I dont think canned foods last long, cos now they get expiration dates on all canned foods and package items, darn i wish canned foods would last loooonnnnngggg time. here in hawaii they spoil quick due to the high humidity here and heat, sucks!!!
sound like someone vacumming upstairs of the house, above nancy that is, and wow, how come you store sooooo much Large jars of foods?? oh yeah i forgot in case you get snowed in yeah? hugs stay warm, here its humid and raining, i just got thru blowing all that rotten trouble maker avacado tree leaves, i wish some angel man would come to my home and chop that tree down and toss it in our back down the hill river!!! pray i have a miracle in this!!!
@KahaluuMartyMom Eat Avocados! Sell them online! use the big seeds for stuff! Put a sheet on the ground to catch the leaves and then just lift it up and shake it into the compost.
@blackphonetic1 With a wood foundation, I think the hole we dug already is what is making the doors not shut properly and the drywall corners crack. Eeek.
Hi Nancy, although I'm not a Mormon, I decided that it would be a good idea to stock up just in case of emergencies like you mentioned earlier. I'm on a fixed income and with the price of everything going up, it never hurts to stock up on food and other necessities in order to be prepared.
By the way, I also keep my foodstuffs in the crawl space under my house, but I keep them in big Rubbermaid-type boxes. It makes it easier to slide out a whole bunch at once, & keeps the critters and moisture out. My plumber saw one very LARGE box I had down there, and asked me just where my husband was! I was happy to show him it contained only canned goods! LOL!
I'm not LDS, but I have always kept about 2 months of food on hand (plus some water) in case of earthquakes or other disasters. (I live in Calif.) It has come in handy when money was tight. I was particularly glad to have it when my husband and I, who worked for the same company, were both on strike! It's always a good idea to have basic supplies ready. Remember New Orleans and Huricaine Katrina!
no offense to any one out there but people that stock pile a years worth of food are ether nuts waiting for nuclear war and the supper flu in 2012 or Mormons. you dont sound crazy but i could be wrong; so why is it that many mormons stock pile food ???
We store food so that we are prepared. Many things can happen unexpectedly: getting laid off, serious illness, economic downturn, weather problems, lack of money for any reason, bad season for gardening, others in need of help... It is nice to always know there is food in the cupboard and no matter what happens to prevent me from going to the store, I'm still able to feed our family and others who may find themselves in need.
All one has to do is keep an eye on world events to foresee anything that is coming....hyperinflation is right around the corner and stockpiling food is a lifesaver. What if you got sick and couldn't work? What if you got laid off? Lots of reasons to lay stores by...Aesop wrote an excellent fable about this very thing "the grasshopper and the ant"
There are two types of people in this world...grasshoppers and ants. I'm an ant =)
NICE! If I lived there though, I'd dig out a larger space under that house and build some shelves. I'd also take measures to hide the entrance. Oh and while I was down there I'd make a run by the hardware store and buy some insulation for your floors. Your feet must get pretty cold in the wintertime.
I'm not religious but I'm a big fan of storing a year or two of food. I've added guns, ammo, metals, and all kinds of equipment that will allow me to live on next to zero money if necessary.
Hello Nancy, I was greatly interested to see the storage under the house. When you store the jars down below, do you throw an oxy absorber in there? What size or how many? What about DE or some dessicant?
No, not for war, mostly for just in case. If my husband got sick or lost his job, or if we ran into financial difficulties, or if we had some reason why we couldn't buy food, we have it here. We can also help feed those around in times of shortage or need. We've used it many times in the past!
I'm sorry, but no way do I want to go under my house! LOL I would just get willied out. We have such large spiders here, well, plus I'm between two swamps so it stays wet under my house a lot of the time, or at least one end of it. I'd never heard of this before. Thanks for educating me.
Hello, The first thing I wonder is if you considered attaching a string around each jars neck to reel them in as you use em? Not sure what knot you would use but I bet you are industrious enough to find out. Great info thanks a million or a billion in 2009.
That's an interesting idea! When the jars roll along the sand beneath the floor joists, I think the string would get wrapped around the neck. I also think If I had a string around each of 200 jars, the strings would get all tangled up! It's an interesting idea, though!
You have to be careful because it can be bad on your house if you dig down I guess!
I see all these fancy places back east where they cover the whole underneath of homes so that it makes it easy to store things and keeps mildew down.
I think I am going to have some closets built by a company called Treasure Valley Closets. He came out and looked at my pantry and said I have so much wasted space. And he is giving me a great price. Maybe because he is a friend and buys my paintings!
You really made me laugh out loud. I was doing a search to see about maybe removing dirt out of the crawl space to give me a bit of room for foodstorage and saw your movie. And here I find another crazy LDS lady. Where did you get all the glass jars?
I was wounderinf if anyone did that

Nancy,
I was thinking that if you tied twine around the neck of the jars you wouldnt have to climb in, you can just pull them to you.
What do you think?

It's a good idea for one or two jars, but with 200 jars, they'd get tangled up together.

@whitequeen96 LOL. That's very funny! I store just the big glass jars down there. It works well as the long term storage I don't need to access.

LOL! They came from Subway. Pickles and hot peppers came in them I think. They seem to work pretty well. At least they don't rust!
We dug out some of our crawl space, but I think the house is settling now because of that. It only has a wooden foundation.
So be careful where you dig! Grin.
I take it you're lds too?
