I really think Laura Linney was poor casting for Mrs. Adams. Both people are polar opposites; I could never see Mrs. Adams in Linney’s performance. Linney is too far left & to me it seems she wants to impress a bit of toady’s modern views upon Mrs. Adams of the past, but Hollywood likes to do that. I thought her performance was anachronistic.
Just finished watching the ENTIRE series in my high school history fact or fiction class. I absolutely LOVED it. It deserves every single award it was nominated for.
John and Abigail had such a passion for each other. I love the way he refers to her as "friend" Just a wonderful series. EVERYONE should watch it at least once.
John Adams was insane. One day he would be strong and proud, the next day they would catch him balled up in the fetal position crying that he is a failure and worthless. He had a very weird way about him and today would have been committed to an insane asylum if he tried to run for office.
@HypnoGypsy Insane..? I beg to differ. I had no idea that you had the honor of knowing Mister John Adams. I don't think you have room to judge because I highly doubt you ever went through a second of what he had. Perhaps if you ever experienced the things he did you would be acting the very same way.
All the shit those guys went through back then to get this country stated and liberal slimebags today do everything they can to destroy it, everything they can to put the people under the rule of the government through climate hoaxes, huge taxes, Marxist policies. Freaking unreal. Deport all liberals and give citizenship to Mexicans. At least Mexicans appreciate it.
I watched this movie in my social studies class today.Well, this is a pretty good movie, not,as of a lie.I heard that it's historically accurate. The kissing are the funny parts.xD
How so? You might say that it went to great lengths to highlight the fact that slaves were involved in numerous undertakings that defined the early state, but then again, considering how their role has suffered diminished representation for such a long time, what's a little overrepresentation?
And the characters within were never portrayed as flawless either.
I've squirmed at movies bending over backwards trying to be PC, but I certainly felt differently about this one.
I think my state of mind was not clear at the time. I rented the movie to watch on 7/4. Hubby twisted his ankle that morning. I guess I was just in no mood for messing with my holiday. LOL
Today is a better day though.
Now I say that they did a wonderful job at everything. The only part was when they tarred and feathered that dude, I really did not need to see his...uummm.....yankee doodle dandy..'[blushing]
Its not PC it just doesn't follow a lot of the popular myths that people were raised on. But the real history of John Adams is better than the popular myths.
One of the things I enjoyed the most is listening to how eloquently and respectfully they spoke to each other, even when they were vehemently disagreeing. Unfortunately, so many supposedly "educated" people these days use language that only demonstrates how uneducated they really are. There's so much more to intelligence than mere book knowledge.
benzride, you have made an excellent point here. It is so sad to see those who disagree on something resort to anger and immature name calling. I think it is getting to the point where one will not even voice his/her opinion in fear of ridicule and vicious attacks.
It is quite a sad thing that in this age of the internet and so many resources of information that we cannot have intelligent conversations on an adult level.

upsguy03 and jingling30: Your comments are both spot-on. I'm glad to know there are others that feel the same way I do and that there are others that haven't succumbed to the dumbing down of our society.
Thanks benzride. I really feel that most people really have similar hopes and dreams in life. However the differences emerge when many people have different ideas on how to achieve those hopes and dreams.
The ability to be able to converse, share ideas and be able to compromise with each other shouldnt really be that difficult. I think that too many people allow their emotions to override their judgment.
I read a recent review that stated this series is a bit too "intellectual". Good! Let the drooling dullards waste their time watching "American Idol" and "CSI: Whatever".
That Jefferson was a slick whore. Tried to squeeze on Abigal's jugs in Paris. Adams was hip to it on account of he knew Jefferson was trying to hump the Monticello out of his old lady. Bravo!!
AMAZING AND WORTH SEEING! Historically accurate detail makes for compelling viewing. Giamatti and Linney are briliant. Giamatti seems so much like this decade's Tom Hulce: he's an actor of great passion and intensity that can in a moment melt into a soft tenderness and then harden into true resolve and grit--all within moments. Few actors can match this flexibility and feeling. Great score. Great performance from Stephen Dillane as Jefferson. Must win awards or I never watch TV again.
Well, sorry! None of us are perfect, you know. Sometimes when we type so fast...it happens for the best of us. I mean, Youtube is still without a spellcheck and there is nothing we could about it. We are all human, so there you go. We make mistakes.
Thomas Jefferson brought Sally Hemings and other slaves along with him when he went to Paris. They didnt show that. Instead it showed him trying to charm the dress off of Mrs. Adams. Jefferson deserves to be on the odd ball 2 dollar bill. He seemed like a jerk.
The best miniseries I've seen since Lonesome Dove. I can't even describe how good this series is. It is like mind-blowing-ly good! Can't wait until it comes out on DVD.
There is another historical era that is rich, riveting and epoch-making, but NOBODY makes modern films about it: THE GOLD RUSH. Mr. Hanks, you'd be the man for the job....

Some critic wrote in Chicago's Sun-Times that the scene where the British Soldiers were on trial, played like an eppy of Law and Order. I didn't see it that way when I watched it. I love that they didn't portray the Brit soldiers involved in the massacre like monsters as most American Rev movies do. They were boys; So young, and that crowd had to be scary.

HBO is such a great channel. That Rome series they did was the best thing iv seen in years. We should make this freely available to everyone. No more Britney/oscar/rap/brain damaging crap.
Ive read the book and the author tackled the issue head on. John Adams wrote in some of his letters that he found it hard to fathom that the declaration of independence could say all men are created equal yet there is slavery. Adams himself however, never owned or used slave labor, and was totally against it for religious reasons, unlike Washington and Jefferson who owned upwards of 200 slaves each.
WELL I THINK THAT IT IS A TRAVESTY THAT NO ONE HAS MADE A MOVIE ABOUT THE TRUE ORIGINAL FULL CONSISTENT TO THE CONSTITUTION AND BEYOND FOUNDING FATHER THOMAS PAINE!!!!
WHO was against not only slavery, sexism, homophia, cruelty to animals and THE TYRANNNY OF RELIGION to corrupt the mind!
hmm, Paul's an excellent actor and is especially good at playing a miserable somewhat anti-social bastard with somewhat of a disdain for his peers. Adams apparently a somewhat similar disposition so the casting might work
Well that was his persona, not saying he wasn't a decent human being. Read McCulloughs bio on which this is based and you'll probably see why the casting director thought Giamatti would be a good pic.
cool, cant wait for it to be out. Its funny how all the extras are commenting. Ill jump on that band wagon too. Roto artists unite! I cant wait to see all the scenes i worked on. Good stuff.
Me too!! I can't wait either!! I absolutely loved the book, and I've been hoping for a movie on it since the moment I read the biograghy! Thank you so much for posting this!!! :-)
This is going to be beautiful. I have been waiting for this for years. It is not only one of the best nonfiction books ever written, but it is Paul Giamatti's time to shine.
Easily Giamatti's greatest performance.

I'm reading the book now. It is going to be hard for the movie to live up to that, but if it does it will be outstanding.

why did this book win the pulitzer what is it about it!
is it a nobel or non fiction?

Why don't you find out

WHO was against not only slavery, sexism, homophia, cruelty to animals and THE TYRANNNY OF RELIGION to corrupt the mind!
hornybodhisattva 3 years ago
Give it time... If we were to do all the founding fathers at one time it would degrade them unfairly.

I look forward to seeing it because it has Paul Giamatti. He is an excellent actor who never gets enough credit. Plus he is cute!
christy340 4 years ago
Paul giamatti is not cute! he looks like a toad!
he is a bit on a comedy character to play John Adams but we will see!

I am so excited about this! Although, I am a little dissapointed that Paul Giamatti is playing John...
Victori379 4 years ago
hmm, Paul's an excellent actor and is especially good at playing a miserable somewhat anti-social bastard with somewhat of a disdain for his peers. Adams apparently a somewhat similar disposition so the casting might work
murphycline 4 years ago
adams wasn't a bastard
Victori379 4 years ago
Well that was his persona, not saying he wasn't a decent human being. Read McCulloughs bio on which this is based and you'll probably see why the casting director thought Giamatti would be a good pic.
murphycline 4 years ago
why? Paul Giamatti is the perfect Adams
right body type and everything
Donutmangreen 4 years ago
He's not obnoxious and disliked ;)

This is going to be beautiful. I have been waiting for this for years. It is not only one of the best nonfiction books ever written, but it is Paul Giamatti's time to shine.
