  • I think this was definitely, a very underated movie.

  • I think I want to live in Sweethaven..

  • I was watching MLP:FiM anthem videos and then this came to mind. Okay, Bronies, it's time to adapt this song to the Equestrian National Anthem.

  • what a great movie!

  • Thumbs up if you think they should have had Eugene The Jeep in this movie!

  • this is the only movie that kept me sane during my 7 and a half week stay in the hospital...i dont care what Robin William thinks, he was awesome and so is this movie. ^_^

  • This song Sweethaven should be the National Anthem of America!

  • robin williams is the best!!! funniest dude ever... :D

  • Anyone who says this movie sucks can in turn suck it!

  • A lot of people love this movie. I certainly always have. I never understood why people hated it so much. There are bigger cinematic crimes made than this one.

I was never able to tolerate "Hook" another Robin Williams cartoon adaptation. The soundtrack also had a song on it that wasn't in the movie called "didn't we". I never cared for that song too much anyway.

Check out the trailer for "Love Stalker".

  • love this movie???..are you insane??? this is one of the worst movies ever made...

  • What Pirates of the Caribbean episode is this?

  • can't belived theyre furbished it such a shame! i love the old set!

  • i love that chorus of trumpets in the very beginning of the song :)

  • @starwarsfanboy3 yeah me too

  • carttoon come to life. love how popeye comes into town in his row boat lookin strong as hell with those big forearms.

  • just back from malta, and from visiting the Popeye village. The whole town of sweethaven is still there and you have to admire the wonderful job they did building it. Of course nowadays it would only be CGI...

  • Okay....good song...from a crap movie...based on a great cartoon!

  • @thx291 How could you not LOVE this movie? LOL.

  • I wanna live in Sweethaven

  • @srvfan454 Me too..LOL

  • i lovvvvvvvvve this village i went there not last week but the week before not everyday u get to go to malta and go to a place as famous as this!

  • i love this song

  • @pinkarcticfoxyy This song is the shit!

  • Picked this up at Walmart the other day for $5.. One of my all-time favorite movies as a kid growing up. My 7-yo daughter loves it now too.

  • I wish I knew the words- to have made such a sweet sweet haven- I want the sheet music! Why have thy strand us here, why havent I played this yet!- Sweet, sweet haven- God must love us.

  • I watched this movie when I was about 5 years old. My parents let me suck on a corn pipe in the movie theatre. I was Popeye crazy. Thanks for posting this wonderful film. Hearing this soundtrack lifts me. Now can somebody settle the Brutus/Bluto controversy.

  • not to start a fight essexbo but i why are there are no illegals in sweet haven ....just a thought

  • @clavin2007 because the illegal population wasn't the focus of the film...

  • This song has been stuck in my head for 30 years.

  • @GhostofCicero and that's interesting since this song is 26 years old..Ha ha

  • I want this movie. saw it as a kid.

  • I love the guy who chases his hat.

  • This movie is pure genius - it kept true to the origins and style of Popye. have to love the comical characters, like the mayor giving his speach to no one, the man chasing his hat, ect. all the characters are cartoonish yet very human. plus a wonderful score. its a shame Robin Williams doesnt like this movie, one one of his great roles

  • this would work great as a broadway musical

  • @Doug19752533

I totally agree. I've been trying to figure out how to obtain the rights to perform it on stage. I would love to do it.

  • where can i gert thius mp3?

  • The Anthem of Sweethaven, for all its innocent qualities, sounds semi-dictatorial.

  • @VanSisean I think that is the joke. It is a song that is sung by ignorant boors and fools who have been stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere.

  • There is something dark about it .

  • This was the best movie for a comedy cartoon adaption.

  • Darn it. I did not know that was Harry Nilson. I loved "The Point"

  • Lol at the man chasing his hat!! XD

  • The man chasing his hat is Bill Irwin, one of the great American physical comedians.

  • @jimraw1

Yea, I knew that after watching an episode of Cosby show and was like, Whoah, its the same guy. He's very funny =)

  • i hope i can get this on dvd

  • Ooh.. Me too :)

  • I just noticed that first NINE notes are the Star Spangled Banner. How have I missed that all this time? I love this movie. (Embarrassing as it is to admit.) :)

  • @whippetblues Yes it's a sort of anti-America (or satire of America), with the Star Spangled Banner mutated into the Sweethaven theme, which includes the words, "we the people" and "safe from democracy."

  • the comic strip just came to live, aldman did such a good job on this.

  • I love about this movie that the actors ham it up yet still manage to act convincingly--makes it seem half movie/half cartoon--which I guess is what they were trying to do given its based on a cartoon. Love the silly quirks, like the woman who always says 'my stars and gardens', the father who thinks everyone owes everyone an apology, and the guy who always talks about how he hates wimpy... hehe, I snigger just thinking of it.

  • KingofStarfox: Yeah. Really, this film was accurate to not only the early Fliesher cartoons, but also to the musical version of Segar's universe. The only characters missing are Alice The Goon (a she-hulk creature who communicates singals with beeps), Eugene The Jeep (though from the Popeye canon, the doglike Eugene always appeared to be something akin to a precursor to Dodo from Looney Tunes), and The Sea Hag (a old crone who makes Brutus/Bluto seem like a nice gentlman by comparison).

  • ...sailors have a propensity for small places surrounded by water...

  • Great song. Its now on my ipod... but your right about the soundtrack, "everything is food" is not on the soundtrack. That song should be on there.

  • I like the National Anthem of Sweethaven.....

I have the original music soundtrack album.

My only complaint about the soundtrack is that

the song, "Everything is Food" is not on the

    music soundtrack album.

I like the film though, did you know that the

movie set is still in Malta and used as

    an amusement type park called

    "Sweethaven"...You can visit "Popeye's house".

    :)

  • Hey,

Yes it is a shame that "Everything is Food" isn't on the soundtrack however the rest of the songs make up for it.

Yes, I go there on holiday every year. Malta is a beautiful country and a set is a definite must for me. I'm a major fan. Visit my website seen on my profile page.

    Thanks

  • i went there when i was a kid mush have been 11 or so years ago was great

  • wow I did not know that.... thanks for the info about the movie set.

  • Really?? Wow. Can you go to Roughhouse's and order a burger?? If I could, I'd ask if I could pay for the burger next Tuesday. Hehe. I'm sure they've heard that one before, though.

  • this films so shit its brilliant!even with subtitles on you still cant friggin make out a word! lol!

  • Now THAT is a great thing to know! I love that they did that!

  • @spaceman42 I hear ya. But, I LOVE Din' We; which was put in & NOT in the motion picture - go figure. I have it on CD.

  • @spaceman42 stfu

  • Wow, this really brings back memories.

  • Who is the guy always in the background like at the 2:04 mark?

  • I think its Swee'Peas real father.

  • Really? Thats interesting. How did you come up with that? I just happen to notice that the guy is in like 15 different scenes, in the back. It was done on purpose but I dont know why....

  • I only got the connection when he switched Swee'Peas' basket with Olive Oyl's when she was running away.

  • is he in more spots? ive never really noticed him.

  • never mind, i just read the rest of the comments. ill have to check it out. being a person who loves this movie, even though i abhore musicals, im surprised i missed it.

  • I know, watch the movie from the beginning. The guy is doing something funny in the back of most scenes with a surprised look on his face..

  • this film is awesome!!!

  • this soundtrack was the very first album i ever owned. wow, the memories!!! love it.

  • LOL. I was like 8 when this came out and I remember calling all my cousins, asking them if they would want to put on a play (with me doing all of the lip synching of course). Very underrated movie.

  • I alway's thought this movie was underated. Great performance, awsome music and song writing. Plus a fav of mine as a child.

  • This song is badass!!!

  • In a book about he movie it said that Nilson had 20 minutes to write the sweethaven song. He heard the Maltese Army Band playing the national anthem outside his window and he put words to it. This is supposedly the tune to their national anthem. How cool is that?

  • that clumsy guy is soo good, one of my favorite actors

  • I love the opening of this film. It plants us squarely in a live-action version of the Popeye Cartoons by Max Fleischer, circa the 1930's. If they had filmed it in B&W, it would've looked just like one of the original cartoons. Too bad it kind of falls apart at the end of the film. It's almost like they changed writers about 3/4 of the way through. But for establishing the mood for the film, this and "Everything is Food" are spot-on for capturing the feel of the original cartoons.

  • @browncoats4ever - The end was the only good part of the film...aside from this opening song. Everything else about this movie was godawful.

  • @thx291 bullcrap the whole movie rules

  • this was in malta want it?

  • This is the best song of the movie

  • Hear HEAR, bud!! =D Remember watchin this years back...Love the movie and the toon...

  • How dare you post a comment like this on one of my videos. This video is from a children's film and your talking about sex. You are officially blocked!

  • i know its none of my business but im curious as to whom you are talking to and what they said. how can anyone get sexuall references from this? its a beautiful song and movie. oh well, there are pricks out there arent there.

  • A cross between a cartoon and "McCabe and Mrs. Miller."

  • Barkun, I live in Key West and liven' here is like this crazy movie here... all we just need to do is sing this intro....

  • I have the sheet music and can now play the whole soundtrack on Piano! YAY!!

  • play some and post it!

  • @essexboi1993

    Good for you!

  • The original demo by Harry Nilsson is great too (though the lyrics hadn't been fully polished yet).

  • I have this movie on VHS, I really want to get it on DVD. This song is very nice. I also like the song where Popeye is singing to Sweetpea. I say the music in this movie really makes it that extra 10% better.

  • I love this movie so much!! Thanks for posting this!

  • I'd love to get my hands on the architectural specs for this town! Totally hap-hazard! I love it!

  • the set still exists.. its in Malta and is actaully a famous tourist attraction

  • Oh yes, I know that already. About how nails, lumber and shingles had to be imported from different countries to build the set. Still, it would be nice to have the specs. It might be nice to actually build a small model of Sweethaven someday.

  • Best song in the movie

  • what about everything is food? the line " everything is meat, meat, meat, careful what you put on your feet. Once it live on an ani-mule, now it walks along with you it could be food, everything is food" now thats a good lyric eh?

  • hehehehehe

  • It is ubiquitous

    And enigmatic

We won't be fooled by no

    Hot-dogmatic

It doesn't get better than that.

  • God will always bless Sweethaven.

  • I dont know why i like this song, but everytime i watch the movie i always find myself coming back to this part after i finish.

  • Haven't seen this in years. Love the opening

  • this movie kicks ass this one of my favorite parts

  • When, when, when will this movie get its due? It is a great piece of filmmaking! And Nilsson's songs written for this film are even more criminally underrated!

  • please...how can i get a cd of the song "sweethaven" from popeye ?

  • I can make you a copy of the whole soundtrack on CD just message me!

  • Highly unrated movie! Altman's career was almost destroyed by unruly critics!

  • again, thank you. i like to play this one when i'm waking up in the morning.
