I was an employee for many years as Electrical Technician at a large electrical utility. This video seems strikingly odd as every electrical substation had various protection relays(overcurrent, overvoltage, differential etc) that would sense the electrical fault and trip a high voltage breaker, thus ending the fault. It would trip in seconds, not minutes.
I Really Like The Video From Your Apparantly a squirrel caused this to happen according to the goverment folks, they took a real interest in this video when they found out it was filmed.

At 4:12 it looks like the arc ate away at the steel support structure.
Just think of how fast your electric meter would spin with that much power. Assuming only 100 amps at 69 kV, that's 1.9 kWh per second, or $11.50 per minute. For all I know that could be 1000 amps or 230 kV...
Oh Mann!!!
I seen one of those big transformers blow before we were 3 miles away and it lit up the sky for miles and blew out the sides of it and top shooting super heated coolent everywhere the fire Sept said, anyone around it would have been killed instantly!
It's almost mesmerizing to watch arcs, watching the points they come from and go into, their changing colors, etc. It's kind of cool when you think it's electrons (part of atoms no less), moving at close to the speed of light.
@Comments2010 este altceva asemanator mai sigur si stabil, in plus se poate folosi la protectie de radiatii, la protectie de atacuri energetice si la alte lucruri. Detalii pe policam(punct)ro
It "just about blinds ya" because it's kicking off massive amounts of visible, and UV light. It's basically just a massive welding arc, don't look at it or your eyes will get burned.
Second-degree burns on the surface of your eyes are no fun.
The insulator was leaking after, by the look of it.
It's unfortunate the maintenance crew took so long!
The repair cost would have been frikken high after the transformer overloaded to point of fire!
I work in a warehouse that backs out onto a City substation. I have heard & saw fireworks& bangs the same as that situation. The repair crews here are fast to respond when something "blows" & power drops..
@chopperli looks like a breakers stuck closed. enough amps went through the squirrel to ionize the surrounding air... and current conducts through air after the squirrels burnt off. Green flames is what occurs when copper gets hot enough and turns into a metal fire.
@R5H4D0W yes, you a right. but my point was it should not happen for a long time. At least, it had 2 back-up protection for occurs over-current and earth fault to cut off ? and one thing, how long is the metal continually on fire after cut off ? and Are you heard the sound while metal fire?
@chopperli Usually after cutoff nothing happens, you may smell some ozone but that would be it. There appears to be another wire laying on top of the one that's burning at 2:57. I'm an electrician in the handyman sense, so I can only speculate that the insulation somewhere burnt through and is grounding itself, bypassing the switcher.
@R5H4D0W oh yeah. Maybe the workers sleeping in the control room? it should be monitored (ps i dont know is it had monitor system or not ) if short circuit or earth fault happen.
Learn how to steady a Camera. And while your at it, get the title right. It only sizzled and crackled in your video. There was NO explosion. Waste of my time. And FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY LAY OFF THE ZOOM!
@JetMechMA Probably yes, this may be ionizing radiation (since there is a lot of plasma going on I assume it is this, however I am not very knowledgeable) which emits ultraviolet (and even higher like x-ray)
After hearing that fella say (repeatedly) about how watching this could blind you, I hit pause and headed out to the garage to get my welding helmet....so I can watch the remainder of the video without harming my eyes.
I Wonder WHEN will Fred Flintstone turn off the electricity?Or are they trying to permanently fix people 's home appliances with high voltage and then show them the video..?
@robot797 As weird as it may sound it is actually fairly common. Faults like this are often just seen as load and not a full blown fault which would cause the feeders at the other end to trip.
@cbfd307 Don't everyone know that holding a camera really still, especially when you're excited dealing with what you're trying to film, is a tough thing to get right?? I'd like to see everyone that's bitching about it do any better....
@god604 For all of you giving grief to the cameraman, to zoom into something that far away WITHOUT a monopod or a tripod is impossible to do without any movement. Period..

Damn, [cameraman], learn how to hold a fuggin' camera!
Also, that's not an explosion, that's plasma (ionized particles of matter). The plasma, and resulting overheating of equipment, led to flames (aka: fire). An explosion is, by definition, "A violent expansion in which energy is transmitted outward as a shock wave." Therefore, I'll say it again: this is not an explosion.
