@mrzack888 It is a very overrated movie ,very dissapointed ,it was not 100% bad because the cinematography was good,maybe 1 of the few positive aspects from this movie,is slow as a turtle,and about the last 25 minutes of the movie the story got no sense,another of the few positive aspects of this movie is that only last like 93 minutes,so you don't waste much time of your life,hero,house of the flying daggers,warlords,curse of the golden flower are much better than this movie

Wong Kar-wai: Leslie Cheung, He was a very talented man, a great singer, which most Hong Kong stars are, singers as well as actors. Leslie was a very sensitive man, and was very hard on himself, but was very serious and very professional. It was a great joy to work with him.

I'm sooooooo saddened by the fact you can't get the original anywhere! It is longer and in my opinion deeper! Redux is better to some people cause they don't understand cantonese and the subtitles translation is like 100x better in redux.

I don't know if you speak chinese, but there's too much lost in translation... it's atmosphere and plot is almost unbeatable when you really understand what these people are saying. I mean, there is not much action sequel and even less in the redux version, the ones tat are left are cut in a way that you can't see what's going on at all, because it's supposed to be atmospheric than realistic...

No, Ashes of Time Redux was a disgrace.

They removed two fthe best sound tracks, and replaced it with garbage, then added pixar CGI effects.

Anyone who has ever seen the original will tell you that the original was a masterpiece, the new version is a tiny fragment of what once was the greatest film ever made.

Imagine Coppola adding CGI in "The Godfather" then changing the music to Celine Dione that's what Redux is.

Why are you even bringing comics into this discussion Ashes of Time was never a comic, it was a film made by Wong Kar Wai in 1994 it debut at Venice and helped make Kar Wai an international auteur.

Have you even seen the original film? It was the perfect film. WKW's best work.

I think you may be making the mistake of thinking that I'm judging Ashes Redux to Louis Cha's original Novels, when I'm comparing it to itself. I couldn't care less about The Condor Shooting Heroes. "Ashes of Time Redux" when compared to "Ashes of Time" is a failure. The original was an internationally acclaimed masterpiece, praised by filmmakers worldwide and took home many awards for WKW.

Even Yo Yo Ma has said in interviews that he did not believe the original music needed re-scoring, because it was abosulotely perfect and helped elevate the film to a higher plane. The only reason he did the new music was because Wong Kar Wai insisted.

Sadly this is what we got.

The Redux version looks "tampered with" and as a viewer I feel intruded upon. The original was a beautiful film. YOu cannot improve upon perfection.

The biggest problem is most people posting here are all WKW fans. Most fans have this belief that WKW is infalable and that nothing he does is wrong. That illusion was shattered when he released "My Blueberry Nights" and now this.

The thing with art is that once released to the public it becomes organic it no longer truly belongs to the artist once it has been unleashed to the world.

That's why people feel upset when remakes or changes are made to recognized masterpieces. It would be like adding a moustache to the Mona Lisa or adding an orange to Van Gogh's Sunflowers.

You cannot change a masterpiece once it has found it's audience, that's something WKW should have known being an artist of his stature.

Art exists in the moment, after thoughts should be left for a different works.

Well, I think art exists historically. But I think I get your your point, that once it's out there, any change is a differrent and poor copy of the original.

I think criticism is a healthy thing. Criticism helps me to further understand and appreciate films--both good and bad ones.

No the problem with "blueberry nights" wasn't white people. Nothing wrong with casting caucasians. WKW proved beyond a shadow of doubt that he could work with white people when he made "The Follow" starring Clive Owen, and Mickey Rourke. The short film was a masterpiece, I consider it be one the greatest short films ever made. So, no, the problem with "Blueberry Nights" was not the caucasian cast, it was simple. The film just sucked! No excuses. It was WKW's fault.

@Xephon212 Your wrong! There were too many bootleg versions out which altered the film drastically from widecreen to fullscreen chopping the film up. Wong Kar Wai decided to perfect this redux version to be the definitive version and he succeeded. Check it out first before you knock it. I'm guessing WKW's reason for the Redux is maybe that the movie did not live up to the hype when it first came out. Just look at the cast. It is stacked with Hong Kong's finest actors and the budget was quite steep, but WKW is more known for CE, which was made in between shooting this and AOT kind of got lost in the shuffle because of CE and FA. Overall, I'm glad its getting a rerelease because it is a very good movie, a WKW movie that widely gets overlooked
