You know, the old lady didn't have to be so racist about it but she did have a good point. If you are going to move to a new country you better accept their customs. I always struggled with this as it is extremely rude and out of place for a white person to speak English in a Korean society but it is very normal and accepted for a Asian person to speak Korean in a German society.
Learn our customs and racism will be much less extended than it currently is.

Well, Germany does have an immigration problem. Though that's more an issue about the government not even admitting that fact and anyone who dares mention it being ridiculed.
The issue is not the fact that we got immigrants - The issue is that our country sucks at actually integrating these people, causing them to live among themselves with low social status. Some of them manage to integrate properly (hell, my family is from Russia), but look at the Hauptschule, for example, being full of Turks.

The revenge doesn't solve anything - the people who just watched should have said something in both instances. In the end, everyone has reacted wrong. I think this is more realistic than showing the "bad racist" and the "godd victim". It's quite a good portrayal of the problem.

I love this video...it makes me laugh every time I see it :D. The only thing I can see wrong with it (not with me but with others that may think this way), is that many people will just look at that and go on about "Germans being Nazis" and crap like that, that isn't true. As a black woman living in Germany I must say I face racism on a daily basis, not only from Germans but other immigrants from Iran, Turkey, India and Pakistan. Racism needs to stop. German is not a place for blacks.

i saw some black peoples working in some hospitals. in nike hamburg most of all models are black. in movies and in my highschool we had so many black peoples. and at the soccerleague and in the nationalteam we have them. we just have to be peacefull to each other. the germans and the immigrants.
Also, a direct translation of "Schwarzfahrer" is black rider. But, in German, a Schwarzfahrer is someone who illegally rides with public transportation without paying. The film cleverly has many messages.

I'm sure a lot of people have mentioned this already, but the German use of Neger is not the same as the English equivalent of nigger. It is more closely associated with the word negro. Negro is black in many languages. So you have to look at it as more of describing a person as black, instead of in a completely racist context, even though the old granny is one harsh hag.
At around 6:30 and 8:40 the old woman uses the word NEGER, which is translated as NIGGER in the subtitles. In my opinion this isn't correct.
For a long time we used the word NEGER in Germany just in a neutral sense - it meant sth like "black man". I must admit, that within approximately the last two decades this word has been getting a pejorative connotoation, now it means sth like NEGRO.
But in any case it's not as hard as NIGGER in the English language.

The german word "Neger" describes the black race, best translation was "negro". You'll find in older books until the late 60s. We don't use it anymore, for it sounds alike with "nigger", but it has never been that insulting.

Genialer Film! Das Ende kam echt überraschend, damit hab ich wirklich nicht gerechnet. Der Film ist 17 Jahre alt und trotzdem stellt sich leider die Frage: Wie aktuell ist er? This is so good! I first saw this on Bravo when Bravo still showed things of quality. I think it took me two or three times to catch it from the beginning, but it was worth it! I finally found it by accident on DVD when a friend I had told about this told me that her boyfriend had it on a DVD of shorts he'd bought for a Henry Rollins short. Now, I have this and Rollins in one shot. Win-win!
Something the translations missed: When she explains that her ticket was eaten, she uses the word "aufgefressen"— "eaten up" as if by an animal, rather than "aufgegessen" ("eaten up" as if by a person). It doesn't really detract much from the point of the film, but I think it just emphasizes how low her opinions of foreigners are...
That was definitely a brilliant move on the black guy's part, though! XD

Really good short movie. It's about germany and the immigrants. The old woman shows a racism attitude. Germany has to be thankful to immigrants for the economic miracle of Germany. So I can't understand people who agree to this attitude of her.

Paul von Lettow Vorbeck's influence on the country was still strong, and many watu we knew still missed him and the German administration. One of his ex-schutztruppe soldiers loved telling me about battles which took place, and the courage of the askaris. It's in my book. It's so sad to see this poor young man suffering in silence, and what he does is pure magic!

As a black woman living in Germany I must say I face racism on a daily basis, not only from Germans but other immigrants from Iran, Turkey, India and Pakistan. Racism needs to stop. German is not a place for blacks.

My husband is a Lawyer, he works for himself, a client of his said to him, if he was not self employed but worked for a firm he would have problems at work because his wife is black, meaning me. He would never be accepted. There are NO black lawyers, doctors, pharmacists here. So u tell me? I will repeat Germany is not a place for blacks who want to advance in live.

it's just gonna be better here for the blacks.
i saw some black peoples working in some hospitals. in nike hamburg most of all models are black. in movies and in my highschool we had so many black peoples. and at the soccerleague and in the nationalteam we have them. we just have to be peacefull to each other. the germans and the immigrants.

Also, a direct translation of "Schwarzfahrer" is black rider. But, in German, a Schwarzfahrer is someone who illegally rides with public transportation without paying. The film cleverly has many messages.
Most definitely a thumbs up for me.
Racism is terrible, and people need to leave their little bubbles and see the world, and interact with others. You will see that we are all more alike than you think.

This is a very awesome short film. It was well done, and has a great message.
I'm sure a lot of people have mentioned this already, but the German use of Neger is not the same as the English equivalent of nigger. It is more closely associated with the word negro. Negro is black in many languages. So you have to look at it as more of describing a person as black, instead of in a completely racist context, even though the old granny is one harsh hag.

At around 6:30 and 8:40 the old woman uses the word NEGER, which is translated as NIGGER in the subtitles. In my opinion this isn't correct.
For a long time we used the word NEGER in Germany just in a neutral sense - it meant sth like "black man". I must admit, that within approximately the last two decades this word has been getting a pejorative connotoation, now it means sth like NEGRO.
But in any case it's not as hard as NIGGER in the English language.
Just wanted to mention it.

@qmnbvcxya they definitely meant to use it as offensive though. they also used "fressen" in the same sentence, and that applies to animals. the woman's character was obviously using it as a racial slur, even if it isn't always used that way.

@qmnbvcxya Das Wort hat trotzdem eine stark negative Konnotation (nicht erst seit den 90ern!) und wird entsprechend von der Dame verwendet. Für sie ist der Schwarze eben ein primitiver Mensch, der Fahrscheine frisst. Sie realisiert ja gar nicht warum er das wirklich macht. Neutral im Sinne von "schwarzer Mann" hat sie das Wort "Neger" jedenfalls nicht verwendet, wie auch. Von der Bedeutung ist "Neger" näher an engl. "nigger" als an engl. "negro". Daher ist die Übersetzung mit "nigger" gelungen.

LEO, als seriöse Institution webbasierter Wortübersetzungen bewertet NEGRO mit der gleichen konnotativen Stufe wie NEGER (-> pejorativ). @IAMLOST 3. Aber freilich haben wir sehr lange in Deutschland mit NEGER gar nichts Abwertendes gemeint. Nachschlagen vermag dich zu erleuchten, z.B. in diversen älteren Lexika der BRD und der DDR unter dem Stichwort "Afrika". ;-) ... 4. NEGRO, heute in den USA als veraltet und abwertend empfunden, bleibt daher die bessere Alternative, auch das GEFRESSEN ist hier völlig irrelevant.

The german word "Neger" describes the black race, best translation was "negro". You'll find in older books until the late 60s. We don't use it anymore, for it sounds alike with "nigger", but it has never been that insulting.

@CoconutIsle Neger does not mean nigger. It means 'black person' or 'negro'. It does not 'have the same meaning' or impact just because it sounds similar. I am sure being called a nigger is deeply unpleasant, but 'neger' is more descriptive than abusive. Not the same word.

@louisprosser1 i have lone believed that part of our problem with resolving race issues in America is our inability to accuratley name what we are.Aside from the occasional Johnny and Edgar Winter,there are no white people.Any child with a box of crayons can tell you that white people are, in fact, beige.The sickly ones are gray.Following this crayon logic,one can easily see that there are really no black people.They are brown.Or perhaps raw number.Or maybe burnt sienna.

Genialer Film! Das Ende kam echt überraschend, damit hab ich wirklich nicht gerechnet. Der Film ist 17 Jahre alt und trotzdem stellt sich leider die Frage: Wie aktuell ist er? Wie viele Leute denken noch so? Hoffen wir, dass solche Leute irgendwann auch endlich kapieren, dass sie Ausländer sind, in jedem anderen Land der Erde. =)

This is so good! I first saw this on Bravo when Bravo still showed things of quality. I think it took me two or three times to catch it from the beginning, but it was worth it! I finally found it by accident on DVD when a friend I had told about this told me that her boyfriend had it on a DVD of shorts he'd bought for a Henry Rollins short. Now, I have this and Rollins in one shot. Win-win!

Something the translations missed: When she explains that her ticket was eaten, she uses the word "aufgefressen"— "eaten up" as if by an animal, rather than "aufgegessen" ("eaten up" as if by a person). It doesn't really detract much from the point of the film, but I think it just emphasizes how low her opinions of foreigners are...
That was definitely a brilliant move on the black guy's part, though! XD

Really good short movie. It's about germany and the immigrants. The old woman shows a racism attitude. Germany has to be thankful to immigrants for the economic miracle of Germany. So I can't understand people who agree to this attitude of her.

I grew up with the watu in the bush in Tanganyika in the 1850's & 60's. Paul von Lettow Vorbeck's influence on the country was still strong, and many watu we knew still missed him and the German administration. One of his ex-schutztruppe soldiers loved telling me about battles which took place, and the courage of the askaris. It's in my book. It's so sad to see this poor young man suffering in silence, and what he does is pure magic!
