mozart can often be done with "any time" without compromising the beauty of the party!
