In all my days of fishing I could never get salmon to bite well. It always feels like they're more interested in their mission rather than food sometimes.
I don't think I would be playing the harmonica that loud at that time---seems like it could scare some animals----but it is the ones that the sound attracts that I would be concerned about.
....i would really like to see how a person would use a[net] section small enuf to include in a backpack....to catch small or larger fish for survival.....i suppose it could be used for trapping animals of all sorts.....there has gotta be a trick to it.....besides trial and error
salmon jumping on either side of the boat. ... Couldve thrown the net from the boat a few times. He added that stuff to make the boat more stable.. it wouldnt have tipped.

@Willlovesmusic ...imagine if his outrigger balance fell off one side...he'd be calling his rescue buddy on his radio...that he doesn't mention he has.....prob.got a pistol too
@iam1inamil ... true but still i would have given it a try. that floating net and plastic hook did nothing. .. you will not catch me out in the Alaskan wilderness without a .44magnum or larger pistol
what i love about survivor man or bear grylls is different i like les stroud because he's more realistic yea bear is tougher and more extreme but he is in special forces and if somebody is not in the special forces and dont have the same body as bear does then there screwed!! still love bear though

hes actually a shitty survivor.. he used absolutly no resouces from the woods.. he could have created different styles of nets using a sapling bent into a hoop, also wooden spears for salmon.. the spear thing may not be the best idea but its alot better than that shitty hook he made... with dead fish guts? who uses that to catch a salmon?
Survivorman "Comedy" show is more like it! Funny how much "convenient" garbage is available: plastic for roof, plastic drum/tote to fill in shelter wall, big plastic water jug to put out shelter fire, discarded netting, old rope, blue 5 gallon bucket, mooring float, glass bottle....sheesh...what a joke! So much wrong with this episode! Yeah...no doubt I could do it up way better...and put on a few pounds to boot! lol ...that's NO joke!
@SuperDriedFruit Lesson learned that in remote areas of Alaska near the open sea head to a beach and start making a pile of junk one can use for all sorts of crafty things! Once the massive debris field from the tragic Japanese tsunami arrives on our shore in a year or so, Survivorman will be back on a beach in Alaska bulding an A-frame home with a Nissan parked in the carport! How bout surviving with less junk & actually figuring how to find food and NOT burning down the shelter! That was LOL!
if you woulda tied the floats faceing down would been like a pontoon. and you coulda wore the wet suit at night for warmth.think the squatch liked the music? i think they did shoulda left them a gift
@4veteran you're a pussyfaggot for discreditting the man for filming such quality show on his own while trying to survive. this is mainstream survival show, if you want some hardcore shit go find some in dvd, grumpy little malignant anal wart.
Normally I'm a fan of Les, but...surrounded by the bounty of the sea, he starved.
He harvested a tiny amount of seaweed. Seaweed has high protein and some carbs when you gather multiple types. Its micronutrient value is incredible, as well.
He's living in an intertidal zone... that means crabs (so build a basic crab cage ffs), it also means there's mussels, limpets and the like just begging to be foraged.
A throwing stick plus the rotten salmon as bait, would have netted some seagulls.
I find this interesting for back when i was 19 years old i was actually ship wrecked at thunder bay just west of where this guy was in the month of september. I had a pocket knife and a single book of matches i also had a couple of snack pak pudding cups and about a six pack of beer. I used the knife to whittle a pipe and an old nail found on a piece of drift wood and made me a pipe to smoke rasberry leaves which were quite tasty. I ate muscles every way concievable to man and ate a wild berries
@4veteran I watched a few eps and this guy is a clown, he uses his oar to bring water down the cliff instead of the plastic barrels he has in abundance, he tries fishing with a line when he has a net, why didn't he take out the net and try catching the salmon as they jump.
What clinched it was the scavenging of fish from the eagles, in a previous ep he stole meat from his huskies.
Go 4 days without food & and lack of water and tell me you can think logically. Whilst being so fucking cold it's unbelievable. Or so hot that your sweat lacks salt.
it's easy to say what you would do while sitting at home in front of your keyboard. If you were in this situation you'd probably die huddling under a tree, eat shit.
@xdir Les Stroud spent a year with his wife in the Canadian wilderness, with no tools and no civilization for hundreds of kilometers. They had to make everything themselves including making pots out of mud (which was very difficult to pull off), had to start each and every fire with a stick, and had to scavenge the forest for (about) equal sized logs (around 50 or so) to make a perm shelter for themselves. It's a documentary called Snowshoes and solitude. He knows what he's doing, asshole.
@SuperDriedFruit A whole year with no tools or civilization, making everything? including the Lithium Batteries and Magnetic tape for the Cameras? Hats off, this guy is truly amazing...
this program is too interesting. it is almost midnight and I have so much homework that I am dead for monday.. today is saturday.. sunday in 3 minutes... ahh. ths program is too interesting
@pikkparis (your comment was posted a year ago) it's 11pm, I'm watching a bunch of survivorman episodes, I have tons of homework due on Monday: I have to read a 450page book, compose a song on the piano, and study for a history exam... Argh! I gotta stop watching this!

If you want to increase the chance of catch, you probably should look for as shallow an opening as you can find.
best spot there is probably the entrance to the fjord
i got little to no fishing experience, but i'd imagine you'd catch all kinds of stuff, but kill way more animals than necessary.
ofcause for him he'd have to move camp or travel far to get to it so...

He's got nothing else to use as bait, and a spear would not work, because he can't use it in the kayak and salmon won't just swim up to him. :p

Hook + fish scraps + rope + rock + seagull = profit.
