Is there a better type of foam that is more plyable? I once looked into the style of dressform that you've made. After making a duct tape form and being disappointed with the pins that get glue on them, I thought about making one of these. I wouldn't mind the drama of the making it if the foam would be more sponge-like. Let me know please.
the cast were made with plaster strips made to make casts. wrapped humans in cellophane and vasoline. getting the cast off of the human was rather difficult.
the foam is A/B foam.
we never finished them as dress forms as the resulting form is to brittle to be pinned and stay on a stand. it's way easier to just buy a proper dress form.
@jayober you say the molds are too brittle to be used on a stand, what about laying them on the ground and just using the surface for other stuff (i.e. trying out patterns).
And i don't know if this helps, but I know a girl who used expanding foam to make props, she covers the mold in painters tape first, then newspaper then paper mache to make it more durable and sturdy.
@thekrystalmethod i'm not a clothing maker, nor was i the lead on the project. I just helped and filmed a bit. Our experience was that just getting the form was a pain, many separate steps, and almost a year to finish. the result wasn't something that seemed usable long term for making clothes. a real dress form will hold up to being pinned and taped and IMO, what we got would not hold pins well nor could you tape it without it falling apart. if you're crafty, then go for it!
How did you make the mold? What was the two chemicals you used? Is the expandable foam pin able? Can you make a video showing how you finished it ? Lol I want to make one myself
if you close the neck more (or cap it off) and use more foam it will be a denser material as it expands and has nowhere to go, so it compresses into itself..
what woman with the bright red hair is my future wife lol ;)
