@attaen1 Hey thanks! I appreciate that. If you're a huge Elton fan, you may want to check out some other Elton covers I've performed on my YouTube Channel. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Elton's the greatest!
It makes me sad to listen because kids today do not understand the music us old fart understand and even if they get the correct notes to play using tab and what not, none of them understand how to play their instruments or even have an ear for pitch. Drums are a bit off, but I know the horror of dealing with drummers, so that is understandable and quite typically expected.
Forget my comment on the drums. I am an idiot. I see now he is 87. He is as much rock as he is probably Jazz and Big Band era. I knew I heard Jazz in there. He is just trying to make the song better. He probably goes back further than big band and even Jazz fo that matter. I would love to learn from him about music back then. God bless the old man and the gifts he has to offer. I wish I could learn some from him.
Thanks. That's actually my Dad. (And he's not on this video of Funeral For A Friend, but a different video on my YouTube Channel of Elton John's "Sad Songs") He's amazing. He did play drums during the Swing/Big Band era, and that's why I did my own blues/jazz version of Sad Songs. And as I mentioned in that video description, he was surprised that I asked him to join me, and there was no rehearsal whatsoever. Again, amazing.
Bravo! I understand what you mean by parts you disagree on you can practice till your fingers bleed you can perform this song by yourself and things are fine, until you play it before an audience, thats when all the tricky little passages EJ wrote and does so effertlessly goes right out the window and you find yourself at some crossroad playing chords that are not of the recording thats when you define the moment and become a performer.
- MCD of Bennie & The Jets - Nice performance Frank!!
absolutely brilliant! I learnt this by ear while at uni, and got home one weekend to discover my mum had found a really REALLY old EJ songbook of the goodbye yellow brick road album - I disagree with parts of it but most of the song seems ok, except the chorus.
Thank you for that! I would love to get 100,000 views, but I don't know how? Help spread the word! (I have other Elton cover performances on my Channel, too).
I play by ear, so I do not have any sheet music. There are a whole bunch of Elton John songbooks, so I imagine it must be in one of those. Good luck, and thanks again for your nice comment. (Have you subscribed to my channel? I will be adding more Elton and Beatles songs soon)
i loved your rendition.. correct me if i'm wrong but i noticed a couple of times you putting in your own fills and i must say VERY tasteful choice of notes there :)
Hey thanks! I appreciate that. Yea, I do put my own stylings on most of the covers I do. I encourage you to check out some of my other Elton John or Beatles covers on my Channel (and subscribe?)
Wow, what a very cool comment. I appreciate that very much. If you like Elton John (and the Beatles), you may want to check out some of my other covers and subscribe, because I will continue to add more performance clips.
