Its been translated many, many ways. On the 2010 Criterion, which is what I saw, the line "Makes me want to Puke." It isn't YOU make me want to puke, which I always found interesting.

"deguelasse" literally means disgusting, michel literally says "it is disgusting" i have seen two other translations, one with scumbag and the other using the American saying "you make me want to puke". There has been a lot of discussion over what michel's last word's should be translated to in english, especially as the policemen could've purposefully misheard him. Does he mean Jean Seberg is disgusting or does he mean the world generally?

But, if we think about the Belmondo's character feelings about the world and life, the second hypothesis makes sense. I prefer the last one. You?

the version i watched had Disgusting....

Out of all the translations "Disgusting" is my favourite

I believe the word itself is "dégueulasse".

The word is commonly used as slang for "disgusting"

Any respectable student such as Patricia living in Paris would have intimate knowledge of expressions such as this.

@Brianpockets I think he might refer to the convertastion they had a couple of times before....

he would say:

- I want to sleep with you couse your so pretty

- No, Im disgusting..

-Ok. So I want to sleep with you cause your so disgusting.

It was said 2 or 3 times in the whole movie. I think he might be mocking her right now.

there are real translation problems with this final scene.

Some versions say that Belmondo says:

"You're a real bitch."

Thence Seberg's final line would be: "What's a bitch?"

Another version translates the line as: "You're a scumbag."

To Seberg's: "What's a scumbag?"

That's a different translation than I saw. In the other version, Michel said, "I'm a real creep." Something as small as that makes a huge difference in how one inteprets the ending.

I think it's supposed to be unclear who or what michel is talking about, but the cop tells Patricia that the insult is directed at her.

the version i first saw read:

"it's a real Scumbag"

"What did he say?"

"He said "you're a real scumbag""

"What's a scumbag"

I came to think it meant that michel was cursing fate in the abstract. but of course no one can be sure. Shame how this version left out the ambiguity.

@chipthequinn the first version i saw said that too, and i remember it having such an impact on me, it was a great ending. now, when re-watching it on, apparently, a different version, it said the 'you're a real louse'. kind of disappointing

Yes this is the version I appreciated most too.

a recent one I saw - had the phrase - LOUSE instead.

and he directed it right at her. Which got rid of the final frustrating ambiguity.
