  • Correction to the video: Alan Turing was NOT involved in breaking Lorenz, that was done by Bill Tutte and his team in the Research Dept. Max Newman then got involved and brought in Tommy Flowers from the Post Office Research Establishment in Dollis Hill. It was Tommy who designed Colossus and Tommy, Alan Coombs and their team at DH built it in 1943. Turing DID write the algorithms that Colossus worked on, many of which are still secret today but he had no hand in the design.

  • Just tol let everyone know, yesterday the Guardian reported Bletchley Park had been given Grade 2 listed building status :)

  • Where ever you are Alan...THANKS!!!!!!!!

  • I never knew that about the apple logo, what a fine tribute. I am English and it is a sad state of affairs that Mr Turing was treated as he was. The law at that time was indeed an ass

  • OK I've got it now

  • What is this song?

  • americans who happen to love their own gender, why whould they hate them? because you cant have war without hate, thats the answer

  • Not a very fitting reward for a man who saved countless thousands of lives.

  • 0:30 That is not an Enigma machine. It looks more like a Lorenz-based cypher system.

  • he was gay? is that true?

  • LFraserS said: "Contrary to popular belief, the Apple logo was not some kind of homage to Alan Turing". Ok, that's right. But it's a beautiful coincidence. Thanks so much Alan for your impressive work. Jorge Ramio, Cryptography Professor Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain.

  • @JorgeRamio indeed as you so correctly put it, a beautiful coincidence. Thanks for watching! And, of course, to Alan

  • @JorgeRamio

It is a myth that Apple computers developed their logo in his honor. The bite in the apple is to give it scale, that is to say that it will always be an apple, no matter how small it is printed. This explanation came from the persom who developed the logo himself, although he is happy the myth developed.

  • Great video! I'm adding it to my favorites.

  • Contrary to popular belief, the Apple logo was NOT some kind of homage to Alan Turing. It was designed by Rob Janoff in 1977 whilst he was working as an art director for Regis McKenna in Silicon Valley. He has discounted this theory himself in several interviews that he has done - it is simply another urban myth that has sprung up over the years that has no basis in truth!!

  • *throws iphone out the window.

  • Carpe0Diem8, please do not interpret my comment on the UK government's past disgusting treatment of homosexuals as any kind of inference that the government of the United States is any better. Indeed, the U.S. government today is still stuck in the bigotry of the 1940's towards Gays. One only has to look at the U.S. DoD's policy of Don't Ask Don't Tell and the many lives and careers that have been intentionally ruined as proof of U.S. government discrimination against Gay Americans.

  • Everyone, just to let you know on 11th sep 2009, the british gov. issued a formal pardon to Alan Turing's jail conviction.

  • I'm a CS major. If I ever meet Mr. Turing in this life or the next, I'm sure he'll be happy to know that they've come around.

  • didnt he basically invent the computer and also invent software as well?

  • Very impressive. Thank you for posting this.-

  • Alan was the true cyberpunk , thanks for the computers :)

  • This video just makes me sad.

  • I'm listening to a play about him right now..on l.a. theaterworks

  • thanks! i guess in making the video im trying to spread his story and also change peoples sterotypical veiws. ill try some more tags.

  • Excellent video of a (mostly) unsung hero of gay history. This should have a much higher view count. Try adding more tag words.

  • He was a genus. At our darkest hour we relied on Turing. He never let us down.

  • indeed, but unfortunately our old fashioned justice let him down at his darkest hour. still, he should be honoured as a war hero along with churchill, bomber harris, monty etc

  • I think he was probably the most important man of ww2

  • Unfortunately the Apple logo did NOT originate with the story of Alan Turing's death. According to Apple Inc., The name refers to Newton but also to knowledge, (the forbidden fruit) the colors of the rainbow in the wrong order stand for hope and anarchy.' The bite refers to the old slogan "Byte of an Apple" remember that in 1977 when the logo came about, Alan Turing's story was not well known.

And had it been, suicide would hardly have been a happy allusion for the young Apple company's image.

  • im sorry for any incorrect information in this video, however i am not inclined to change it then re-upload it. i read the logo story on a "fan site" , and it struck me as a reasonable explanation, and, as it were, a nice story.

  • why would he commit suicide by eating an apple laced with cyanide?

  • Some say it was because he wanted to live out his favorite fairy-tale, 'Snow White'. Other people, mainly his mother, claim it was an accident. Some people think he was assasinated because homosexuals were considered security risks.

  • the snow white seems reasonable and so does the assasination. i thought it was an assasination at first when i was reading how he died then i read he committed suicide i was like wtf.

  • For some reason I thought he had shot himself. When I read he supposedly killed himself via cyanide apple, it blew me away. When I read that he might have been acting out his favorite fairy-tale, 'Snow White', chills went down my body and I became frightened for some reason. If only he had lived in more recent times... I wonder what he would think of modern computers and technology, esecialy robotic humanoids and todays A.I.

  • he basically started AI although i dont think true AI will ever be possible. me and my friend did a mathematician project on him a couple months ago

  • Well, some consider him to be the father of A.I. but most people grant that title to others. Turing believed that computers can think and emulate intelligence, as well as originated the dreaded 'Turing Test', however the creation of the first basic A.I. wouldn't come until years later.

  • Why r u so obsessed with this guy? why? why? WHY?!!!

  • Why? Where the hell are you from? With out him U would probably be speaking German today. Can you imagine how many lives he saved with his genius?

How stupid could a country possibly be. Hitler most likely would have won the war.

All of Europe and the Russians and the US owe a Turing a great debt. The price we pay 4 ignorance is beyond measure. Dark age laws and attitudes are still with us in many ways when it comes to gays

This is the thanks we give him? Just stupid.

    t

  • thanks

    i agree

after all turing did for them, they still stuck by the status quo, and mantained their stiff uper lips, instead of doing the correct thing, which would have been to let him go quietly.

  • Thanks so much for doing this. No one came to Turing's aid in the British government, not even Churchill, the Queen, or those whose lives Turing helped save. For that, I say deep shame on England and the law is sometimes an ass.

  • "turing beleives that machines think

    turing lies with men

    therefore machines do not think"-

    alan turing 1950
