This is cool. I would perfer her to be in her C&O scheme. In order to preserve acurate History, you must have the correct railroad that owned the locomotive represented.
@Kleman09 it's not like it was a permanent change. It was operated in 1996 as a C&O locomotive. The kids that rode behind her in 1981-82 could care less whether the headlight was on the pilot or in the smokebox center with an eagle above it, but they can say that they rode behind a steam locomotive on the mainline. Living history preserved, even if slightly different in appearance.
Awesome! I rode that exact train when I was a kid. My dad was a paramedic and volunteered to ride it (to wash the the cinders out of people's eyes). I got to ride for free. It was a lot of fun to ride to Charlottesville and back. It's kind of weird to see it on video now.
Wow, the AUX is an Louisville & Nashville Berkshire tender trailing behind the 2716! I miss those tenders, even 765's AUX is a refurbished Louisville & Nashville Berkshire tender
Too bad NS probably wouldn't allow something like this today. Especially with the old friction bearing open window coaches. Too much liability, freight cars can't sue, yap, yap, yap. The only hope is to run on a shortline that has miles of track and is more liberal about running excursions with old friction equipment.
I was on this train as a kid. I remember it like it was yesterday. Like the other comment I rode both excursions every year with my Grandfather from Alexandria, to Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Front Royal! Great Memories!
I think that was the train I rode as a kid. My grandparents would take my entire family on a steam train excursion from Alexandria to Charlottesville, VA once every other year back in the 80s. So cool to see it again!!
Wow! I grew in up Covesville, 20 miles south of Charlottesville. I used to watch the steam trains roll by a couple times every summer. I miss the sound of that whistle so much. I was really exciting.
A roundhouse is being biult at the museum and 2716 will be moved into it when it is completed. I also read that the museum wants to run it again in the future when on the new river gorge excusions in West Virginia
I am currently presenting a multimedia program with a train theme for children, teaching lessons in life, train safety, and work with two volunteer train museums to help educate the public about train history. I would like to use some of your video in my presentations if you would grant me the permission. I need the best quality format you have but need only short clips 1-2 mins. Max. Visit my site for more info at getonboard dot us . I will be happy to pay for your time and talent.
@e44e33 I hear that since she was put back to static display that she's in real bad shape, and that it would cost like a million bucks to restore it if anyone had the money.
The whistle used on the 2716 back then will be used on the ATSF 2-6-2 I will restore in the future.

Was this the last NS excursion pulled by 2716 before 611 took over.

Looks like the 7/16/82 was the last 2716 trip. Then NKP 765 pinch hit for 611 for a few weeks.

This engine was absolutely gorgeous as a Southern locomotive. I actually hated to see it returned to a C&O.

I did also but I know the the NS steam program was looking at a fact that it was a
not so called Southern Railway locomotive but she ran. She is in parts
I think or on display at some railroad museum. I saw her at Logenport IN under
steam in 1995.

That would be appropriate. A C&O Kanawa running on the most famous stretch of the C&O mainline.
