@cmlguerra haha yes i'd say that is an acquired taste... Portnoy is actually the only reason i got into dream theater. I only listen to the drum parts, eased my way into the parts with LaBrie (but still really only listen to Portnoy's drumming). After a while, got used to his voice and in some songs, seemed alright...

i love portnoy and i am sad that i did not stayed in avenged sevenfold cós they did a great job in ´´nightmare´´ and avenged sevenfold are the band of the moment and will be probably the best in future years, portnoy did right to leave DT cós they died 5 albums ago.....

@flyboy3d Exactly! I've watched the posts with Mangini in Rome and although he is a great player it's just not like with Portnoy! Mangini might be more technical here and there but his drumming doesn't have Portnoy's flow and musicality. Portnoy's drumming has been tailored according to the progressive approach within DT since forever while I feel that Mangini has a more of a rock, heavy metal approach. It's just as MP would play with Anihilator: he wouldn't sound as Mangini.

Now portnoy left and mike mangini is the new drummer so there is no a composer boss. that mean the new music is totally different. listen A Dramatic Turn of Events, pretty progressive, great disc, I give one dic more to mangini to show us his powerful abilities.

the one thing I have hated about dream theater for the last few years is the fact that portnoy was a freakin creative natzi. I know it was him that wanted to do blast speeds, which he kinda sucked at. I know it was him who wanted him and petrucci to growl in the songs.
