@MonsunFilmatorium i cannot defend my countries cinema. Grateful for subtitles and avi players. Cmon, though, we have a small thriving art film scene--mostly unwatched. Mary does the holy land or last tango on golgotha--classics.
@Katzone if I came in too late catch the context (severe gas leak in your gaff?) too bad. Jesus talked about a lot more than beatles politic "peace". Father against son, etc. He also called gentiles "dogs" --wasnt gonna heal the shiksa cause " I dont heal dogs". Id stone the racist jerk again. Romans crucify. We stone.
I want european cinema back, I'm tired of american shit, I want also good european music back tou our radios, like in the 50's and 60's. Stop cultural colonization by american trash. We must recover european culture, specially from Italia, France or Germany!
@fcac20 I am so agreed on that. The American Trash that has been invading the world of Entertainment and Film has started to get really annoying! Excellent choice in Countries! :D
In this movie,Pasolini gave the role of Mary to his own mother,Susanna. She could express the pain for the loss of a son:in fact Pier Paolo younger brother,Guido, died during WWII.
Pasolini was an atheist, indeed a Marxist, and this film is routinely interpreted as a proto-Marxist allegory. Yet P was perhaps first of all a poet, and the concepts of the sacred and the divine, far from repelling him as so much religious superstition, held for him a powerful appeal.
In 1962 he came to Assisi in response to Pope John XXIII's call for dialogue with non-Christian artists. While there, he read through a book of the Gospels "from beginning to end, like a novel," later proclaiming the story of Jesus "the most exalting thing one can read." So clearly P was not a typical communist.
PAsolini was an Italian, and a deep genius, then for he the meaning of "marxist" and "religion" are many and complex, and these concept are in a togheter ambivalence, this was his complex poetic and human research
I see that comment riled up your minds. All I wanted to say is that he was not a pious man, he was more inclined to the real that the ideal. So for any religious freaks who think this movie inspired your faith, try watching his other movie: Salo.

Pasolini had a great eye for faces - they're archaic and modern at the same time
