L.B. Mayer was ready to hand Norma "Mrs. Miniver," but she steadfastly refused it because she would not -at 40- play the mother of an army-age son. That choice should be her fans deepest regret since it proved to be MGM's most profitable film of 1942 and won Greer Garson in the lead a Best Actress Oscar. Miniver would have likely recharged Norma's career for at least a half dozen more years. :(
@dvlaries I heard she also turned it down also because she said she didn't have the energy to play such a role. Not sure if it's true but it does take a lot out of an actor to do a dramatic role like the one in Mrs. Miniver
I LOVE, LOVE Norma Shearer. A true Hollywood star. Classic, graceful, royal. I wish she would have continued on with acting into the 40's and gotten away from MGM like some of the others, but I guess she was MGM and part of its foundation. This was a wonderful tribute for Ms Shearer.
Norma was the First Lady of MGM winning the first Academy Award for her portrayal in the Divorcee with Clark Gable and Lionel Barrymore. Also, married to MGM"s "Boy Wonder" Irving Thalberg until his untimely death in 1937. After her last movie "Her Cardboard Lover" she faded into obscurity with inherited mental illness before passing away in 1983.
It's very interesting to me that this lovely actress has not stood the test of time. ( like, say, Crawford ) She's a much better actress than many credit her being, but for some reason largely forgotten. This was a lovely clip. Thx.
I think its because she, for the most part, stopped making movies in the early 40s. I guess the death of Irving Thalberg really affected her and as a result the baby boom generation mostly overlooked her and focused more on actresses like Joan Crawford and Bette Davis.
She has stunningly beautiful eye's!! Intriguing and yet, inviting. She could be eloquent and fierce at the same time. Whew!!! Thanks for the send blu65gibson... nice review on this gorgeous woman!
