Do you use minis all the time or just during combat encounters? It seems too hard to use minis all the time in my opinion, like when players are traveling or in town.
@musicismyfavorite777 It depends. Most of the time the minis are out, but if the players are in a Inn and theres no combat encounter, most of the time we just role play. I try to use them as much as possible, but if I dont need them or I can make the players use their imagination, I'll do that
MOST new school D&D'ers are DM paranoid whiny a*ses that will only be pleased when Siri is taught to act as a role-play narrator. Because any human being running a game has an agenda (hidden or otherwise) and cant be trusted with authority. Its immature, and you come across as man-children that have never learned acceptance of authority is part of life (got a job?). Stow your adversarial vs DM attitudes, because its not doing anything for the hobby you supposedly enjoy.
hey im vary new to being a DM. me and some bud's from school got together to play D&D however im one of the only too that has ever played. as a result iv i volunteered to be DM because i played for about 2 years total and i have a relatively good grip on the rules. I dont even know how to start this endeavor. any advice would be super helpful.
So, My group and I are ALL first time players, I recently picked up the Pathfinder starter kit and I'm going to be the GM. Any more help you could offer would be great, I've read a good sum of both manuels but I'm not all the way through yet. Can I make up my own monsters? I'm just confused cause some people have been telling me that game has no limits and others tell me there are many boundaries.
Turtles go suck a dick LoL Any way The reading thing was funny like i understand what you ment i jsut thought the concept of reading to your friends make you a good reader ( Reader/reading in the Social way not the DnD way) if you understand Also Good news going to my first DnD Game on Sun or Saturday (4th ed DND - One-off adventure "The Second Son") Well tell you more after woulds
Hey, i just subscribed to you a few days ago and i've been watching your videos, they're really great, most helpful videos and reviews i've ever seen, but i am having the same problem with my players are CueBaudcot came to you with a month ago, if you'd be so nice as to help me in my own situation and give me the same advice you gave him, i'd appreciate it so much. Thank you!
all my players want to do is fight. I try to add story and dialogue and npc's but they are content with simply killing everything and just using their powers generically. Any advice on how to promote more creativity and concern from the players? I have played for nearly a decade but this is my first time taking the lead.
Try using more hooks in your dm'ing. If they aren't interested in dialogue and such, try making it more rewarding for them to interact more peacefully with other NPC's and other creatures. You can as the DM push the party in whatever direction you see fit, as long as you can inspire interest in it.
Iron Defenders! Speelock! Don't get the oil on you!
(if you read this, this is what we did in that encounter:)
they jumped on the roof, the wiz put the kobold to sleep, then they barricaded themselves in the house with speelock until she transfered ownership of the Iron Defenders. THen they tied her up put her between the towers, climbed up onto the towers, then covered her in oil and killed the ankheg.
Im new to D&D and i will be a good DM one day and this Vid has helped me get off on the right foot and have a good start, positive outlook and the right attitude for the Job
@Zzer0zZ For some reason youtube doesnt show me all peoples comments, so sorry for the late response. If a monster has ac over 20,say 26 as your example, you just roll 1 d20,then add up half level of the PC,the str mod plus, any other bonuses for hitting the pc has.
Sorry man, I set up a series of comments to go out and was sorting them, then my dsl went out. It looks like they all sent anyway, with a lot if wierdness thrown in just for fun. Sorry! But thanks for having a good sense of humor about it. :)
Good advice. So, do you play a very basic house ruled/rules-lite version of 4th Edition? It sounded like you do, but maybe I took that the wrong way. Lately I tend to dislike lots of miniatures rules, but to each his own. As long as it works for you and your group, and everyone has fun, keep doing what you are doing. :) I tend to get module PDFs (especially since there are some free ones out there). I highlight the crap out of them, and make notes, etc. Whatever helps me to run it.
@Samwise7RPG Thank you- I would say we are heavy on the rules-thats the reason we switched to 4th edition, because there seems to be a rule for almost everything. Some of the players that game with me are veteran gamers and we enjoy a "tight ruled" campain,on the other hand, they are very respectful in knowing I have the final word. (even in the real world some things cant be explained ) My players actually are the ones who want the tight rules. Since everyone knows the rules, the game is smooth
Really great bit of advice for new aspiring DMs out there. One thing I really like about Johnny is how passionate he is about DMing and Dungeons and Dragons.
I have been a DM for 30 years myself and if I could add any one bit of advice to new DMs it would be that there is no "wrong" way to play Dungeons and Dragons. As long as you, and your group are having a lot of fun and getting a great experience from it, you are doing it right. Thanks again Johnny, I always like your videos!
lots of great info
