One element of mental illness, or disability, is isolation. The person is isolated from others because they have a hard time relating to other people, and the other people shy away from them as well. What makes it worse, is when the suffering people are aware enough to know just how isolated they are. That's what you hear in this song. A moment where Syd was aware enough to know how messed up he was. I hope he had more happy moments in his life. We'll never know, sadly.

Syd really did not want to be replaced! The band members ignored all of his cries for help, instead they decided to yell to the public that he was crazy. Talk about asshole friends.

Perhaps if he was understood, rather then judged insane his music would be alot more poppular and more people would understand that he was not mentally insane, but brilliant beyond reason.

@HohMahGawd From what I understand, Syd lived in a communal flat where the people would lace everything with acid. The huge doses combined with the band environment really ruined things for him. There's an account of him being locked in a cupboard by some people who thought it amusing

The pressures of fame also really got to him, and he was being forced to tour all the time. If it was someone else standing and not playing on stage or TV, they'd be labeled an anarchist. But Syd was labeled crazy

He was also pressured to write a followup to See Emily Play, and two of his songs Scream Thy Last Scream and Vegetable Man were rejected. Then Apples & Oranges didn't chart

He really wanted back in the band. He would go to their concerts and point at David saying "That's my band!" He'd try to go backstage, but the security would remove him. He'd show up to the studio and not be let in, even as late as Atom Heart Mother

But he was apparently hard to work with too

@MichalFokt I read Ron Geesin said Syd wandered around the studio while the brass was practicing for "Atom Heart Mother".

Also read a rumour, possibly true, that the Floyd wanted to make the track "Syd's Psychedelic Breakfast", but he rejected it.

He was with David Gilmour and Richard Wright recording "Barrett" at that time, so I can see him still yearning to be back, but eventually he moved on. Although he gave it one more try after DSOTM's success, during the WYWH sessions.

@HohMahGawd I don't think the "insane part" is what's kept people from the music. It's just the mass marketing and commercialization of Dark Side of the Moon and everything after it. Meddle, which was the album before Dark Side, was without Syd, but I still find that to be underrated as well.

But yeah the "he went crazy" story is really shallow, and there's really a lot more to it.

The radio plays psychedelic music by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, so why not Piper?

@HohMahGawd this is perfectly said! really, this is the only thing thats ever bothered me about pink floyd after Barrett, is how they treated him when he was gone. Sure, they wrote songs dedicated to him, but Roger honestly seems very cold toward Syd in interviews.

Regardless of any idiots out there, Roger Keith Barrett was and IS a beautiful soul. Let him him rest in peace (and please God let me meet him one day up there in Heaven :)

Havent heard this song for years- since I had Barrett and the other solo album years back-well 20 to be exact.He is/was a genius and LSD only triggered what was in his head to start with-it doesnt do that to non susceptible brains-neither does any psychedelic-I know too btw unlike a lot of ppl who comment who dont have a clue

lsd is not the problume its the people who have taken it. know yourselve. lsd and psilocybin are mind expanding and if you dont have the mind to extend your learning abilitys and consciousness then you waves will crash into you. lsd reveals in a way so stronge people cant handle it. and in syds experiences it revealed his pre existing illness and he confronted it and reconized thus he left the band if it wasnt for lsd. he would still be in pink floyd and would of killed himself

gotta disagree with ya completely...even 40 years later no one really can offer a correct diagnosis and from what i read the other PF guys did try to get him to speak to various psychiatrists...as someone who's had real problems with post LSD psychosis after less than 6 trips, i am very doubtful that blowing your brains out thousands of times on acid results in a 'treatable mental illness'...IMHO i think u underestimate just how much this stuff can mash your head up...

I too made a reasonable amount of LSD trips when I was a lot younger than I am now (53), but my head is just as sane as everybody elses. I think that I can look further and learned to look at things a different way... oeps, does that sound mashed up???? lol

I agree and disagree with you. I think Syd got genuinelly mad, as far as schizophrenia is considered madness. His life after 1967 seems a mental downward spiral ending up in a recluse, confuse and almost totally non productive life. I guess there were lots of suffering involved. I think drugs were (at least) a catalyst. I do agree with you in that their bandmantes could and should be more supportive to their friend in trouble. Syd never left the band. They literally abandoned him. Shame!

no, gilmour helped produce 1 or 2 of his albums and took a bit of care of him but it was his sister who took over. Don't forget, around the end of his sanity, they already had no idea where was half the time. He had his own group of friends that left him after insanity

My last comment was in response to Babyhowdy (thank you again Shirley). I just wanted to add that I know he must have been so lovely just as you've said. I can really hear his great sense of humor in interviews, out-takes and from things that I've read. There is one out-take in particular ( I can't remember which- darn it) where he finishes his song and no one says anything. The silence keeps going on and finaa\lly Syd just says, "So...". And that's all. He was so awesome.

I got to know Syd about a year before he died and let me assure you that Roger's mind DID NOT permanently leave him. He was VERY lucid and had a cute sense of humour. He enjoyed painting, doing woodcraft, reading,strumming his guitar, taking trips into London all by himself and writing his book about the history of Art. His mind was by no means gone.

Sadly, Rosemary (Syd's sister)won't publish it. I have no idea why, because the last I heard it was sufficiently complete to do so-just needed a bit of compiling and editing. This same thing happened when my friend Arthur Kane died. His EX wife has his manuscripts for his autobiography, and claimed they weren't sufficiently complete to publish. If these women feel this way, then WHY won't they select a good writer/editor to help them get the books ready for publication? How sad. :(

I'd read an interview w/ his sister & @ the end of the last paragraph, it was mentioned that his sister discussed this w/ him shortly before he passed. And, just 1 more question.
