@MRLONGLIVEMUSIC1 True. Makes me laugh because people those days never even thought of things like some say in comments on here. It's only since the PC brigade dictated. They should just enjoy the music.
If there are one people who understand the black people it is the Jewish people,I am saying this as a Jew who used to go out trick and treating in blackface, but as a person who has seen it over and over again,I love Jolson, we need to take a step back and laugh at our selves.
Do we get upset when people of other cultures dye their hair blonde or red? Nope. People stop making something out of nothing. If someone wants to look like you - so long as they aren't saying or doing nasty things - take it as a compliment. Let's stop all this nonsense! People in the past didn't think the way we do today.
Al Jolson was in fact not racist. He used this to popularize black music. As a matter of fact black people in general were thankful to Jolson for popularizing their style of music to the white audiences.
People this was the days of Vaudeville. Blacking up was not an insult but a respect for the blacks and black music of the time. When Elvis Presley first sang people thought he was black. It was definitely not racist and was done in the spirit of entertainment and showmanship and a somewhat naivety was shown in performances at the time. This sort of thing was pure and no harm or racism was intended, Its a shame people get so aggravated and touchy over someone performing. :(
@Aphrodite2009 You my friend are right. For years i thought he was being a racist. However, again society, all white, had made him 2 be racist so we would not discover the black music of that time period.
Here in the UK, we used to have a television programme called "The Black & White Minstrel Show, where the singers "blacked-up". Killed off by the righteous PC brigade.
Excellent show, a victim of the left-wing luvvies.
