  • Listen people, plants aren't self aware. This director is using a concentration camp type scenario to make you feel something that doesn't exist. He/she could of done the same thing with rocks. Either way though, they did an excellent job of appealing to emotions.

  • @unsuperstitious It's probably just easier for them to pretend veggies don't have feelings or that they grow from dirt instead of worm manure

  • plant slaughter..? they have feelings too?

  • Wii would like to...plant.

  • i dont understand!

  • makes one feel sorry for the shrub

  • @recon4228 I agree

  • this was amazing.

  • I like.

  • horror film for plants

  • bored by the 3rd minute!

  • Gov Health Care = Produce or Else

  • Unsuperstitious, plants do not have brains therefore they do not feel pain.

  • The ones that are treated badly become "bad". The "bad" ones are then segregated from the "good" ones. This film kind of reflects society.

  • nice work! It reminds me some recent researches about the feelings of plants! I prefer black&white film for emotion films, also I recommend a couple more of fast frames in the growing of plants throw the seasons. Keep up the good work! Save the enviroment! Save our planet!

  • interesting take on life and death. A bit too dark for my taste, but still, bravo

  • Ah, but the moral is to do LEAST harm. Simply killing or sparing is not the topic here. Vegetarians are more nonviolent than non-vegetarians can ever be, and today that matters a great deal...no?

  • The fact one doesn't threat animals doesn't mean it won't threat humans.

Saying vegetarians are more non-violent than non-vegetarians is just silly.

  • It's not silly. Believe it or not: it's up to you.

  • Amm yes it is silly.

The fact one is violent or not is not dictated by what such person eats.

  • hitler was a vegetarian

  • @adnanahmad23 Hitler was neither human nor animal.

  • Are you trying to absolve yourself of guilt by saying humans are not capable of such atrocity?

  • No. Denying the privilege of humanity to those who do not deserve.

  • it wassent the plants fault....ignorant ppl

  • Wow. I almost felt sorry for the plant.

  • allright, that's it, I'm never touching another vegetablel. haha

  • WOW!! I am reminded of Jacob's Ladder but,for Plants.Loved it...BTW

  • Isn't Jacob's ladder where the guy tries to climb up to heaven?

How is that related to this?

Mind, it is very open to interpretation, this film.

  • i just shit my pants. i am an anti vegetate? o god, i love the chainsaw.

  • Then your still a big fat baby if you shit in pants.

  • The film was very fulfilling with a clear message about human nature and how we affect what's around us, without realizing it. Personally, 5 stars bueauitiful They love this type of short. Outstanding!

How can something as innocuous as a bunch of plants be so sinister and yet so emotive?

The faceless workers trying to obliterate the last vestiges of individuality is palpable yet has a deeper and unpleasant metaphor or analog for what mankind is capable of doing to their fellow human.

  • You only denied yourself the opportunity to understand it.

The film was very fulfilling with a clear message about human nature and how we affect what's around us, without realizing it.

Personally, I found it beautiful. Five stars.

Future, tell the filmmakers to bring it t River-run.

They love this type of short.

  • aaa

  • very stylish and great camera. the content of this short film could be a lot better though. I know, "Enter your text here" at the end means, you should interpretate what you've just seen by yourself.. but it still didn't keep me interested to watch the whole short without skipping.

  • the "Enter your text" in the beginning seemed like a mistake but it made sense in the end.

  • it scare the crap out of me.

  • Outstanding!

    Perfect.

  • I don't know why those people didn't get it I thought it was well thought out and the addition of the music pushed the idea even further. Good job all in all!

  • i really tried, but i don't get it.

  • BLEG!!! 9:32 minuts WASTED TIME OF MY VALUABLE LIFE!!

  • I don't get it

  • wow the sound recording and camera angles made this film very creepy to watch! Well done!

  • Can everyone realise that the film is analogous not literal...

  • A little bit boring, sorry, but good work.

  • This was very uncomfortable to watch for some reason

  • this is stupid,

    waste of time.

    black hole was cool

  • Pretty, yet boring and pointless.

Last commenter, part of appreciating films is accepting that others' experiences of it are as valid as your own.

  • I don't think art is ever pointless

  • ignorant people shouldn't post if they "don't get it". leave it to the people that do to appriciate it for what it is. also, along with that other person's comment about comparing plants to animals, that's right, but also remember that people can also be thrown away just as easily.

  • i dont get it...

  • amazing! i wish the ending wasn't so anti-climatic

  • This is one of the worst films I ever saw. Future Shorts, this is not the way of making an impression, there´s a lot of good films out there, why this? that´s right, it has a very good cinematography, but, where the hell is the story? there´s a lot of very good ways to waste the money and the time of people

  • dude the story is on the life of a plant and how it is similar to that of a animal that is grown for the soul purpose of being consumed by us humans or it might not be consumed but it can also be used for decorative purposes where they will be put in some random plot to live for a year and then wither away slowly. i can take it a bit further and say that this is a good way to say that "just because your a veterinarian dont mean that the suffering has stopped"

  • i dunno about the animal plant theory.. it feels stronger compared to the holocaust to me.

  • dude are you sure think about it. the differences are too much. in the holocaust people where taken and gassed in huge numbers. where in this the plants are taken and butchered for the purpose of being cloned and then harvested. to make more of springs. there is no mass genocide going on, but rater mass production. similar to that seen in mass chicken farms, or pig farms or cattle farms so on so forth. the only difference is that we dont see blood, or faces. so we just think eh what ever

  • The holocaust can be seen as a sort of mass production of death..

Dunno if you've ever seen the concentration camps now but the video was similar to the camps at certain parts. I wouldnt argue that the differences are "too much"

  • The plot is listed in the description on the right. It is about persecution and struggling. In other words, this plant is not like the other plants. It is not good enough. It keeps getting passed over and tossed aside, and yet it still manages to grow and thrive. If this were about the holocaust, they would have harvested the whole lot at once. The same can be said of the animal farm theory. No, the good plants were allowed to remain to continue to grow.

  • agreed

  • But it has, ya know this is a very emotional video and I'm impressed that they pulled it off but the fact is plants don't feel.... End game

  • I read the plot but the point is you could draw connections.

    I loved the video.

  • A waste of 9 minutes and 32 seconds :(

  • And now we have a smart person!

  • Thought provoking and intense. Love the cinematography and audio, couldn't have been any better.

  • And you are a narrow minded twit for believing so.

  • Hah, nice one... no

  • WTF WAS THAT MESS! The most retarded thing on Youtube is RIGHT HERE!

  • And you are a narrow minded twit for believing so.

  • this video was terrible, first off who cares about a shrub or what it stands for? i don't get the imagery and that shit half way through the video where the screen flashes colors gave me a headache, also i can't see how this "film" won three awards. if someone showed me this i'd either have them committed or demand my time back. i'm unsubscribing from this channel and adding the director to an online list of wasted lives

  • wow amazing work, you made this seem so dark and gloomy

  • Anthropomorphism!

  • This is the best short I have seen recently..., we are who we are, the plant and the gardener...

  • Wow, that was straight up scary...It has a great over tone to the realtion to WWII

  • Funny, i have hundreds of those in my garden! I lost the count on the number of times i did all that process!

  • cinematography and sound were awesome. Hard to bring about my own thoughts on what the short was about, but whatever it's intentions, I was captivated and stumped all the same.

  • ...i don't get it, but it was cool :D

  • this was retarded

  • interesting, i wonder how the vegetarians are going to take this movie =]

  • it's weird how this video makes you feel something for a darn plant.. it's not like it feels anything right ? soon enough i'll be sad to throw out an empty spray can!

  • you mean you're not already? YOU MONTSTER!!!! haha :P

  • sorry but i don't understand :D

  • i wanna know what the guy who made this was thinking.. i think it was something great

  • Impressive piece of art. Absolutely brilliant. They took something ordinary and inconspicuous and turned it into something very emotinal and touching. The imagery... oh well, i just love it :-)

  • i like it

  • real art, made of passion...

  • I like most of the "futureshorts" but I really didnt like this one.

  • This is freaking gay wtf is this? I only subscribed cause I liked the black hole one. This shit is just weird.

  • oh shut it, its an accuired taste.

  • You shut it. Your mom's an aCQuired taste. Learn to spell correctly, dipshit.

  • same hey.

  • lol same here ! black hole was awesome..

  • oh i like art, i watch indi films, foreign films with subtitles from around the world. but everything as art means nothing is and if it is so esoteric as to be anything well than buy some monkey feces thrown at a canvas

  • ANDY FITZSIMONS is a fucking bender for watching this video.

  • Too much emotions, but i can`t find ideas for life.

  • a little too deep for me.

  • Horror !!!

... and I loved it, 5 stars from me

  • I didn't like it.

  • i like creativity, but that was homoerotic liberal arts crap. if i hadn't read the info, it really would have been bullshit modern art

  • Having fun being force-fed by Hollywood?

  • beautiful cinematography

  • In comparison with other shorts...I'd say this is actualy pretty lame.

  • Wow, brilliant!

  • I got the eerie feeling that the plant was a Holocaust victim... and the nursery was a concentration camp. It is comparable to being the only person still breathing, buried under a cart full of your dead & decaying companions ~ who are being "processed" & experimented on just like plants. This film was powerful... I loved the close-up style and contrasting shots to the sky, but the end left me hanging.

  • why is it that so many people keep comparing this to the holocaust?

  • wat was the plot?

  • Brilliant!

  • Sound is EXCELLENT!

  • Coooool

  • wow did u really film every second of the cycle? a lot of footage

  • two years ago, or now, doesn't matter, at last i watched it, and it's awesome, thx

  • the shots were brilliant

  • the plant was a person..

  • great perspective und great sound!

  • I like the cinematography, very gritty.

  • I never before thought I could sympathise with a plant.

  • Well done - great sound effects!

  • leider irgendwie langweilig... konnts nich zu ende schauen...

  • huh.... is there some kind of shrub plague going on? what's with the white powder plant? i r cunfewzd.... D:

  • Its a chemical to help the cuttings grow roots. Its a way of cloning plants :D

  • oh. cool. :D thx

  • 4:24 - bring out ch'your DEAD!!

  • very scary... good idea

  • Now that's devotion. Tony, we'll need to talk.

  • why not. good idea. reminds me of my plant anatomy practical lessons on university.

  • interesting parallels..

but i wouldn't be surprised if someone turned it into an animation. jesus, they've made films from the perspectives of ants, bees, toys.. psh, why not plants.

  • I cant belive ... this is so dramatic ... futureshort know to make good movie

  • the worst furureshots movie :(

  • deep...

  • Aaaaah! Plant genocide!

  • LoL... =(

  • so what happens to the plant? '.'

btw that place was a mess and kinda creepy...

  • I have never been so emotionally invested in a plant.

  • haha i know

  • why is it so dark??

  • Modern Agriculture has no respect for nature.

Nice film, great shots, good job.

  • wow...

feel sorry for those walmart plants....

  • Amazing depth in sound. Great video.

  • Fantastic camera angles

  • i really don't see the point of this video. i thought that something was goin to happen... btw, how do you feel bad for a plant? It cant even feel bad for itself.

  • and you know this how? Have you been a plant?

  • I would hate to be a plant.

  • Today i felt sorry for a plant....

...first time for everything i guess.

I supose conciousness is relative. Imagine if there was some super intelligent species which was so sophisticated that, to it, our lives, actions, thoughts and emotions seemed as simple as a plants' are to us. Thought provoking video

  • Very nice! Seemed like very concentration camp-esqu!

    Good job!

  • Beautiful cinematography and I really loved the sounds throughout the film

  • What is all this blather about defining message? Art needs no singular message, art is defined by interpretation. In fact all that art is a set up for interpretation. This was stylistically appealing, told a story, and (for me at least) was emotionally evocative. If you look for "the" message in all art you see you will be sadly disappointed by a majority of the modern art movement. Simply put, have your opinion or don't, but don't complain about there not being a defined "message".

  • thank you. how very true!

  • yea your rite there is no one message but humans bu nature cant just say its everything and nothing it has to be a specific thing or its total hog wash

  • a film told through the eyes of a plant. I know I should care, but I don't,

  • Beautiful film. I don't know if there is really a message being presented here. The job of a film maker is to tug on the emotions of the audience. Kudos to Joseph Barnett for being able to do that using a plant. He truly turned the shrub into a character that you feel sympathy and emotion towards.

  • I disagree with GmoneyQ69;

Just because you don't personally like something, doesn't mean that it's "shit". I'll be honest, I personally didn't like this video. However, I still appreciate that Joseph Barnett can do a bloody lot better than me at it and I respect the piece as an art form. It's just the same as someone saying that classical music is crap just for the fact that they don't like or appreciate it.

  • Comment removed

  • @gmoneyq69: the only idiots in here are people like you, having no talent, no sensitivity and have to bash everything they don't understand because they envy those who can make art from dump placed on canvas.... see: if a moron looks into a mirror he will see a moron looking back... art is a kind of mirror. if you see stupidity in it... what does that tell us of you..?

  • what happens if the "art" happens to be some brick wall with a piece of gum on it and a gang sign in an art museum?

  • There's a difference between protensious bullshit (I'm looking at you modern art) and something that can provoke thoughtin a person without outright yelling it at you face.

If I see a "brick wall with a piece of gum on it and a gang sign", that will be disregarded as shit.

If I see this, put it in and out of context, whether I realize it or not.

  • i like you.

  • no problem for me... art can be everything. welcome in 21st century. your definition of art ("...in an ART musem!") belongs to the 19th century.

art is research and communication, not just a beautiful handcrafted piece of amusement!

  • i said "in an art museum" to show that they consider it art because like a famous artist made it and no mater what it would look like it would be considered art by the museum. everything IS art. its just your taste.

  • we would like to see your fantastic work then!

  • I was moved.

I'm not sure if a whole forest would have worked. It must have been single trees...

  • *yawn* couldn't stay interested in this one FutureShorts. Nice try...

  • The message is to the right. The plant is being "persecuted" for being sickly and not full like the other plants in the plot. It keeps getting passed over, because it is not good enough. And yet it continues to grow and thrive, despite not meeting the gardeners expectations.

  • Filmmaking: A

    Message: C-

  • I agree with chastash

  • The message is something like: "The plants feel it too "

  • Nice video!

    Kinda spooky in it's way...

Seems like it took you over a year to film that clip!

    Great effort I love it!

  • Captivating in many regards, but I personally don't like the message it's trying to convey.

Maybe if they filmed the destruction of a forest in the same manner, then I'd be moved. As it is, they're filming the process of producing commercial shrubs. They're making more plants, if you will. More plants= good.

Using pesticides, and chemicals? maybe not so good.

Either way, i guess, nobody's views will be changed by a youtube comment.

  • nicely shot!

  • I loved some of the camera angles. Especially the one it opened up on.

  • I didn't like this one. I get it, but it just didn't give me anything..

  • great stuff, can see how it won a few awards :)

That poor plant, it did nothing wrong! lolz

  • this was really nice...gives a new perception!!

  • i rather things with plots

  • It does have a plot a rather less concrete direct plot. and it's a really slow plot. also a slow pot....

  • This is really good! Love the color
