  • This is dedicated to my first love, we got back together and we are still in love after 22 years, and married now for 24. He's my soul mate!

  • i think this song is talking about school or more specifically, college. when anyone especialy girls go away to college, unless you give her weddng ring, chances are she WILL forget about you and start talking to any x-number of guys. its a real tricky situation. thats why i dont date in college, you just cant trust anyone espcially girls.

  • What's funny is that when I first heard this, I thought it was British. So call me an idiot.

  • Memories...some glad...some sad...thanks for sharing.

  • Sweet

  • I checked an think that Billboard shows this 'charting' on July 3rd, 1965.

What a wonderful memory, this song.

    Larry

  • I'll never forget when Carson introduced dad Jerry as Gary Lewis' father and how pissed Jerry got!

  • Gary and the boys hit #2 in Bilboard, 8-21-65. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Shalom, Gary!

  • So Tender, Sweet & True...........

Why Was My Life Better Then...Maybe Wishful Thinking.

  • Such a simple song and beautiful sentiment

  • I was at Summercamp in July 1966 and there were two songs and one girl that I won't forget. I was a proto-computer geek. Dad, a physics teacher and I was interested in nothing less than chemistry tables and math equations, but my folks thought I should get some "socializing," so off to camp I went. Sat all alone in the corner during the Friday dance, but the first girl Glenda asked me to dance to this song. By the time the Beatles came on she had her head on my shoulder.

  • @jeff62rey

Great 'summertime' story!.....Thanks for sharing it here. It gave me my 'smile for the day'

  • As good as it gets

  • Son of the great JERRY LEWIS

  • I'm 14 and I Heard This Song On The Radio... Much Better Than The Music Now Days <3 :D

  • On the Greatest Hits album of this the producers added the extra five seconds before this song starts. On the liner notes Gary L. said frequently in the early days he'd use his Dad's band director in the studio...don't know if he does so here, but you hear the "click, click" of snapping fingers and an older-sounding man counting down the song, with Gary in the background saying "OK, we got it now".

I agree...this may not be Gary's signature song (i.e. "This diamond ring") but it's his best.

  • Nice refreching song.

The stereo effect when listening with headphone is pretty annoying though.

  • I love this song, it's the only one of his I have ever heard though.

  • Just a refreshing oldie that resonates any time, any where... Thank you for posting.. Lin

  • Doing a cover of this with the seasons flipped for my high school sweetheart.

  • Great summer song.

  • I met him when he toured sometime in the late 70's in Detroit. I brought an album to the show, he signed it and was very gracious. He couldn't be any nicer.

  • Best Gary Lewis song ever. I think his brother worked at my company in Woodland Hills CA in 1975...but I never met him.

  • My favourite song by Gary Lewis and the playboys. Beautiful!

  • i love this this song im making a band and we r going to make music youst like this so i hope u guys get my cds when i sell them i love u rosemary

  • This song has a special meaning for me - I think it was the summer I was 15. So young, so sweet. Thank you for this post.

  • Ya know there is an element of innocence sort of woven through this guys stuff that seems to be long missing from the music scene today. Maybe that's cos it dies so darn young these days. I'm not saying there isn't a place for the grittier sides. But the sense ya get of like a flower slowly opening, ya know young guys and gals holding hands for the first time, walking in the rain and getting it, that first halting kiss, the joy of the journey even through its tears. It's all between the lines...

  • Thanks Snookiebutt !!

  • love this song!

  • In 1966 I loved a girl named Martha Elizabeth...she lived in Tenn...me KY.

We wrote daily. I'd listen to this and think of her...

Now, I think of her again...I'm divorced and miss the feelings I had when I listened to this song.

    Love...nothing like it.

    Larry

  • A good, old-fashioned love song!

  • I have misplaced my 45 recording of this fine tune, please, who wrote it? thanks in advance!

  • @Tunz909 It was written by Gary Geld and Peter Udell

  • I wish this song were longer - it's one of my all time favorites and makes me think of my high school sweetheart - I miss him....always!

  • Classic

  • My dad loves this song, Love you Dad!

  • i love this song so much i could sing it to the hole world and to my love ones

when ur far from home youst think of me girl and il be there

  • I was a kid when this song was on the charts. Dedicated to my cousins mom Sonya who loaned me the album back in the 70's. As a kid I liked Green Grass the best now I like this one the best.

  • i cried listening ti this song

  • It's interesting to note that Gary's keyboardist at the time he had that string of hits was Tom Tripplehorn, actress Jean Tripplehorn's dad.

  • Okay. I heard this song on the radio. I realized it from the '60s but the images in my head while hearing it were these singers in their early 20's from the 1950's who were preppy and nerdy, going on some camping or hiking trip. It made me laugh. Not knocking them though.

  • Reminds me of those wonderful lazy days at Sunkist Beach on the lifeguard stand. If I could only go back. What a great song!!!!1

  • What a cute and very innocent song from a time when life was so much simpler.

Thanks so much for posting. Happy New Year!

  • Im not really in to this kind of music. Though most of the listeners are good as my grandfathers! Well, it gives me a nostalgic feel.

  • .....darling save your heart for me!....... what a wonderful sounds to hear from your love one.

  • Funny how, listening to these old songs, I'm instantly transported back to that time. I feel just like the niaive 14 year old, very innocent and full of hope for the future. What happened? The youngsters today never get a chance to enjoy that innocence, so sad.

  • @hawkmoon03111951 that`s tru!

  • we love you, snookiebutt

  • @stalkingwolf1954 awh shucks, thanks.

  • I love this song!!!!!!! So sweet and innocent.

  • What a wonderful song! I wish it was still like this today.

  • uscgcampbell, same here. i never got over that person. after 42 years, i went back home to see him. no doubt it. he is the love of my life...........forever. good luck to you and Marlene.

  • This song is breathtaking!

  • THIS makes my heart go pitter pat...

  • Gary is the son of Jerry Lewis, right?

  • @crowleysridgegirl hes jerrys kid ,jerry lewis directed an episode of ben crazy and threw vince edwards off the set of his own show .

  • @spacepatrolman uhh,do what now??

  • @spacepatrolman and you can go patrol some space since it sounds to me like you've been doing that anyway.

  • nice old song...

  • I saw Gary and his band in Eugene, OR. at an oldies show a few years ago. Also, I read he has a music store in L.A.

  • WOW, I just read about Marlene being the 11th girlfriend and refinding her. Now, that's something! Oh, how so very romantic! Thanks Snookiebutt for this song! UTube is so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was a song my boyfriend sent me when i was 16 visiting with my mom for the summer.Brings back lots of memeories. Loved to see him once again. Been 45 years.

  • If only the music were still THIS soothing. IN GENERAL, I want to thank Gary Lewis, of course, but also ALL THE PLAYBOYS. My research indicates the members over the years were: John West, Dave Walker, Al Ramsay, David Costell, Jim Keltner. Ron Hicklin, Al Capps, Stan Farber, Tommy Triplehorn, Carl Radle, Jimmy Karstein & probably more (a couple are deceased). WHEREVER YOU ALL ARE -- THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT TUNES!

  • I love this song!! Eighth grade!!

  • Does anyone know if this group is touring? Fantastic songs!

  • @mustangmooney21 Yes, Gary is still going strong with a different group of Playboys though-

  • luv this song....very melodious....owwwww...

  • Awesome video Snookiebutt! , for one of their greatest of all time. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Sincerely, therickynelson

  • I sang this song to my children when they were small and used it for the mother/son and father /daughter dance at their weddings...now I sing it to my grandchildren...my absolute favorite song!

  • Come on peeps! Try this one by the guys, "PALISADES PARK". Palisades Park was in Pacific Palisades in southern Calif, and right on the beach. This song has only 3 hits on it total. When my boys were young they loved this song. Come on everybody, aren't you sick of the garbage on the air waves these days? I was fed up a long time ago. Listen to this song and crank it up! Sincerely, Ronald J. Campbell, U.S. Army Ret.

  • Remembering happy days of my life in 1965........"just don't fall for someone new..............".

  • I actually met, and had dinner with, Gary Lewis, back in 1981, St. Catherines, Canada. One of the truly nicest gentlemen I have ever met. We spoke of all his hits, including SAVE YOUR HEART. Summer, 1965. Great great summertime song. He still tours today, 2010. Superb memories with this tune. Thanks for uploading it, snookie!!!

  • love this song, oh the good old days.

  • one of my favorite Gary Lewis songs, thanks for posting it!!!

  • This song ....brings back so many GREAT MEMORIES......I love it...

  • yes...this song bring a lot of memories

  • I think in this song more than any other that Gary Lewis and the Playboys did, Gary's voice sounds a lot like his dad Jerry's.

  • the year i was born. i grew up hearing this song and other hits in those years played by my uncle in his stereo.they are the songs of my childhood..

  • one of the first songs of childhood that made me think seriously about girls. magic.

  • He has such a sweet voice.

  • Not much of a voice - but great lyrics and story with each song

  • wow! so sweet..........

  • Thanks

  • I love how the lyrics are able to separate the physical from the emotional when it comes to love.

Basically saying "You can go ahead and be physically intimate with someone. Heck, go on and even be with a few people. Just don't develop any feelings or fall in love with any of them...because that's what would really hurt."

The songwriter here really understands that most guys want just sex and not necessarily love. It's trusting the girl with a lot, but this guy's willing to take that gamble.

  • Those salad days in high school were made more memorable with Gary and his playboys effortlessly crooning this song.We were not mindful of the passing hours as we hopped from one classroom to another, taking in a breath of fresh air for breaks and savoring this sound which to this day is as palatable and delectable as it was sung 40 years ago. Thanks, Gary for the song.

  • This song turns my gray hair brown again...

  • @BruceLollis Right on Bruce. You never grow old inside bud. My family and I saw these guys in Disney Land December '69. I was 6 and was with my kindergarten sweetheart Wendy. This song always reminds me of her. Never stop listening man. Hey try this one by the guys: "PALISADES PARK." It's the window with the album on it. GO GOR IT. Palisades Park was right on the ocean in Pacific Palisades, Southern CA. Sincerely, Sgt. Ronald J.Campbell U.S. Army, Ret.

  • Very enjoyable song,,always will be. RWB

  • Loved this group!!!

  • I was only 5 yrs old when this song came out but loved it back then. I can still remember hearing this and Everyones Gone to the Moon right around the time I started kindergarten. Hadn't heard either one for over 40 years til I started hearing them on my cable TV oldies station. Still brings back those feelings after all those years. Just a great marriage of chords and melody, along with a great performance by Gary and his band.

  • kissing sherry at 13. nice song

  • 2franzia5: kissing steven at 14. sigh...

  • Hey!! Congrats, all my best to you both!!!

  • @Snookiebutt

Correction. Correction..Please make that to read "This is for my 11th Grade girlfriend Marlene. Not my 11th girlfriend. I wasnt "hot" enough to have 11 girlfriends.haha.

  • @uscgccampbell

    that is SO sweet. <3

  • This was my very favorite of GaryLewis&thePlayboys. Gary had a superb voice and had great control over it as well. I'm so sorry that Vietnam affected him negatively and give him great credit for not using his fathers wealth and fame to get out of serving.

Oh I used to play this over and over. I was in high school at the time. Thanks Gary and God Bless.

  • living near the beach; i get to stay here year round. but the object of my lust won't be here again till sometime near christmas... but the song's still good....

  • These guys were awfully good for a short while in the mid 60s. Their songs really captured the sentiment of the period just before the British invasion ... their songs seemed to just SHOUT summertime.

  • Thank you for post this beautiful song.

  • my dad loves their music!!!

  • I was a sophomore in high school when Gary & Playboys were popular. Their records were standard fare at our "sock-hops" Unfortunately they were overshadowed by the Beatles & other groups and didn't seem to be appreciated as much as they deserved to be. A very underrated group in my opinion, the orchestration alone was great along with fun lyrics & pretty good singing! Gary & Playboys, you guys were AWESOME!

  • Gary Lewis and the Playboys and The Lovin Spoonful are very underated Groups

  • P.S. Love that Cordovox!

  • HA! Thank-Ya boyss- ummm.........

  • Awesome! Vastly underrated group.

  • when the summer moon is on the rise, ang your dancing under starlit skies, please don't let the stars get in you'r eyes just, save your heart for me! what a song like this

  • Oh my ! This song gives me a very good feeling. Thanks for uploading.

  • This is my favorite song of Gary's along with This Diamond Ring, She's Just My Style, and Count Me In

  • One of his best songs......

  • I don't know why, but when I was a kid, I thought this was a British song.

  • wow, a California group that hit the charts in early 65

  • huh? THE BEACH BOYS were consistently on the charts thru '64,65,66...THE BYRDS had two #1 hits in 1965... JAN AND DEAN had 2 records chart in the top 30 in 1965...

  • I don't doubt that at all Allhallowsday..........although Gary Lewis always played "good time music" during that period which I always will cherish as long as I'm able to listen to good music.....

  • I guess I misunderstood you, but not your love for good music! Thx.

  • I was very young since I heard this song... and it reminds of my father. :)

  • I used to live by a lake in Colorado and this song ran thru my mind.

  • Could you post "Where Will the Words Come From"...one of his best, but least known songs...

  • poignant----a little sad....but so cool!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • gosh, i love this song!

  • This was one of my cousin RG's favorite songs after his girlfriend Kathy said she thought they should see others.

Another of his favorites was "This Diamond Necklace" - wasn't that a Gary Lewis Song?

RG gave her a diamond necklace but she gave it to me after she broke up with him. Sadly, he didn't even recognize that it was the necklace he gave her.

  • Actually the song was "This Diamond Ring" Gary's first big hit.

  • JImmy Karstein and Tommy Tripplehorn are back in Tulsa and still rockin!!! Carl Radle has passed on, RIP Carl and God Bless You - John West I believe is relaxing in California - thanks for the memories John...Paul.

  • I fell in love for the first time when this came out......what memories

  • Wonderful Song! Doesn't anyone today know how to sing a song concerning Love from The Heart and Soul and Not the physical act of making love? There is A difference... Wonderful Job, Gary and The Boys!!!

  • I still believe myself in love from the heart and soul, although I can't speak for the rest of the world!

  • Great......simply great...... Inglewood, Calif.

    Dances.....Cokes........the south bay of L.A.

What a wonderful time. What a wonderful song and recording. Thanks Gary.

  • are they dead?

  • Gary Lewis is still around and performing. The others...have no idea where they are.

  • @Snookiebutt he performs on telethons so did chicago they said they watched jerry lewis movies

  • True story:

When Gary started sessions on this song he tried the whistling part and so did Leon Russell and neither could nail it--usually started laughing because it sounded lame.

So...they got out the union book for musicians and sure enough there's a professional whistler. Got him in and he did the deal......

  • I wonder if they got a pro for the Scorpians "Wind of Chage" song! I love hearing little facts like this. thanks for the story :)

  • my dad loves it! lol!

  • This song brings back memories of my late older brother and walking to the store with him before he went into the Marines and shipped off to Vietnam. What a strange feeling this memory gives me. Very sad yet memorable times.

  • The perfect pop song for young love!!!

  • They were a handsome Group!

  • Just Perfect! Reminds me of growing up at my family's summer place in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

  • Originally recorded by Brian Hyland. It was on the B-side of his 1963 single, "I'm Afraid To Go Home."

  • thanks for posting!!! :)

  • Always liked this song..RWB

  • is thAT ONE PIC THE COVER OF THE SINGLE Jill? I have never seen it before....

  • Thanks for posting this SB. I'm not the most 'learn-ned' person out there as far as music (naming titles, dates, groups, etc.) but I'm amazed as I'm going thru these YouTube postings, the amount of songs I recognize but didn't realize came from Gary Lewis & the Playboys! I'm wondering if these folks were not among the highly underated groups of that era? JMHO. LRG
