Tony...thanx for the response. This slate tile is going to only be used for under a wood burning stove so there will be no traffic on it... Thanx again.
Hi yes you can cut Slate tiles with the diamond blade, no problem ... but ... the only warning i would give you is slate floors looks great but slate is soft and it's not maintenance free you have to seal treat them constantly. Go for a great looking slate effect "Porcelin" floor tile, the modern mimics are amazing.
Do a search on youtube ther is lots of vids on cutting slate.
Thank you, Tony. I will get rid of the complicated masons I have found and do it by myself. When my work is finished I will let you know the good results. I promise to do my work with dedication.
People try to convince you (flooring stores mostly) that you need to bid the job by raw square footage alone. YEAH, RIGHT!!! This Illustrates why. You simply can't rush this process, not if you're a real craftsman. I like your method, everyone had their own. I mat have overhung it and marked the backside, grind, recheck, cut key cuts, and deburr. I may try your method next time... you're never too old or experienced in this trade to learn new tricks! Nice Vid, thanks, keep it up!
We're getting ready to tile around some huge posts on our porch and this video was such a great find! We tried this method on a test tile and it came out great, so we're ready to tackle the project. It's a much better method than cutting 'fingers' in the waste portion and breaking them out and then grinding smooth. Also like the paper template method you employ and your attention to detail in making the video. Thank-you!
And you're right speed is relative. but time is money. money ain't funny, need to put bread in my tummy. If you're doing it as a diyer then who cares, just do it right the first time. I was slow when i first started Tiling. Not as fast as some but that's cuz I'm anal about details. Like instead of a notch out I would've made a knock out, no cut lines showing, remember slow is smooth, smooth is fast
This is BY FAR the GREATEST instruction / and help that i have ever seen to date and i am 55 years old. i would even be willing to pay for this type of help
@tonyiannetta well done mate. I would have to say the angle grinder is king if you have the skill...and you definitely have it. It is indespensible to me as a blade smith. I'm having a look at your vid to see how well an angle grinder handles cutting stone. I am going to be making handles from different types of stone and tile depending on customer request. It looks to be smoothe sailing. ive got the diamond blade and all I need right now is to jimmy rig a good custom washer so it stays tight.
Thanks. The grinder is very good for cutting & shaping stone. If you are a blade smith then there's not much i can tell you don't already know or are aware of. Grinder is good for rough cutting and shaping. I'm also into lapidary, stone cutting & polishing is definitely an art. What i found is the finishing and polishing that takes up most of your time. Depending on type & size of your item and how you want the finish to be, the grinder may not be best tool to finish with.
yeah good job at that speed you will finish that floor in two more weeks just use a real wetsaw like a felker and use some aqua bar paper to make your templets people
Thanks... Speed is not everything, if your a tiler for income or main job then speed is relative.
Felker or Husqvarna don't produce curve cutting tile cutters, they specialise in straight cut wet bed cutters, aimed at the industrial market, normal too expensive for DIY'rs.
Please educate me / us, Whats "Aqua Bar Paper"? and why is it better?
@tonyiannetta Hi. Aqua bar paper is that water proof paper installed on shower walls prior to "mudding" the walls with "mud and lathe". Is thin layer of tar, sandwiched between 2 sheets of heavy duty cardboard paper. I've used it for making templates also, and will not tear or get soggy when checking on a wet saw. ( I make curves like that on a wet saw- just the way I was taught ) I do it either way, just depends on type of cut needed and your level of experience and comfort. look ok. Good job.

i want a wet saw in my kitchen!
SuperBlundy 1 year ago
Thank you very much! It helped alot. I've tried to use a rod saw. It was easy with a regular tile, but with thick glazed one took forever.
I just rented a grinder from HD and it worked like a charm. Just too much noise and dust.
Thanks again.

its's just like cutting a pattern for a dress!!!
kunjidee 1 year ago
Yes i guess it is ... how good are you at dress making?
anybody can cut the pattern but you still have to stitch it together.
There is lot to think about that i have not mentioned like taking into account blade thickness and the cut gaps for the finishing edge trims.

"Perfect" about sums it up. The wall along my countertop falls away 2" and now I know how I can follow that tight to the undulating wall.

Nice vid m8 ,
Have you tried cutting a curve with a large radius like that on a flat bed cutter?
Should be do-able , I'll try and put a vid up in response.
