  • up keep on an engine is also part of it's efficiency $30,000 just for a valve job on a Mclaren that it will need in 20,000 miles you can get a built LS3 whole engine for less than that

  • American Engines are the Best an LS3 can do 780Hp.N/A@418LBS (they come stock in a GTR-780)not only that but they do far better on torque @low RPM displacment isen't the size that matters in a car weight is size that matters and if that light weight engine can still Be 6.3L but lighter than a 5L.it just makes sence and since Most driving is stop and go better Low end Torque makes sence also Be prepared for Americas NEW Auto Industry things look great for ford and chevy bad for every one else tho

  • @sirlonghair ls3's and a bmw v10 are on diffrents scales, also if you think an amercan engine is that much better let me point this one fact out to you. a dodge viper has a 5.7 liter or somthing along those lines and produces around 500hp and redlines at 7500rpms. a bmw m5 produces 507hp but. has a 5.0L engine and redlines at 8500rpms. the viper may have more torque, but the m5 has 5 seats and can go 202mph(if it has an unrestricted engine) when a viper barley hits 200mph.

I think you'll find GM and particularly Ford have been doing well in Europe for years - mainly because their European divisions cars are a LOT better than the US's, in every sense - build quality, performance, ride, handling, and economy - with emissions perhaps being one exception. Your idea that somehow things are looking better for US manufacturers compared to their foreign counterparts is just bizarre. You need to get your facts straight.

  • @rude90 I think My points are valid.Displacement is just a hole it has NO detriment to a car.Weight IS the proper measurement to call an engine large or small ford is building one hell of a duel OHC engine & Chevy has the mighty LSX(460 pounds)7.0L.&an even lighter Ls3(418pounds)6.3L.>& ford has a new CEO that has drastically changed how ford works&G.M. has two of the hottest cars in the world the ZR-1 & the CTS-V both faster than European cars twice the price

  • @sirlonghair European manufacturers (including Euro GM and Ford) build cars which are..... more sophisticated than their US counterparts, that's a fact i'm afraid. It's not all about straight line performance. No offence but you only have to look at the interior of the two cars you mention above to notice why they're cheaper than their European counterparts. And as for faster???? Take a look at the new McLaren engine - tiny 3.8 V8, 593bhp, 443lb, good on co2, not bad on fuel.......

  • @sirlonghair HP per lb? Since when has that been used? US engines are cheaper to maintain because they're bulky, low tech and are based on very old design's - hardly game changers. Don't get me wrong I still like the yank engine's, but claiming they're better somehow.....? $30k per service?? Where'd you get that figure from, that's not the case at all?! Overall the fact is the ZR1 wouldn't see which way the McLaren had gone - accelerating, braking or cornering. You get what you pay for!

  • @rude90 if you can use the word bulky about a 418 pound engine then a 443 pound engine would be bulkyer how about compare a Mosler instead like how about Tom nelsons 1800Hp LSX powered mosler and it was and is cheaper to maintain he got 19 MPG highway with it on a 400Mile one way trip to SEMA auto show it is a space ship in comparison to a McLaren and would leave it far behind in any race

  • @sirlonghair Hmmm, well the McLaren is rated at approx 24mpg (28 in US gallons) on a 'highway' run so no problem there. Yes it would lose to a 1800hp car in a stright line (going forward) - great, but round a circuit the Mclaren would annhialate it -124-0mph in under 5sec says it all, and lets not forget about service intervals too. By the way the 443lb I quoted for the Mclaren is the torque output and not the weight, all of which is available from below 2000rpm.

Interestingly though I did find this on a US car website "it emits less CO2 per bhp produced than any other internal combustion engine available today, including those used in 'green' hybrids." Haha. So much for the Prius. On that note, I must also admit the Chevrolet Volt is a class act when it comes to genuine alternative technology - a different league to the Toyota's and Honda's!

  • @rude90 they don't want to look bad that's why they don't list it I have to bet it's heaver I frown a bit on battery's making them produces quit a bit of pollution shipping materials mining,disposal and such I like the Idea of compressed air how cheep is a steal can and it don't wear out as quick as a battery and wen it dose wear out it don't pollute you just melt it and make a new one we will have electric cars they have to have something to pry the money from our wallets(BATTERY'S)

  • I haven't driven current BMW's but drove cars for a transport co.and drove all kinds of Bmw's I found all of them heavy lumbering with lots of body roll now the 1990 zr1 was incredible sick performance in durability and speed with GAS MILEAGE and comfort

  • @sirlonghair I think current BMW's are better. Now I have 2010 & 2007 E90. Engine and handing improved. 2010 E90 has softer ride than 07 E90. It is comfortable in NYC. I have owned 2004 E46 & 1992 E36. E36 was nightmare of mechanical problems.

  • displacment is a HOLE holes weigh nothing and the central cam push rod has less weight lower center of gavity(good for handling breaking and weight transfer)and can rev quicker it may not rev as high but thats what gears are for the Ls3 CAn handle 2500Hp and I have heard roumors of 800Hp N/A thats an amazing number 418 LBS no wonder the mild CTS-V can dust this elaphant engine BMW

"meshurment" "wear" "importaint" "allong" "engnis" I mean, whatever...but also, I was curious if you've been in a late model M5 versus a Corvette. I would definitely take either, but I just found the build quality/tech involved with the M5 (and every BMW to be honest) is above and beyond the majority (if not all) American cars. Typically people who disagree with me either are incapable of purchasing either or haven't seen both in person.

    I test drove the 63 AMG,while it is a rocket,the dash looked cheap,and the handling and response was not as good as the M5,the new M5 will be out soon and they are supposed to be sporting an 4.8L twin turbo,which should be cranking out 550-600BHP.

  • The new M5s wont be out till 2012,the new 5 series will be released in 2011.The new M5s will have a twin turbo 4.8L,this monster will be pushing around 600BHP.
