@giles422 Actually I believe the call was roughing the passer not a facemask. It was, I admit, a somewhat strange call given what they could get away with in the '60s. The newspaper accounts of the game called it a roughing the passer/ personal foul. Willie Davis was called on a dubious roughing call on Matte in the second quarter that kept the Colts drive alive for their field goal so I would say it was honors even.
i don't think in fact chandler's kick did miss. i appears to me it crossed the bar THEN blew out of the uprights. IF it crossed it doesn't, by rules matter where it finishes.
@giles422 What Anderson TD? He was ruled OB at the one and the Colts stopped the Packers on downs so that's a moot point. Hornung scored the Packer TD in the 3rd Quarter (not shown in this film because its a Colt highlight film). The Packers outgained the Colts by 2 to 1 with their backup QB so its hard to say the Colts were robbed. They lost to the Packers twice during the season so the Colts had their chances to seal it without getting to a playoff but couldn't cash in.
@rjcpacker my mistake on the Anderson TD- you're right. I still think the Colts were robbed however. That was no face mask, and Chandler's kick to tie missed.
@giles422 How can you make a judgement on a grainy 46 year old film on a facemask call when the ref is standing 6 feet away from the QB? Either way I agree the field goal call was dubious. Don't forget, the Colts missed a 47 yard field goal in OT so no whining! The Colts had many chances to win and did not.
@1957thack This Packers fan agrees. But don't think a correct call would have guaranteed a Baltimore win. The greatest turnover-creating defense in the NFL that year (Davis, Nitschke, Adderley and company) forced last-minute fumbles twice, and the offense each time converted them into game-winning touchdowns.
The Ref who called that questionable Field Goal good ! would later retire after another questionable call 10 years later in the Minnesota vs Dallas NFC Championship game after getting hit in the head with a beer bottle!!!
46 years later and you Baltimore Colts fans are STILL whining about losing that playoff game. The Packers cashed those game checks years ago. If "if"s and "but"s were candy and nuts, every day would be Christmas. The Packers had already beat the Colts twice in the regular season. And as for the game-tying FG, the ref was right there.
The Field Goal wasn't even close to being good and Don Anderson's catch he had only one foot in bounds....They cheated and robbed the Colt's of this victory apparently on purpose...Pathetic.
@FRSFreeStateES They were the only team that had a chance to stop Green bay in the mid-60s. That Field Goal at Green Bay wasn't anywhere close to good. I never am going to blame officials for the outcome of playoff games, but I still wonder why the official wouldn't atleast stand right underneath the side of the goal post. There were two officials back there.
Memorial Stadium....right in the middle of a neighborhood!!! Wow! And an airplane crashed in the upper deck after a playoff game once after the crowd emptied out of the stadium.......I never forgot that! Thanks for another great clip! Tom Matte as QB.....I think he had the plays taped to his arm inside his sleeve. Amazing............That Don Chandler field goal was a bad break and I vividly recall a big stink over that call.........The Colts got "jobbed" on that bad call.
@scotrish hehe...you caught me! I was going by a phonetic spelling...being too lazy too fact check...sorry about that Gary! I have made the correction. Thanks!

Colts were robbed. Anderson's TD was out of bounds, Smith did not face mask Zeke, and Chandler's kick missed. It must be said.

Why did the Colts wear white at home in '65???
GoBungles 4 months ago
@GoBungles it's always the home teams choice, although normally teams wear their colors at home, some don't.

@GoBungles this game was in Wisconsin, however.
