If you have a good enough vault, and are wealthy enough, you could have a food supply of non-degradable food for up to 35 years. Which is how long it would take for radiation to subside to liveable levels.

Most vaults you can buy nowadays left over from the cold war come with a food supply. Nobody is going to want to take 35 years worth of food with them with them when they up and go. And the vaults only cost 300 K USD (That's with a vault, a house, and some acreage)

Today this game would be called 'Nuclear Annihilation', or "Death in the Desert" or some other action title. Only the geniuses at Interplay could have come up with the simple, yet brilliant, "Fallout" !!!! It's such a shame these innovative designers and developers have sold out to the multiformat market and the almighty dollar and brought us to the point we are now with PC and console gaming...!
