this is the only movie that kept me sane during my 7 and a half week stay in the hospital...i dont care what Robin William thinks, he was awesome and so is this movie. ^_^
A lot of people love this movie. I certainly always have. I never understood why people hated it so much. There are bigger cinematic crimes made than this one.
I was never able to tolerate "Hook" another Robin Williams cartoon adaptation. The soundtrack also had a song on it that wasn't in the movie called "didn't we". I never cared for that song too much anyway.
just back from malta, and from visiting the Popeye village. The whole town of sweethaven is still there and you have to admire the wonderful job they did building it. Of course nowadays it would only be CGI...
I wish I knew the words- to have made such a sweet sweet haven- I want the sheet music! Why have thy strand us here, why havent I played this yet!- Sweet, sweet haven- God must love us.
I watched this movie when I was about 5 years old. My parents let me suck on a corn pipe in the movie theatre. I was Popeye crazy. Thanks for posting this wonderful film. Hearing this soundtrack lifts me. Now can somebody settle the Brutus/Bluto controversy.
This movie is pure genius - it kept true to the origins and style of Popye. have to love the comical characters, like the mayor giving his speach to no one, the man chasing his hat, ect. all the characters are cartoonish yet very human. plus a wonderful score. its a shame Robin Williams doesnt like this movie, one one of his great roles
@VanSisean I think that is the joke. It is a song that is sung by ignorant boors and fools who have been stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere.
I just noticed that first NINE notes are the Star Spangled Banner. How have I missed that all this time? I love this movie. (Embarrassing as it is to admit.) :)
@whippetblues Yes it's a sort of anti-America (or satire of America), with the Star Spangled Banner mutated into the Sweethaven theme, which includes the words, "we the people" and "safe from democracy."
I love about this movie that the actors ham it up yet still manage to act convincingly--makes it seem half movie/half cartoon--which I guess is what they were trying to do given its based on a cartoon. Love the silly quirks, like the woman who always says 'my stars and gardens', the father who thinks everyone owes everyone an apology, and the guy who always talks about how he hates wimpy... hehe, I snigger just thinking of it.
KingofStarfox: Yeah. Really, this film was accurate to not only the early Fliesher cartoons, but also to the musical version of Segar's universe. The only characters missing are Alice The Goon (a she-hulk creature who communicates singals with beeps), Eugene The Jeep (though from the Popeye canon, the doglike Eugene always appeared to be something akin to a precursor to Dodo from Looney Tunes), and The Sea Hag (a old crone who makes Brutus/Bluto seem like a nice gentlman by comparison).
Yes it is a shame that "Everything is Food" isn't on the soundtrack however the rest of the songs make up for it.
Yes, I go there on holiday every year. Malta is a beautiful country and a set is a definite must for me. I'm a major fan. Visit my website seen on my profile page.
Really?? Wow. Can you go to Roughhouse's and order a burger?? If I could, I'd ask if I could pay for the burger next Tuesday. Hehe. I'm sure they've heard that one before, though.
Really? Thats interesting. How did you come up with that? I just happen to notice that the guy is in like 15 different scenes, in the back. It was done on purpose but I dont know why....
never mind, i just read the rest of the comments. ill have to check it out. being a person who loves this movie, even though i abhore musicals, im surprised i missed it.
LOL. I was like 8 when this came out and I remember calling all my cousins, asking them if they would want to put on a play (with me doing all of the lip synching of course). Very underrated movie.
In a book about he movie it said that Nilson had 20 minutes to write the sweethaven song. He heard the Maltese Army Band playing the national anthem outside his window and he put words to it. This is supposedly the tune to their national anthem. How cool is that?
I love the opening of this film. It plants us squarely in a live-action version of the Popeye Cartoons by Max Fleischer, circa the 1930's. If they had filmed it in B&W, it would've looked just like one of the original cartoons. Too bad it kind of falls apart at the end of the film. It's almost like they changed writers about 3/4 of the way through. But for establishing the mood for the film, this and "Everything is Food" are spot-on for capturing the feel of the original cartoons.
How dare you post a comment like this on one of my videos. This video is from a children's film and your talking about sex. You are officially blocked!

When, when, when will this movie get its due? It is a great piece of filmmaking! And Nilsson's songs written for this film are even more criminally underrated!

movie set is still in Malta and used as
an amusement type park called
"Sweethaven"...You can visit "Popeye's house".
