i was always taught to do it from the ankle. when your going fast there's no time and too much energy to move your entire leg.

if you have learned the right technique from the start then there isn't any problem with doing it from your hip when you tap fast.. and you get more sound :)

To tap from the ankle only is a skill. It makes your sounds cleaner and crisper and gives you time for more speed. Beginners tend to use their whole leg and/or hip.

okay... I just have to say that anyone who is watching this while starting to learn how to tap.... a shuffle, or actually any steps in tap comes from the hip... not from the knee... you have to have a controlled move from the hip and down to the knee, and from the knee and down to your foot you have to be lose and just trust your technique, much easier to make the sounds clean, and it's much better for you when you get better and has tapped for a while...
