I know there are many accidentals in this piece, but this guy actually does make quite a lot of mistakes, both in notes and tempo. The sheet music for tempo is actually nothing like how he's playing it, and the sheet I've got were written by Schyman himself. To be honest, I've seen better from youtube pianists.
Fuck the tempo, this guy knows how to express dynamics so beautifully. You can hear Cohen's maniacal laughing and Fitzpatrick desperately begging for his life behind the piano keys.
I like it better this way, but id like to note that this is only 18 seconds shorter than the "slow" version most people play. Some parts are much faster, and some parts are much slower.
It is supposed to be this way, but id like to note that thiSs is only 18 seconds shorter than the "slow" version most people play. Some parts are much faster, and some parts are much slower.
Its to fast if he slowed it down a bit it would be ok and 4 any of u who says that cohens saying presto and wants him to go fast ur wrong cause if u notice he also allegro wich is fast and yes he dose say presto as well but i got the sheet music off gary skymans website and the song is surpposed to be played a little bit slower than that but apart from that this person is a great pianist
I realize that Martin is attempting to play with as much fire and gusto as possible, but I thought a few parts got a little muddy and sloppy. Martin Lueng is still and awesome pianist though.
I've noticed that there are a load of comments on this video saying "slow down!", so I thought I'd share my observations with you all.
In the scene in which this piece is presented we find Flitzpatrick playing the piano at a reasonably slower tempo than that of Leung, it's been accepted that the Bioshock version is the correct one, but notice that Cohen can be heard yelling "Presto!" and subsequently blew Flitzpatrick up for playing the song incorrectly.
@XxRobbieDxX But then if you follow the original sheet music written by Gary Schyman, you find that the original tempo is something like 76, completely not Presto at all. It raises the question as to whether the lines from the script actually fit the music, as they may have been developed in different time frames.
All in all, it's up to the pianist to interpret the piece, as an actor would a monologue.
in my opinion this is much better than the original because he plays it like a mad pianist during tempest. much better, this is more insane than the original.
It's not close to the 'real one' this is the real one. I have the sheet music and I can play this and I will tell you as a musician (and Bioshock lover) that this is actually amazingly played. So yea, he plays very fast at the beginning, but watch closely. It is all on purpose, towards the end you can see he slows down and speeds up accordingly, like an insane demon trying to claw its way out of the body of a beautiful artist.
@xxsm13xx you can actually get a vinyl album with this song on it when you buy the limited edition of bioshock 2. it also comes with a cd an artbook a couple posters and oh a game. this song sounds amazing on vinyl.
@xxsm13xx I'm sure you've already heard this, but it's Cohen's Masterpiece. It's from the hit game Bioshock ( I would highly suggest that you play the game. It's unlike any game I've ever played before.... it's amazing....).
@ColdRiceBall , true say. it changed my life, and im not crazy...its so beautiful but at the same time it has a sense of fear and mystery. awesome game, awesome story, awesome music.
@xXGoldenFishXx360 R.I.P. Cohen... but I didn't attack him! I accidently did one thing a little too fast, and he tried to kill me! I attacked out of self defense.
Fast is good sometimes, but too fast is obnoxious. Hes not conveying emotion, he's franticly pounding, and you're milking the softer parts wayyyy too much.
Is it true you got the music two hours before playing it for the first time?
lol most people don't actually realise that the pianist got the sheet music something like, 2 hours before the actual concert. That's a pretty fkn good effort for 2 hours worth of prac
@vivalachunk it's supposed to be played this fast from a musical point of view, although it is played slower in the game, cohen wanted it prestissimo which is as fast as possible essentially, that's why he is yelling at the guy in the game playing it xD
This version is amazing, that itachi91 guy's version is complete shit compared to this, I know the other guy is playing it "right" but, it just doesn't come close to this, it just makes me want to punch him in the face
@insanodeleite1 it's because there all androids sent out by satin to kill us all when the anti-Christ hits the frenzy button destroying civilization as we know it and their ultimate goal to destroy all feeling, (like Sayid from LOST). It's all basic R.E curriculum. lol
No. Listen to the original. Listen to the pauses Cohen makes. Does this guy keep the pauses and the breaks? No. He goes fur pure, sheer speed. Doesn't keep the spirit of the original.
And as we know, speed =/= quality. If he had listened (and read) the proper version, he would have been able to play this properly. He didn't, and he just plays this full speed.
@waltercarnby And you do? Show the world then, it's a hard piece to play, based on insanity. Insanity is never played like a computer, where every note is perfectly in tune. Insanity at the bottom of the sea : Do you think they're going to have perfect players in a mad world? Mistakes are needed, if you played the song perfectly it'd be boring, there'd be no insanity to it at all, just quavers and semi quavers. But this man plays with the best thoughts of it
@Crezth So now you're actually making fun of insane people? Look, musicmanship means playing the song correctly, sure you need that, but without shee music do you have any idea how hard this song is? It's hard for anyone to be able to sight read, now try learning it and playing without in front of a giant cloud, on stage perhaps a different piano. His playing is how I imagine it should be played : can't you hear it? Come back when you know what insanity feels like, human!
@Crezth What you said just doesn't go together : Sure, if he failed to play it I wouldn't like it, yet this has both musicmaship and insanity. Musicmanship (if you've ever actually played piano) is when you make a mistake you carry on! He has no sheet music in front of him, in front of many people hard song. You're acting like you want him to play it note perfect(What a COMPUTER does) with no emotion to it. Insanity ISN'T doing things perfectlyCome back when you've experienced it and don't hate

honestly, i didnt enjoy his banging on the piano@@ it doesnt really potray any mood from the insanity of bioshock@@ its just random banging. i prefer to watch an ametuer play this piece with less talent than him but with the proper mood cause he understand the piece. this is just showing technical difficulties
@Telonelemon3 Cohen might have been socially disturbed(to say the least) we was an artistic genius! i think he would have liked this to be performed properly. on top of that, his art wasnt quite abstract.
I just realised there are two piano pieces on the main menu. One is you moving up and down the menu screen and there is a fainter one in the background. I guess you mean the quiet on ein the background!
I can understand why you would think that, but the further you are through music the more you understand that it isnt about the notes and the timing, its about the feeling behind the notes which bring their own timing. This pianist is depicting someone who was once a master of the arts, and has driven him to insanity over the fact that there is no one to appreciate his work anymore, so the piece becomes more messed up and crazy because, thats the feelings behind them. sorry if i seem patronizing
@Matikata, while I would agree with you on some aspects of this, you aren't completely right. He butchered the "frantic" feeling in this song I'm sorry. Example: I would not defend someone playing Moonlight sonata first movement way faster than the original while still keeping some parts relatively the same tempo. His tempo is off in way too many parts thus ruining the song.
Lets see how you would play the piano when you've been trapped underwater for years on end with fucked up creatures stalking you and no one to appreciate your work. You're too hung up on the original recording of this song to step out of your comfort zone and listen to a character playing this song.
I'll retract my previous and leave you with this. There are people who give a rendition of their style towards a piece they are playing. It does not excuse tonality mistakes and unstable tempos. Justify that. If you do happen to think of any excuse toward it you are a horrible musician.
I said step out of your comfort zone to LISTEN to a character (Cohen) playing this piece after whatever happened to him. I never critisized your playing or anything, in fact i would really like to hear something if you don't mind sharing =] But I truly believe that if you went mental, utterly crazy lonesome fucked up word crazy, you'd probably play a bit like he does.
hes suppose to make mistakes.....i think you would make a few mistakes if you had bombs strapped to the piano your playing on. this was a fantastic game 13 out of 10!(off the chart)
@vesemashouk yes but remember cohen wanted it to be perfect like his masterpiece. if you ask me the mistakes shouldn't have happened but he should play like a crazy precise meticulous person

@matikata agreed

@vesemashouk yes but remember cohen wanted it to be perfect like his masterpiece. if you ask me the mistakes shouldn't have happened but he should play like a crazy precise meticulous person
