ill admit that noone would be over 200pts these days.. but you really cant even say how shitty goalies are while watching gretzky HIGHLIGHTS.. lol go watch datsyuk or crosby highlights and the goalies look pretty shitty too..
I can't really appreciate these highlights seeing how ridiculous hockey has become. Half the goalies in the clip look like they have no idea what's going on. It's like comparing skateboarding in the 80's to skateboarding now. They're fucking nuts now.
@burmashavetom You do realize that Rodney Mullen was around in the 80's, and he's arguably the best skateboarder ever, right? There's a good chance that how the goalies look in the video has a lot less to do with how qualified they are for their job and a lot more to do with the fact that Wayne Gretzky is skating toward them at full speed.
@burmashavetom I have to agree that if you look back at the 80s, there are fewer "great" goalies than all the other decades. Im not sure if it's a byproduct of all the elite scorers in the 80s, but I think the two phenomena go hand in hand. Weaker goalies + greater scorers = Incredible goal production
Ryan Nugent Hopkins is the PERFECT example as to why Gretzky would still obliterate the NHL today. RNH is no more than 170 lbs soaking wet. Has the physical build like a 15 year old girl but is top 5 in NHL scoring this year. And Gretzky was ten times the player Nugent Hopkins will ever be. I honestly think that Nugent Hopkins will win a few art ross trophies in his career. Claude Giroux and RNH are perfect examples as to why Gretzky would still dominate. He's like RNH on steroids.
Wayne Gretzky proves there was more to evolution than survival of the fittest. He showed us that heart transcends the body... will, the limits of the mind.
Players today wouldn't play the way they do unless Gretzky had pioneered the game for them. It is unfair to compare them, because current players are standing on 99's shoulders to get to their level. @Theishtank Remember though, Crosby plays in a different era than Gretzky did, look at the game today, do the highlights look like they do in this video, did you see many 6`4 - 6`5`` goalies with massive equipment in Gretzkys era, a goalie that large being a common thing was unheard of in those times, now 99% of all NHL goalies are 6`2 +. I still do believe Gretzky would have dominated todays NHL though, but wouldn`t get as much goals, he`d be like a Crosby, imagine Crosby in Gretzky`s era.
@washintoncaps All of those players may be better than Gretzky skill wise... Hell, more than half the players he played against were more skilled. He wasn't a great skater, he didn't have the greatest shot, he wasn't an enforcer... @Vinny19rocks Gretzky's talent is not diminished because he had absolutely no fighting ability whatsoever. He wasn't a boxer, he was a finesse player who won hockey games.
@Vinny19rocks Gretzky was only ever a minus when he was a King, nobody on that team had a good plus minus because of how overpowered other teams were both offensively and defensively. He still put up good numbers despite not being on the well-rounded Oilers team.
@RyderRocks73 the west was a terrible conference in the 80's untill gretzky left. no western conference team other than the oilers were good except maybe the flames
gretzky was great but during the 80's all goalies were standup and just let him score. i doubt he would have over 100 points in his prime against butterfly or hybrid goalies. most of his goals were just dekes and bad goaltending nowadays 50% of his points would have been stopped but only because he changed the way the game was played so teams had to get better defensively and goaltending. for his time he was the best. but u cant compare different generations because the game is so different.
@Frozenbolt1967 Consider that one could argue the opposite. The rules today are much more lax for offense, giving him many more scoring chances. Pads are slimmed as well.
@ruccialexander yes but positional hockey nowadays limits breakaways and u have to grind most of your goals unless your kovalchuck so because gretzky was all flash and no grit he would have a tough time in this league. but he would get points dont get me wrong he just wouldnt have the record by a mile. i respect gretzky as much as i do jordan because he revolutionized the game and was playing 20 years ahead of his time. but nowadays everyone has the potential to be great not just a few
@ruccialexander pads are slimmed? pads are much larger now than they were in the 80's in the 90's they were bigger but that is when gretzky gto older and less porductive. i know everyone think gretzky is great and everything but from 1991 and on he was a minus player overall he was a plus player but in his last 8 years he was about a minus 80
it is very fair to say he was the greatest player because back in those days for a player his size to do what he did was incredible, you could absolutely man handle a player back than, in the current nhl gretzky would dominate.
i don't think its fair to say that he is the greatest player of all time because goalies have improved so much! they were always in standup position, theyd try flying pokecheck every breakaway, etc.
GRETKZY SUCKS hes the most overrated player in hockey,The best hockey player in history is alexander ovenchkin. hes scores so many goals hes captain of his team. Im sorry ovenchkin over anybody even gretzky
@rlystupidcomments ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL lol you actually made me laugh. ovy the best?!?!?!? lol dude pavel bure and mogilny are the best russians and could kick his ovechkins ass any day. so how come gretzky sucks if he has over 900 goals and ovechkin has 300? btw you spelled gretzky wrong lmao
Some one check that guy!! but hes too fast! lets gang up on him, then what can he do? wayne prob thought one thing, ill just pass the puck creating a 3 on 1. the man was born to be
@3jdoris are there style points in any sport? and watch how much he miisses the net by and how the puck bounces towards him not away from him he clearly did it on purpose. thats what made gretzky so great he thought outside the box and was creative in the way he played. he wasnt afraid to fail and thats what made him an amazing player that stood out in every game not just a good player that acts like a robot on the ice
@3jdoris Haha I don't think that Gretzky missed the net on purpose either. Still...I think the quick thinking he did after he missed overshadows the original screw up.
I guarantee that the flock of superstars after him that had to play a huge portion of their career in the dead puck era would have produced at an equal rate to Gretzky had they played from 79' and on. You can't deny that in the NHL, talent levels go nowhere but up. Players don't get worse, they constantly improve.
I'm not a fan of him, but Sidney Crosby easily has better vision than Gretzky, and anyone with hockey knowledge knows he has a better shot and hands. Skill-wise, there's no contest.
@11DNA11 I didn't say he has Gretzky's vision, I said his vision is better. 75% of people who admire him never have seen a game in the 80's. The style, the speed, the format, EVERYTHING was different. The only thing enhanced was scoring.
Crosby is a more gifted player, aside from the fact he didn't play in the 80's.
@ebtricks It's a good thing that Gretzky was the leading point getter in the 90's as well. This was done while spending the majority of the decade on average to horrible teams and being past his prime.
Gretzky has more assists in a season (163) than anybody but Lemieux has ever had points. He also has more all-time assists (1963) than ANYBODY has ever had points. Gretzky did not play back in the stone ages and there are many examples of 80's stars who were very successful in the 90's and 00's
@hockeyfan66 Look at his stats and you'll notice that the bulk of his numbers come from the 80's. Nothing wrong with that, that was his prime. I'm just saying that the league is undeniably different now, and that the sport has a massive influx of talent coming in. It's hard to say that thirty years later a player could outperform modern stars.
@ebtricks Oh I definitely agree with you on the fact that the league has changed! If you look at it on a player by player basis, the NHL today is stronger than in the 80's. However, the top line talent of the 80's (Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Bourque, Coffey, Chelios, Bossy, Trottier, Messier, etc) is just as good, if not better than the top end talent today. It's the bottom end players of today that are superior to their 80's counterparts.
@hockeyfan66 I think it was a bit easier for a guy to consistently be a superstar back then. I look at guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, and Perry, and you start to realize they're all below 26 years old. Very few older guys are still competing at the level they used to. The league is now designed to bring in fresh talent from the bottom up.
We'll wait ten or fifteen years, and then we'll see who's better.
you can say the competiton level has changed, but if wayne had the training, gear, sticks, and coaching and recovery items and overall new tech that todays players have hed do the same things even mroe. some people can let it go. hes the best. ever. no one will ever go for 212 every again. now shut up and be happy. now we got ovi sid (crosbys the best now but that opinion only) and stamkos seguin hall etc. just enjoy the game please. each game needs a great one.
The fact that some people feel that Crosby and Ovechkin would go back in the 80s and destroy Gretzky's records is laughable. Don't get me wrong, they are both great players, but not on Gretzky or Lemieux's level. Gretzky was far from his prime and had back problems when he put up 97 and 90 points in the dead puck era. The fact that people feel the NHL has evolved so much, that Gretzky still wouldn't lap the field is mind boggling to me. There have been many examples of this not being the case
1. Ray Bourque was a first team all-star in his rookie year and his final year as a 40 year old (2000-01). But nope…players from the 80s can't compete with these new amazing athletes
2. Lemieux comes out of retirement after 3 years in 2000 and puts up 76 points in only 43 games when he was obviously not close to his physical peak.
3. After the lockout, Jagr at the age of 34 (who was obviously below Lemieux and Gretzky in talent) put up a point total that Crosby and Ovechkin have yet to match.
@hockeyfan66 Agree totally. Lemieux scoring nearly 2 points per game in 2000 backs it up :) I'd like to see the current players score consistently 2 points per game. Although.. Crosby was in a really good scoring spree before he was injured.
alex ovechkin will go down as the greatest hockey player ever. after this unbelievable upcoming season more people will start to realize how great he really is.
Gretzky will always be considered the "Great One" but the level of competition today is a lot higher than it was back in his day. Scoring 200+ points in an 82 game season is unheard of with current competition. Hockey is on the rise and more and more people are playing. And to be honest, there are plenty of players better than him. Imagine Crosby, Ovechkin, or Stamkos if they had their current talents back in the day. It would be less than fair.
He was ahead of his time. What makes him Great is he Played the game with a better understanding of the game. If Datsyuk, Crosby, Nash, Ovechkin, Stamkos, ect... went back to the early 80's they would break his records. BUT without Gretzky these guys wouldn't be as talented to begin with. He raised the bar. He changed the game. Thats Greatness. When the Game has to learn how to play your way that is when you are the Best.
thats the same shit gretzky has been hearing since childhood...he would get killed in the nhl.....he didnt.....he killed everyone......you dont have to be good a D if you can score like him....he would still dominate today. there are smaller players now then before......he still played when there was big players coming into the league....today the nhl is watered down...66 was bigger than him.
everyone thinks people are faster and better than ppl 20 yrs ago..not true.....we are on a decline....more retards having babies passing shitty genes down....way back when my grandfather was a child if you were born lactose intolerant you'd die....only the strong survived back then. my grandfather used to run for days running after a moose....my generation cant even do that....everyone is a fat ass these days....why they seem to be faster and bigger is because of a bigger population.
@theaninymous Then why do world records get broken at events like the olympics? Happens every year. Most athletes are breeding machines, and usually choose women with good genes. Haha you're right, we should just let everybody with minor illnesses die.. Lactose intolerant?? R U fucking kidding? And why did you're grandpa chase a moose for days? was he an LSD addict? Good luck leading you're genocide movement in 10 years.
@theaninymous yea the general population is probably in worse health then previous years but to say athletes of 10-25 years ago can even remotely come close to today's athletes standards makes you look like a fuckin retarded old shit
if you put gretzky in todays nhl...the outcome is stamkos;crosby had 32 goals in 41 games this year thats pretty damn close to a goal a game...imagine how that wouldve been if he played with kurri and messier back then...u would get jesus christ on ice......crosby is better than Gretzky
@xXSNIPaRFACEXx Gretzky didn't play with Messier. They are both centers. Gretzky is better than Crosby as it stands. Crosby has the potential to be as good or maybe better, but we'll see if he can come back from this injury. It doesn't look good.
Yes, players today are faster and bigger and benefit from better technology... maybe if you took 80s Gretzky and threw him in today's NHL, he wouldn't be great... maybe he would be still. But think about it, if Gretzky were born in the 80s , Walt would be training him with that same new technolgy... Wayne would be getting all the benefit of newer nutrition, training, etc... plus he would have his hockey-sense... So ya he'd still be great and run circles around today's superstars.
Um, Crosby doesn't play the way he does today if Gretzky didn't pioneer it. To say 87 would have put up more points than 99 is ridiculous because 87 learned to play the way he does because of the way 99 changed the game.
He diden't only beat the players, he beat the goalies and he had a great team, i think the players had better skill back then, like dekeing, stick handling and checking but diden't do it because it was easier to die on the ice then it is now, gretsky would'ev showed more skill and would do more of the imppossible these days....plus a bigger stanly cup :)
@Ck1299 You know it's funny, the defense and goaltending have always gotten better with time, so it was actually worse in Orr's day than Gretzky's. Think before you speak.
For the idiots who blame Gretzky's success in Edmonton on Messier, Kurri, Coffey and Anderson, I just looked up the following stats: Kurri's career high with Gretzky-135 pts, without-102, Anderson with-105, without-72, Coffey with-138, without Gretzky or Lemieux, whom he also played with-77. The only guy from that team whos performance didn't decrease dramatically after the Gretzky trade was Messier and that's cus he wasn't even on his line anyway.
many of the attempted saves in this video looked like these goalies didn't even know how to play their position. there's one where gretzky is far right and the goalie dives away from the net....i wonder if he would have been so successful were there more mature goalies in front of the net? regardless of that fact, the man is a hockey legend.
@MrPs103 As I've said many times, Gretzky recieved the same training as the best players in the world of those days, and dominated over them. If he was trained with the best players of the world today, he would still be that dominant. You're right, he's a hockey legend!
Gretzky was GRAET, “THE GRATEST”, but would he manage to do the things he did if he had been so beat up on the ice like Forsberg for instance, just look at the Peter Forsberg # 21 Tribute Video(04:50 – 05:00) and you will see what I mean
@dephanus he didn't get beat up on the ice because he knew how to avoid the big hits. It's not that everyone was afraid to hit him and have to deal with Mcsorely or whoever else, Gretzky had a spider sense and angles himself in a way that no one could line him up. Credit to Gretzky for keeping himself mostly healthy allthose years.
Happy 50th Mr Gretzky!

@Frozenbolt1967 Consider that one could argue the opposite. The rules today are much more lax for offense, giving him many more scoring chances. Pads are slimmed as well.
ruccialexander 3 months ago
@ruccialexander yes but positional hockey nowadays limits breakaways and u have to grind most of your goals unless your kovalchuck so because gretzky was all flash and no grit he would have a tough time in this league. but he would get points dont get me wrong he just wouldnt have the record by a mile. i respect gretzky as much as i do jordan because he revolutionized the game and was playing 20 years ahead of his time. but nowadays everyone has the potential to be great not just a few
Frozenbolt1967 3 months ago

@kller04 Obviously not retard! There are no style points in hockey, explain to me why the hell he would miss an open net?
3jdoris 4 months ago
@3jdoris are there style points in any sport? and watch how much he miisses the net by and how the puck bounces towards him not away from him he clearly did it on purpose. thats what made gretzky so great he thought outside the box and was creative in the way he played. he wasnt afraid to fail and thats what made him an amazing player that stood out in every game not just a good player that acts like a robot on the ice
kller04 4 months ago
@kller04 Holy shit no he wouldn't! Missing an open net isn't thinking outside the box! He got a lucky bounce.

Vykkdraygo713 4 months ago
I guarantee that the flock of superstars after him that had to play a huge portion of their career in the dead puck era would have produced at an equal rate to Gretzky had they played from 79' and on. You can't deny that in the NHL, talent levels go nowhere but up. Players don't get worse, they constantly improve.
I'm not a fan of him, but Sidney Crosby easily has better vision than Gretzky, and anyone with hockey knowledge knows he has a better shot and hands. Skill-wise, there's no contest.
ebtricks 4 months ago
@ebtricks Dude. No one has Gretzky's vision but the man himself.
11DNA11 4 months ago
@11DNA11 I didn't say he has Gretzky's vision, I said his vision is better. 75% of people who admire him never have seen a game in the 80's. The style, the speed, the format, EVERYTHING was different. The only thing enhanced was scoring.
Crosby is a more gifted player, aside from the fact he didn't play in the 80's.
ebtricks 4 months ago
@ebtricks It's a good thing that Gretzky was the leading point getter in the 90's as well. This was done while spending the majority of the decade on average to horrible teams and being past his prime.
Gretzky has more assists in a season (163) than anybody but Lemieux has ever had points. He also has more all-time assists (1963) than ANYBODY has ever had points. Gretzky did not play back in the stone ages and there are many examples of 80's stars who were very successful in the 90's and 00's
hockeyfan66 4 months ago
@hockeyfan66 Look at his stats and you'll notice that the bulk of his numbers come from the 80's. Nothing wrong with that, that was his prime. I'm just saying that the league is undeniably different now, and that the sport has a massive influx of talent coming in. It's hard to say that thirty years later a player could outperform modern stars.
ebtricks 4 months ago
@ebtricks Oh I definitely agree with you on the fact that the league has changed! If you look at it on a player by player basis, the NHL today is stronger than in the 80's. However, the top line talent of the 80's (Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Bourque, Coffey, Chelios, Bossy, Trottier, Messier, etc) is just as good, if not better than the top end talent today. It's the bottom end players of today that are superior to their 80's counterparts.
hockeyfan66 4 months ago
@hockeyfan66 I think it was a bit easier for a guy to consistently be a superstar back then. I look at guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, and Perry, and you start to realize they're all below 26 years old. Very few older guys are still competing at the level they used to. The league is now designed to bring in fresh talent from the bottom up.
We'll wait ten or fifteen years, and then we'll see who's better.
ebtricks 4 months ago
GRETZKY IS THE GREATEST EVER.
you can say the competiton level has changed, but if wayne had the training, gear, sticks, and coaching and recovery items and overall new tech that todays players have hed do the same things even mroe. some people can let it go. hes the best. ever. no one will ever go for 212 every again. now shut up and be happy. now we got ovi sid (crosbys the best now but that opinion only) and stamkos seguin hall etc. just enjoy the game please. each game needs a great one.

There have been many examples of this not being the case
hockeyfan66 5 months ago
3. After the lockout, Jagr at the age of 34 (who was obviously below Lemieux and Gretzky in talent) put up a point total that Crosby and Ovechkin have yet to match.
hockeyfan66 5 months ago 2
@hockeyfan66 Agree totally. Lemieux scoring nearly 2 points per game in 2000 backs it up :) I'd like to see the current players score consistently 2 points per game. Although.. Crosby was in a really good scoring spree before he was injured.

When the Game has to learn how to play your way that is when you are the Best.

thats the same shit gretzky has been hearing since childhood...he would get killed in the nhl.....he didnt.....he killed everyone......you dont have to be good a D if you can score like him....he would still dominate today. there are smaller players now then before......he still played when there was big players coming into the league....today the nhl is watered down...66 was bigger than him.

everyone thinks people are faster and better than ppl 20 yrs ago..not true.....we are on a decline....more retards having babies passing shitty genes down....way back when my grandfather was a child if you were born lactose intolerant you'd die....only the strong survived back then. my grandfather used to run for days running after a moose....my generation cant even do that....everyone is a fat ass these days....why they seem to be faster and bigger is because of a bigger population.
theaninymous 6 months ago
@theaninymous Then why do world records get broken at events like the olympics? Happens every year. Most athletes are breeding machines, and usually choose women with good genes. @xXSNIPaRFACEXx Gretzky didn't play with Messier. They are both centers. Gretzky is better than Crosby as it stands. Crosby has the potential to be as good or maybe better, but we'll see if he can come back from this injury. It doesn't look good.
Sunderlanding 6 months ago
Yes, players today are faster and bigger and benefit from better technology... maybe if you took 80s Gretzky and threw him in today's NHL, he wouldn't be great... maybe he would be still. But think about it, if Gretzky were born in the 80s , Walt would be training him with that same new technolgy... Wayne would be getting all the benefit of newer nutrition, training, etc... plus he would have his hockey-sense... So ya he'd still be great and run circles around today's superstars.
daweller 6 months ago 2
@OvechkinCCM

BlackestBlood420 7 months ago

MrPs103 7 months ago
@MrPs103 As I've said many times, Gretzky recieved the same training as the best players in the world of those days, and dominated over them. If he was trained with the best players of the world today, he would still be that dominant. You're right, he's a hockey legend!

Gretzky was GRAET, “THE GRATEST”, but would he manage to do the things he did if he had been so beat up on the ice like Forsberg for instance, just look at the Peter Forsberg # 21 Tribute Video(04:50 – 05:00) and you will see what I mean
dephanus 7 months ago
@dephanus he didn't get beat up on the ice because he knew how to avoid the big hits. It's not that everyone was afraid to hit him and have to deal with Mcsorely or whoever else, Gretzky had a spider sense and angles himself in a way that no one could line him up. Credit to Gretzky for keeping himself mostly healthy allthose years.
