I have a 96 4Runner, Pretty much stock, and dont have any mechanical experience to speak of, so who do I talk to about finding upgrades? For instance that flowmaster 40 series sounds good. I use it as my highway rig though, so I cant retire her to mudding yet. I still offroad a ton, sand, mud, snow, etc but nothing I know I cant handle.

ok i have a chevy blazer and its causing me shit so im secretly trying to convince my parents to get me a 1998 sr5 limited just maybe i need a car to get me through college and the blazer is costing more money to fix then its worth so ive seen 4 runners with more then 200000 miles and i think it could get me through college hopefully parents get one
The 91 has a different motor than this 4runner. The 91's have a 3.0 and this one is a 3.4 im assuming which is one of the best motors toyota has ever made. I have an 01 4runner with a 3.4 and love it. I think its the best motor. No problems at all.120k and runs flawless. Would take off to Cali right now nd wouldnt think twice(im in KY. If your going to get a 4runner get a 96-02. You wont be dissapointed.
hey, for some reason I nvr got a message about this comment, but I just saw it. My dad has a 2000 and the 3.4 in it is a really nice engine. I know a lot of the 2nd gens had bad head gaskets and oil gelling probs etc. I would love getting a 96-02 but they are really expensive, and Im only 16, so im limited to 2nd generations basically. I'm just wondering if there is a good way to tell if the Runner has a bad head gasket when u look at one to buy
@haddix22 I have the 96, it has 170k and runs flawless. Underneath I have 0 leaks, this truck is going to go the distance. 3.4l makes a huge difference,plus all the other upgrades they did in 96, it's a whole different machine........
Forgot to mention it runs fine at 110,000 miles

I own a green 1996 4runner SR5 for 5 years, I take it off road every single day and never had a problem with the engine. Best Generation ever.

@blazercrazy99 Id say get one as soon as you can. I have a 1994 4Runner with 211,000 miles on it and it still runs great! No problems at all.

dude, what sucks is that the v6, the 5vz-fe engine only has 190 HP, i think it needs more than that (i own a 4runner too, 3.4, runs great)

@haddix22 I worked for toyota and the 3.4's are one of the most problematic motors they've made. Glad yours is doing so well.
