I just saw the show on Monday, February 15th at the 8 PM showing. I looked forward to seeing IN THE HEIGHTS but did not know what to expect from Corbin. I thought Corbin did a great job, especially following the likes of Lin Manuel Miranda. He didn't need to shine and I think he understands the role very well. The show is about community and the neighborhood. I can tell he did his research and should be commended on a job well done. Congrats to Dwayne Clark (who played Benny) and all the cast!

i just got back from seeing in the hights with corbin bleu as the new Usnavi and i have to honestly say that carbin in this role was awful. He was bland and just blened in with the backround. he was drowned out by his cast members. He did fine because the show is fantastic however as a lead he didnt own it. the charcters sonny and benny and the rest of the cast were fenominal but at dinner after the show my family and i noticed that we didnt even mention usnavi. he was not memorable; not good.
I saw this last summer. It is an amazing play and i think it will remain one regardless. Yes I understand that Corbin is not latino...He may play an AMAZING usnavi..lets not be quick to judge people ok? :)

It really upsets me that he is in this show. There are so many more talented and more deserving people to play this role. I can't imaging Lin Manuel Miranda agreeing to this if he had any say.
Lin Manuel DID approve it...it's on his site...he auditioned Corbin, and said he absolutely killed in the audition...and he even said he had his doubts. So, not only did he agree to it....he made it happen.
let's hope he can pull of the spanish because that's one of the key things to keep in mind in his role...he's a good actor and i love him but i hope he can really prove some people wrong on stage

It's not about how he looks! He could definitely pass for a Latino. It's about his roots, he doesn't have the Latino identity. Lin played a Dominican & he is not one but he is Latino and so are Dominicans. A latino can play a latino from another country and still be authentic. Corbin Bleu is just so bland & generic. You can tell he is trying hard but he still comes across as blah. It wouldn't be such a big deal if Lin hadn't made the show about Latinos finding their own identities!
There is no such thing as a definite Latino "look", only a stereotype. I'm Puerto Rican and my mother 's light-skinned. My grandfather had dirty blond hair and green eyes. I have cousins with blond hair and blue eyes, brown hair, olive skin, white, black skin some who are 6'2 and some who are 5'5. We come in all shapes and sizes. Being Latino is an identity. As for Corbin - CHILL OUT, IT'S ONLY ACTING! I'm sure he'll be brilliant. The creators wouldn't allow him to be anything less.

That said, Corbin isn't Latino, from what I understand, and Lin's defense of that aspect was a bit lacking, especially since it's so central.
Overall, though, hopes that he'll fail will only hurt the show. Don't do that.

You guys, I know you might be judging because a non-hispanic kid from high school musical is going to play Usnavi but maybe you should give him a chance. Maybe he will be really good. And if you guys care about this show running for a long time, this move of casting a movie star could boost ticket sales and really get people coming to see ITH.
but he has said more than once how part of writing this show was writing characters for latinos, since when he was growing up the only ones out there were Bernardo from WSS and Paul from ACL. I object to Corbin's casting simply because he doesn't meet the criteria for the role

And if you guys care about this show running for a long time, this move of casting a movie star could boost ticket sales and really get people coming to see ITH.

i'm going to be open minded and give him a shot, but i can't say i'm thrilled at this point.
for me, one of the most special parts of the show was the authenticity of everyone in the cast.

but he has said more than once how part of writing this show was writing characters for latinos, since when he was growing up the only ones out there were Bernardo from WSS and Paul from ACL. I object to Corbin's casting simply because he doesn't meet the criteria for the role

lin has been off the show for a while now. Corbin is taking over, someone else is gonna take over once he's gone, etc. thats just the way b-way works.

Lin-Manuel left the show last fall. Javier Munoz has been playing Usnavi since. Lin has said in interviews that he will be back inventually.
