@noname75a Darkthrone and Emperor are really good Norwegian black metal bands from the same generation as Immortal. Burzum can't be ignored either, but is quite different, more atmospheric and in a sense melodic (but amazing if you ask me). Other than that stuff like 1349, Wolves In The Throneroom and Anaal Nathrakh can be mentioned as newer bands interpretating the genre.
@OptimusNice Darkthrone is hardly from the time of Immortal. Surely, Immortal was founded in 1990, but the great stuff is from 1997-2002. Darkthrone was a bigger part of the original black metal scene I would say, 1992-1996. Immortal has been called 'thrashened black metal', because this isn't really black metal. The old stuff was black though.

black metal was a movement made for norway-to bring about their heritage once again since christianity ousted the Norse way of life and religion, they felt no sense of identity anymore. Black metal is a revolution for the Norse people, to have identity in "normal" christian Norway.
@pnkrkr912010 The movement you mentioned was indeed a part of black metal, be it intentional or not, but not the primary reason. It was more of a revolt against the death metal trend at the time.
Either way It's good to see there are still people who actually do some research on the subject, because a lot of (rather annoying) kids still think it's all about blast beats, evil, destruction and satan. Just like a lot of modern (fake and wrongly labeled) black metal bands.

Since everyone keeps commenting on my previous comment, I figured I would actually explain my opinion. In order for black metal to be "true" it has to be boring and have dreadful production with lyrics about Satan and nothing else. Riffs can only have tremolo picking and nothing else. In order for black metal to be "true" it has to be boring and have dreadful production with lyrics about Satan and nothing else. Riffs can only have tremolo picking and nothing else. Drummers are only allowed to play 1 slow blast beat with no variations and bass players are not welcome. Since Immortal match none of this criteria they are not black metal. Listen to shit like "Goat Messiah," "Bestial Warlust," and "Satan's Almighty Penis." Then you will be true and the internet will like you

@FrostHammerBand and that's why while there is some "true" black metal which excels in creating great atmosphere, the majority is just boring rehashed ideas. Immortal really brings something new to the table for black metal while still keeping some of the key elements.

@FrostHammerBand Besides, Immortal Kicks ass, I think that yeah, Black Metal is my Favorite Metal Genre, the vocals are perfect, i don't like Deep Cookie monster shit, unless it's in Harmony with a higher scream we all know how brutal that can be, 1349 is another amazing band in my Opinion, read some interviews with the bands, they only use Satan as a Metaphor it's not ment Literally, he's the ultimate Rebeller against all, so he's a perfect Character to use reference too.
