Chinese is much harder than Japanese for evident reasons.

Chinese has accents. Japanese doesn't.

Modern Japanese literature is Hiragana, which is syllabary.

Chinese literature is based on characters, which have no direct relation to the sounds they make.

I speak Korean fluently and I'd say Japanese and Korean are on par by difficulty levels.
