He considers Drew too young? Well then my chances are shot to hell long time ago. Not that I ever really had one....but one can have that innocent teeny-bopper crush on Hugh that I'm sure many of us have..that sexy bastard
I guess this is British humor, I think it's funny. I think it probly takes some getting used to as an interviewer. Looks like you have to be willing to have a battle of sarcastic wit lol.
Mr. Hugh Grant said that he didn't think somebody could be insensitive enough to ask him if he could sing. People laughed at that even! What kind of humour is this-- insulting the interviewer like this? Since he pretends to sing in that movie, why can't he then sing in front of the audience? Actors and actresses pretend to sing other people's songs in Indian and Bangladeshi movies. Now the British have started too. They should pass the public tests first if they claim they can sing for real.
@ritubahar people laughed because he was joking and they could sense that it was a joke, each culture has it own nuances when it comes to humour, so what may be seen as insulting to you can be detected as a joke to others.. however IF he was being serious throughout this interview then it wouldn't be funny, but luckily for us.. he ISN'T so we can laugh .. and on the other point he's an actor not a singer, so there's a difference there too because he's never claimed to be a singer.
@Fluorescent87 Yes you may be right. I like Mr. Hugh Grant as an actor too. But in this interview he did say that he can sing. He said he learnt to play the piano and to sing for the movie 'Music and Lyrics'.
And about that movie he said he managed to bring Ms. Drew Barrymore down. But I still think she looked innocently mature, charming in the movie. Regards.
@ritubahar well again i'm afraid this is just his sense of humour.. him saying he brought drew down is just joking and not at all serious.. and i should stress i like hugh but im not a die hard fan so i have no reason to protect him but it's just to me it's so common for me to see this kind of humour that i see nothing wrong with it.. and actually its a really english way of handling a compliment, we are pretty complex and weird set of people don't you know lol
I don't know why Americans can't "get" the British humour. I'm Brazilian and I laughed for a week when I saw Colin Firth on "Late Late Show with Craig Fergusson".
@ImaginedWriter Sure, it's the good life, and ultimately, his own life so it's not like I can really disparage his choices or actions-- but what I'm saying is, he invested in a good education and nothing substantial--that is, really giving to society--- came out of it. But whatever, he's an entertaining, nice guy and I'm just less privileged and rambling.
@Excuseify How do you define substantial? Is the plumber substantial? I mean he doesn't greatly add to economic output in the same way Hugh and his films does and nor does he revolutionise civilization he merely helps it tick along until he retires and someone replaces him doing the same job.
If substantial means revolutionary like Newton whom has sculpted civilization anew then most who have ever existed never did anything substantial. Thus Hugh & the plumber are equal. Let him be, to be.
@ImaginedWriter Now let's not get dramatic. I'm only expressing that the net equation of Grant's education + his career has an unproductive yield. @xXAvoidingTheLines well we absolutely are! .. despite the fact that Hugh Grant looks way better, it is nice that our teacher make us think about Hugh every time we see them, lol. haha
god it gets on my nerves when my people generalize which naionalities are funny or not. i hardly think a manic depressive englishman is going to go around making jokes. no one heard any jokes from eric clapton when his son fell of a 100th story window
I've been to Argentina as well and you wouldn't know if if people there are funny because you can't hear anyone speak over the noise of car horns and drivers shouting obscenities at each other.
The reason some people don't "get" the English is because of their capacity for being funny while keeping a straight face. When I first went to live there it took me ages to get up to speed with their humor. If you can't take a joke in the UK you won't last 5 minutes. They are actually a very funny nation.
@76juno In other words "dry humour". ....my favorite kind. How can people not get it? It's hilarious! I would love to live a year or so in the UK... It'd make my days a lot brighter that's fr sure.
@jfkjrlover Not really, no one here (England) really insults anyone maliciously, it's called taking the piss and not taking yourself too seriously. If you do that in England you'd get torn apart. Of course it can be taken too far and when it does it's not nice, but that, in my experience at least, very rarely happens

@TheFever77 Well if it is down to him playing up to his britishness he is giving a bad impression of the British because I don't think many Brits act in this way.
Sorry gals, HG is a product of an upper class military Brit family and public school system. The Brit paparazzi know about his nocturnal habits which is why he gets into fights with anyone with a camera. Come on girls, never married...on the Ellen show...has the penny dropped yet. If you search hard enough on the net you will find the definitive video of his exploits.
I ever wanted him on her show but now I really have to say it's not really how I thought it would be. They are both hilarious and I love both very much but their sense of humor is just soo different!! it's still funny ever now and then but not ...
"Hugh Grant says some horrible things to our cameraman". See this video, he punched the cameramen and told to him that he is a .... I can´t say it, do you know why i can´t say it? because i am not RUDE! DID YOU UNDERSTAND HUGH GRANT ?
@ricardinhotuga Hahaha, I thought it was quite amusing. It would get so frustrating having people following you everywhere and blocking your path taking pictures right up in your face. Go Hugh for having the guts to tell them what he thought when he knew it'd get on the internet.
he played supporting parts as Emma Thompson's suitor in Ang Lee’s Academy Award-winning adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and as a cartographer in 1917 Wales in The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In the same year he performed in the Academy Award-winning Restoration.
@punkrockergirl11 - awww keep going guys this argument is hilarious.... I love the way the insults gradually get worse - classic. You guys could be a double act... oh and before you start on me I'm English and I understand irony thanks very much. Ding ding round 2.
@punkrockergirl11 Yes, I've seen his other videos - and he's still being harsher to Ellen than other interviewers. There was nothing remotely "STUPID" about my original comment, only your failure to understand it, and your "STUPID" response. And if you don't want to be disrespectful don't say "Duh!" and "You don't understand the irony!" to people who understand a lot more than you.
@punkrockergirl11 No. I am British and I am fully versed in irony and sarcasm. I am perfectly aware that Grant's style of communication is consistently ironic. However, even people who are ironic do occasionally express genuine dislike. Clearly you are far too stupid to appreciate that subtlety. Grant is being harsher than usual here
Amazing how this bland one dimensional "actor" has got so far considering his limited acting ability. We ain't talking about a De Niro or Olivier here.
@Stainluss Well, fuck me! Who is he nice to, then? I saw a video with his parents visiting him on a film set and he was even rude and mean to his own mother! Fuck this asshole. He's handsome & a good actor, I'll give him that, but he's a lousy, lousy human being and I hope he reaches the end of his life lonely and miserable. What a world class cunt!
@jfkjrlover i have seen the video of him with his parents on the notting hill set (YT seach it those who haven't seen it) and it was very clear to me that he was being playful and joking.. or as the other person told you "taking the piss" .. I'm English though, so i guess we can put this down to you just not getting it..... i also want to say that you're hardly a ray of sunshine yourself...nasty? yes... pathetic? yes ....internet troll = DING DING DING!!!
@jfkjrlover You're a nut job aren't you? I actually don't think he's "cute".. i think he's funny, so i, and other people see something in him that you don't.. now build a bridge and get over it. You don't know this person yet you seem to hate him passionately, that seems alittle crazy to me, this is entertainment .. there are far more important things in life to be angry about and some random actor isn't one. Plus take it from a British person, he WAS joking and his mother would have got it.
@Fluorescent87 By the way, maybe just maybe his mother's feelings were hurt but she didn't want to show it so as to not create any drama in front of the camera. That ever cross your mind? He's a shithead anyway. I don't appreciate his "honesty" because it's not very nice. He even said in some interview that his breakup from Liz was liberating and "a little sad" - a little, eh? He compared the breakup to what his mother's death was like for his father, saying his dad could now do (continued)
@jfkjrlover Oh and also this isn't a democracy so keep writing dumb and incendiary remarks and i will just delete them all because i personally can't stand internet trolls who like to spread negativatity anonomously, also as you stated earlier us Brits are cruel vindictive people so i'll probably even enjoy censoring you ;)
Also heres a life lesson, before posting online ask yourself this "does the world really need to hear my idiotic opinions on things?"... FYI The answers NO!
@Fluorescent87 It's not just my opinion, but that of many others as well. He's an asshole & I think it's ridiculous that you personally take offense to me stating that.
@jfkjrlover personal offense? No. Annoyance at someone behaving like an irritant for no good reason? Yes.
I'm sure there are people who dislike him and thats fine but a very small, pathetic % of people would then go to such lengths as search YT for his videos to start sh*t.. now THAT is ridiculous so be careful what you type because you are coming across as a tad hypocritical... anyways grow up, promptly get a life and pack all this internet troll business in! k, thnx bye...
@strangemenssana I'm an American and I think he's a self-absorbed, miserable old sod! He's always been this way. After years of showing the world what a narcissistic, commitment-phobic and all-around mean person he is, even his good looks couldn't keep people from being turned off from him. He deserves his declining acting career.
Of course if you wanna see a real actor then to hell with this cunt.Check out "Raging Bull The Final Monologue".That's acting an art of which Grant has no conception.
1:15 that was rude! Hugh Laurie is English too but he's never said something like that on the interview. This is not English humor but simply out of line!
I ever wanted him on her show but now I really have to say it's not reallyhow I thought it would be. They are both hilarious and I love both very much but their sense of humor is soo different... it's still funny but yeah..
i adore Hugh Grant! i've just realised that english actors are so funny....and all of them calles themselfs idiots...hugh, rob pattinson, michael sheen:)
@belka260489 totally 100000% agree with you...seems like some people dont understand these english boys too much...i think haters should read english sarcasm for dummies...
@belka260489 We are all idiots, and living in a Mad Mad World! ;) Laughter is the only way to deal with everything!!! I love the English for their voice and their sense of humor, its different and I beat to a different drum and sometimes people do not get them!
Hahaha I love what a killjoy he is... just flat our refuses to sing or dance or be the least bit spontaneous or "fun"... yet he's still charming and amusing... hilarious actually.
LMFAO aw he's brillant :)

@punkrockergirl11 What a classy individual you are. You're embarrassing yourself so I suggest you stop posting
lizclegg 1 year ago
@punkrockergirl11 Yes, I've seen his other videos - and he's still being harsher to Ellen than other interviewers. There was nothing remotely "STUPID" about my original comment, only your failure to understand it, and your "STUPID" response. And if you don't want to be disrespectful don't say "Duh!" and "You don't understand the irony!" to people who understand a lot more than you.
lizclegg 1 year ago
@punkrockergirl11 No. I am British and I am fully versed in irony and sarcasm. I am perfectly aware that Grant's style of communication is consistently ironic. However, even people who are ironic do occasionally express genuine dislike. Clearly you are far too stupid to appreciate that subtlety. Grant is being harsher than usual here

Amazing how this bland one dimensional "actor" has got so far considering his limited acting ability. We ain't talking about a De Niro or Olivier here.

NO , don't do less films Hugh. I actually love you.
NicHklas9Nevermind 1 year ago
He's genuine and not fakely nice. It seems like this is something people are finding hard to accept...
That said, he shouldnt be taken too seriously, thats just his dark sense of humor. I think he's cool.
Stainluss 1 year ago 6
@Stainluss Well, fuck me! Who is he nice to, then? I saw a video with his parents visiting him on a film set and he was even rude and mean to his own mother! Fuck this asshole. He's handsome & a good actor, I'll give him that, but he's a lousy, lousy human being and I hope he reaches the end of his life lonely and miserable. What a world class cunt!
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
@jfkjrlover i have seen the video of him with his parents on the notting hill set (YT seach it those who haven't seen it) and it was very clear to me that he was being playful and joking.. or as the other person told you "taking the piss" .. I'm English though, so i guess we can put this down to you just not getting it..... i also want to say that you're hardly a ray of sunshine yourself...nasty? yes... pathetic? yes ....internet troll = DING DING DING!!!
Fluorescent87 7 months ago
@Fluorescent87 Internet troll? No, just speaking the truth that you don't want to acknowledge because you think the man is cute. Ha!
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
@jfkjrlover You're a nut job aren't you? I actually don't think he's "cute".. i think he's funny, so i, and other people see something in him that you don't.. now build a bridge and get over it. You don't know this person yet you seem to hate him passionately, that seems alittle crazy to me, this is entertainment .. there are far more important things in life to be angry about and some random actor isn't one. Plus take it from a British person, he WAS joking and his mother would have got it.
Fluorescent87 7 months ago
@Fluorescent87 By the way, maybe just maybe his mother's feelings were hurt but she didn't want to show it so as to not create any drama in front of the camera. That ever cross your mind? He's a shithead anyway. I don't appreciate his "honesty" because it's not very nice. He even said in some interview that his breakup from Liz was liberating and "a little sad" - a little, eh? He compared the breakup to what his mother's death was like for his father, saying his dad could now do (continued)
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
@Fluorescent87 (continued) things he couldn't do before she had died. Does Hugh have any sentimentality in him?!
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
@jfkjrlover Oh and also this isn't a democracy so keep writing dumb and incendiary remarks and i will just delete them all because i personally can't stand internet trolls who like to spread negativatity anonomously, also as you stated earlier us Brits are cruel vindictive people so i'll probably even enjoy censoring you ;)
Also heres a life lesson, before posting online ask yourself this "does the world really need to hear my idiotic opinions on things?"... FYI The answers NO!
Fluorescent87 7 months ago
@Fluorescent87 It's not just my opinion, but that of many others as well. He's an asshole & I think it's ridiculous that you personally take offense to me stating that.
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
@jfkjrlover personal offense? No. Annoyance at someone behaving like an irritant for no good reason? Yes.
I'm sure there are people who dislike him and thats fine but a very small, pathetic % of people would then go to such lengths as search YT for his videos to start sh*t.. now THAT is ridiculous so be careful what you type because you are coming across as a tad hypocritical... anyways grow up, promptly get a life and pack all this internet troll business in! k, thnx bye...

I am laughing at this interview and I am British.
I think that he is not nearly as nice as his on screen personae make him appear.
timtak1 1 year ago 5
@strangemenssana I'm an American and I think he's a self-absorbed, miserable old sod! He's always been this way. After years of showing the world what a narcissistic, commitment-phobic and all-around mean person he is, even his good looks couldn't keep people from being turned off from him. He deserves his declining acting career.
jfkjrlover 7 months ago
The word "conception" is perfectly ok here.Grant is a very good looking chap and an equally abysmal "actor".

Of course if you wanna see a real actor then to hell with this cunt.Check out "Raging Bull The Final Monologue".That's acting an art of which Grant has no conception.
