Buy FFF coex black powder it works great!! Dont get the 4 f that guy dosnt know what hes talking about the owners manual says nothing but 3f powder or youl F up the gun!! Omg so many F's!!
Nice Remington Marshall. I've decided to stay with real blackpowder for the authenticity of it. I think they recomend 3f for revolvers, 2f for rifles, and 1 f for cannons. But I'm not a expert and just learning about bp myself. Enjoy your new revolver!
I have one of these guns and I have a suggestions for you. First off don't use any more than 30G. of powder and I recomend 4F powder or equlivant . Secondly use 25G. of cornmeal on top of you're powder because it helps to take up some room in the cylinder so the ball has less distance to travel. It also helps cross cylinder jumping. I still use bore butter on top of the cylinder. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
I Don't know if someone told you this or not but FFFG is meant for revolvers,FFG for shotguns and large bore rifles and FG for muskets and small cannons.
MarshallZhokov- I just got an 1858 New Army Texas Revolver for Christmas. I also have a the 1851 Colt Navy. I don't use anything but Black Powder "fff". Reason is that other stuff could be a little too much power for those cylinder walls. Just my two cents!!! Take care and Happy New Year 2011 !!!!
@8StringKeith It's, Zhukov, Marshal Zhukov :) Well based on everything I have read the BP substitutes can be loaded as with normal black powder. What loads do you run in your BP guns? I'll probably do 25-30 grains and see how it handles it. The weather needs to shape up so my primers won't get wet!
@MarshalZhukov My apologies Señor :-) I have yet to run a load in my new 1858, but in my 1851 Colt Navy, I usually use 22 grains of powder. It seems that my accuracy is right on target with 22 grains. Again, it's just my two cents.
Make sure you dont shoot the maximum loads with that brass frame doing so can cause it to warp. I have a 1851 brass frame .44 and never shoot more than 25 grains. The brass frame is much weaker than the steel frame and cant handle 30 grain loads over a period of time.
@MrAndrew74sg Thanks for the info. Do you have any powder recommendations? So far, the Hodgdon 777 is what I think I will use in it. It's easier to clean up as far as I have noticed than regular black powder. Any other substitute recommendations?
The brazing of the loading lever latch was Probably due to excessive recoil(heavy loads). The sight work is common because most black powder revolvers(repro and original) all seem to shoot excessively high up to 50yds. The brass frame dictates that you Cannot use full-power loads. The recommended load with Pistol powder(FFFg) is 25gr or less. You Can use rifle powder(FFg), but start low and experiment. Any good Black Powder or substitute is ok. The Proper ball size is .451, but .454 will work.
@lostcowhand ran out of letters... The easiest and cleanest way to prevent chain-fires is to use "Wonder-Wads" between the powder and ball. The Cheapest is to use "Bore Butter", etc or simply Crisco After the ball(in other words, after the ball is seated, fill the remaining space with grease). Also, the nipples are made for No. 10 caps which fire fine IF the nipples are Clean. If you start to have FTF's, use No. 11 caps and simply crimp them a little.
@lostcowhand Cool man, thanks for all the info! I did a test fire of it, and shot 30 grs of powder. Didn't feel too stout, but I'll have to experiment with some loads I guess. I think I would prefer going the wad rout, as crisco or bore butter will get messy. Thanks for your input! I need a new battery for my calipers, they were dead and I don't have a conventional pair handy either. It seated in the cylinder nicely, and didn't seem to have to be forced heavily either. Thanks again!
O an the magnum term wasnt used till the 1930's when the .357 magnum came out!

is it possible to shoot this rapidly by pulling the triger and using the back of your hand to cock it after each shot ?

@MarshalZhukov I shoot 20 to 24 grains in my .44 "brasser." I have heard too many stories of brassers stretching into uselessness. :(
