Great to see the photo of Shackleton's grave, a proud Irishman and probably the finest Royal Navy officer of all time. I am sure he would have been proud of the actions by HM forces 30 years ago.
Really enjoyed the video as i was Royal Marine Bugler onboard HMS Antrim during Operation Paraquet working in the gunbay, also went ashore to sound "last post" for shot Argentine submariner, Ex RM Bugler Michael Brown
Awesome!!! I have allways been fascinated by operation paraquat! It made us all proud to be british! one of my earliest memorys as a kid is ofJohn Nott reading out that signal on the news that night and I've been interested ever since. :"Be pleased to inform Her Majesty that the White Ensign flies alongside the Union Jack in South Georgia. God save the Queen." Fantastic, don't suppose anyone knows who composed it? my guess is it must have been Nick Barker, Brian Young or Guy Sheridan? anybody?
If it hadnt been for a Seaman on HMS Endurance the re taking of South Georgia might never have happened when it did he probably averted disaster saving 600 Men Under Radar Silence ,Navigation lights off to rejoin the task force off South Georgia late one night off duty he went onto the STBD bridge wing seconds later he threw the bridge door open shouting theres a destroyer heading straight for usThe captain ordered hard to port , Antrim yrds away sailed down our STBD side all hush hush
HMS Antrim was in the thick of it and took a bomb that did not explode......you men and boys....because there were boys there on our ships.....you did as previous Royal Navy men did.....you did your duty and are a credit to the traditions of the Royal Navy........you were the BEST.
Thanks for posting this, at the time I watched on the news and like you said rejoiced at Thatcher's comments! Also managed to visit HMS Plymouth now in Birkenhead, I was amazed and a little shocked to see the systems our naval officers had to use to track aircraft and targets, we forget how technology has moved on, real skills in those days not all computers! Wasp helos, well blow me upon driving to Marlborough the other week one in a farmers field, mint condition ready to fly! Great vid!
