Liberal trade policies and free market economics during the last 30 years has lifted 500,000,000 out of poverty you pillock. The Thatcher and Reagan revolutions completely transformed the British and American economies for the better. Free markets have lifted hundreds of millions people out of poverty in countries like China and India. Take a look at Hong Kong. It is richer than Britain after 50 years of free markets. Protectionism is socialism, and history shows socialism is shit.

Second, as an American, I've seen my country decimated by free trade, studied our past, and wow, we were PROTECTIONISTS from the time of Jefferson who first proposed it as an alternative to Reciprocity to FDR - then from FDR we were Reciprocal Traders - until Nixon when Free Trade and Marketism began. Free trade hasn't decimated countries. Countries that have adopted liberal economics are doing a lot better than the socialist economies of the world. As a libertarian, I don't believe in the IMF shock therapies, because the transition from communism to capitalism requires patience and diligence, but countries like Hong Kong that adopted free markets gradually are very rich and prosperous, compared to places like North Korea and Cuba.

The United Kingdom was the most prosperous and industrial country prior to the Cobdenites (your type) free traders ending protective tariffs in 1840s, meanwhile the USA and Germany, mostly starting in 1860s under Lincoln and Bismark went fullscale Capitalist - ie. tariff protection, internal development of markets and to labor high wages - result UK's Empire fell below the USA 1st, Germany 2nd by 1900, and then by WWII was unable to sustain itself. Since our founding, America embraced an economic system of: government sponsored National Banking, to encourage enterprise and develop manufacturing/agriculture/reta­il in harmony ; Internal Improvements to build the infrastructure (ie. rail, harbors, roads, bridges) by government spending; and either protective tariffs or social tariffs - so our posterity inherits the wealth of nation. This system we called Capitalism and it was opposed to Marketism developed by your heroes who built nothing.

We have had some examples of free markets around the world, but we have fascistic corporatism now with central banks running the show with their banker friends. No governments have a role to play in ensuring that there are fair wages and fair prices for its citizens and for its farmers expecially - the Depression proved this - Governments have been behind most of our advances ie. DARPA, Government is not the enemy, it is in a free society, the actual corporation of the people, it supervises (anti-trusts etc.), promotes (ie. natinal banking), and regulates (workers rights against exploitation and pauperism - see Dickens), but not own, America's legacy.

Ridiculous...Government has a role in promoting the General Welfare, in providing for National Security and Defense, in Insuring Domestic Tranquility (law and order), and insuring PERSONAL LIBERTY...Private Business has a role in Retail/Agriculture/personal Services (barbers etc.)/ and Production - Government in promoting the common good and welfare (well being) of society supervises and establishes fair trade laws to insure protection for the businessman and worker. This is all how we did it.
