I agree that college helps, because journalism helps you learn what NOT to write as much as what. However, from an artistic point of view, I don't believe education is a prerequisite.
Other writers online who tell you that your only qualification for being a writer is the desire to become one are basically lying to you.
Depending on what kind of writing you do, qualifications vary. As a freelancer, i can tell you that a lot of publications won't even consider you if you don't have a degree plus experience.
My advice; Prepare as much as possible. College is the best route-not just for the degree but the writing time.
