When I first listened to Elephant Room with Driscoll, MacDonald and Jakes I was wondering what the big deal was. I wasn't really familiar with Jakes teachings other than the prosperity gospel stuff.
I had no idea that he didnt believe in the Trinity. And because of the language he uses which sounds very Christian, I could not discern the problems with the things he was saying.
I just wanted to thank Lane, Johnson, White and Friel for explaining what I should have discerned from the get go.
Regarding politics, it seems to me that a lot of people erroneously assume that the platform of their political party is the gospel when nothing could be further from the truth.
around 16 minutes you are talking about those who say something about being persecuted if others dont want their church to grow in certain situations. I know just what you mean. I went to a SBC church plant for a bit that used a lot of Lifeway and Experiencing God stuff, and I realized after awhile, alot of that ideology that says persecution was anyone disagreeing with them stemmed from those"off" types of programs being pushed on the church. Especially after the "Experiencing God Weekend"
@Outdoorsymaiden11 I hear you. It's the difference between idolatry in the form of selfish accumulation and sincere devotion to Christ. It's easy to fall in the trap of selfish accumulation. I've struggled with it in my life. Thanks to God's grace, we're able to strive to put away such idolatry.
Phil Johnson needs to do his homework before bashing other Christians like at 25:45, TD Jakes does believe in the trinity, as he made very clear at the elephant room.
@imsmeagol911 T.D. Jakes was anything but clear at the Elephant Room. He was muddy and confusing. He did say "one God, three persons," but then went on to say he's not crazy about the word "persons" and leans more towards the word "manifestations." Um, the obvious question has to be, "Why?" "Manifestations" is not the same as "persons," no matter how you slice it. If Jakes wants to be clear about the Trinity, why doesn't he just say it straight and be clear? He is revealing an alternate agenda.
I love how this is a video calling out people for making "Celebrity in Christian's", and the video starts off with a ridiculous montage of Reformers faces and annoying music... A bit deifying and "celebritizing" of them isn't it Lane?
@LinkD3 It's obvious that you missed the point of the video. Paying homage to others isn't the same as "deifying" or "celebritizing" them. "Deifying" someone is saying that they what they say trumps anything God says. That's what we're speaking about: accepting a popular man as ultimate authority just because he's popular. I find all Driscoll's sex talk ridiculous and think he's a tool, but you probably don't based on your favorites so we'll just have to disagree about that, too.
@LaneCh Wow... Driscoll bashing was completely uncalled for. And for the record, Driscoll doesn't talk so much about sex, it only seems like it because all people ever say about him is how he occasionally talks about it. The vast majority of his sermons talk are verse-by-verse exposition, NOT about sex. If you listen to the entirity of his sermons, and not just the ones that have hype around them, you notice that he only touches the subject as it comes up in Scripture.
@imsmeagol911 What was even his last book about? He is the New Kids on the Block meets Richard Baxter meets UFC Fanboy version of Larry Flynt. He needs to not only get a room, but also keep what he does in that room out the public eye.
@LaneCh And what were all his other books about? Doctrine, Jesus' life, Jesus' death, the church... All that and now a book, not only on sex, but on marriage that happens to contain a chapter on sex. Are Christians never supposed to talk about sex?
@imsmeagol911 Agreed. Never been so frustrated with the Reformed community (which I'm a part of) than I have been in the last couple of months in response to Real Marriage and ER2.
@Synexious You have to assume that both groups are Christian for your criticism to make sense. You haven't, so at this point, you're using a logical fallacy.
I'd be asking if the pastor and the elders are regularly discipling others and equipping them to do the same. Jesus didn't say go and get decisions from people to follow me; He said to make disciples. Some pastors mistakenly think preaching sermons is disciplng.
Another wonderful interview Lane, thanks for this great topic. Keep proclaiming Christ crucified for sinners and may God bless you in promoting biblical discernment.
I liked the topic about "numbers = success". But it seems the Biblical view is that success should be measured by quality of professing Christians, not quantity.
In other words the small church on the corner is more successful because the Christians are growing in their faith and being sanctified through conviction whereas the mega-church attender is only having their ears scratched.
Eph 5:11 James 5:20 Thank you for your 'spiritual common sense' When you get ridiculed and hated for pointing out blatant false teaching to fellow 'believers' You know their is a job to be done and cannot be backed away from even at the cost death. Are we followers of Jesus?

Great video Lane! I would never want to attend a large megachurch as you get lost unless you're very popular.

Good video but shame about the worldly rock music at the beginning.
