Only a fool would think that they could get in a tin can and fly to the moon without that tin can doing nothing more than making sure your ribs were throughly well done. You would be cooked by the cosmic forces once you get to 500 miles in space. I wouldn't tarry long though, the radiation belts are pretty big. Me too, for instance what I have for the trajectory for Apollo 11, all information from all sources says it flew thru' omnidirectional protons in the inner VanAllen Belt of ≥1.0Mev flux ratios 100x10³/cm²/sec. and ≥100MeV flux ratios at 10³/cm²/sec for the most intense radiation Apollo encountered.
After the belts were transited, the ratios of Galactic Cosmic Rays are <1% of all radiation encountered by Apollo;-)

Unless you believe that another method of calculating heliographic longitude would get a different result. Reasons for not going back to the moon:
1) no point
2) we already have the info we need about the moon. It's a wasteland with nothing on it, or atleast on the side of the moon that we see. What's on the side of the moon we dont see? Government knows only.
3) You can blame not going back on our current budget, especially on Obama.
4) the majority of people's interest in space travel: How many ppl have you talked to personally and asked if they care about space travel? Not many.

@fifaplayer10 You clearly don't know about H3 don't you? Helium 3 is extremely rare on Earth, but it is critical to have to do nuclear fusion in the future. Nuclear fusion would solve pretty much the world energy problems as it is thousands of times more powerful than nuclear fission, but also does not create pollution or radioactive waste.
H3 is abondant on the moon and this is why we will have to go back, to get some for nuclear fusion research. If we can exploit it, energy problems are gone

the problem with obtaining it is that our budget just isnt allowing us to make more than 10 trips to the moon per year. We need a president that is willing to invest in NASA or any other private company to get to the moon.

do note that about 50% of the U.S military's budget is spent on NASA and about 36% of the U.S's budget is spent on military. That means we spend roughly 18% of our total budget on NASA.

@godbluffvdgg You are only seeing the present and not the future...You will see, when nuclear fusion will be researched enough that the energy output becomes way greater than any other energy source we have on Earth, mining Helium-3 on the moon will become a reality. The only draw back is the technology: because we don't master fusion yet, it is not interesting to waste money in sending equipment and men on the moon, but when we will, the moon could be mined and be cost effective.
