Well I'm from the states... Texas at that... We don't sound anywhere close to what Americans in the north east (New York and Boston area) and yea im one of the few who can tell between Australian and an English accent... But I do see why people get a little confused because Enland did colonize Australia...

In answer to your question at the end,it's because most American people can't really tell the differences in UK and Australian accents. They hear some "r"s drop off and make their assumptions. They even do it with New York and Boston accents,and those are American cities!
