I think you got it. I remember reading somewhere that the Raindrops version IS Elle Greenwich singing lead and Barry singing "didle didle didle lit" bass line!
The recording was meant as a "demo". They where so happy with the demo they released it as "The Raindrops". And you are correct with interchanging other groups.
fantastic.....wish we had those "little labels" again where we would get exposed to more and more music that made the music even better. It's all too corporate nowadays.
Is it me or aren't The Jelly Beans just The Dixie Cups with a guy added? And yes, the original version with Elle Greenwich on the solo and Barry doing the base line (aka The Raindrops) grooves a little better
No. THe Dixie Cups, like the Ronettes, consisted of two sisters (Barbara and Rosa Lee Hawkins) and their cousin Joanie Marie Johnson from New Orleans. The Jelly Beans, who were from Jersey City, NJ, consisted of four girls (Alma Brewer, Diane Taylor, and sisters Maxine and Elyse Herbert) and one boy (Charles Thomas).
The "Raindrops" wrote this song (and all Raindrop songs) Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich - When their version hit - they had to scramble to put together a "group" to tour - So Ellie - Jeff and Ellie's sister became "The Raindrops" with "What a Guy", and "That Boy John" etc.
This is a great post ..a brilliant Greenwich-Barry composition .. one of their best. The Jelly Beans were a great group, with a unique sound. The Raindrops also do a fantastic version of this song too .. very similar to this number by the Jelly Beans .. very full production etc .. only just a little FASTER (but not TOO fast) .. the end-result beat is awesome ..
@johnnypoker46 I like the JB's version of "The Kind of Boy" better than the A side of their Red Bird single "Baby Be Mine" and believe it could have been a sizeable hit. Thank you for your comment, my friend!
Great Beautiful Video Clip and I enjoyed of watching it very much. The Jelly Beans were the best and I loved them. I love this song very much and it is one of the best. Hat off to you sfratpack that you did a great job of putting this video clip together. Well Done. Thank you for putting this up.
i am 28 years old and have always loved music from the 50s and 60s and movies adorned with actors such as fred astaire , ginger rogers etc i love it!!! I always tell everyone i am an old soul inside a young body !!! xox
It's wonderful to know that there are people like you in the world! I love to experience movies, music, art and other forms of culture that generations other than my own have experienced. That includes the very old as well as the current. When you take the time to explore the unfamiliar you expand your horizons, enrich your life, and cultivate valuable friendships with people of all ages. Thank you very much for your comment!
I agree 100%, sfratpack. I'm 58 years old ( 14 when this song came out ) and the girl groups were my favorites. But I only just heard this song for the first time about a month ago on XM radio. Thanks for posting it, BTW. I think if it had been pushed as the " A " side it would rank right up there with Da Doo Ron Ron as one of the best girl group songs ever.
ITA. I was also 14 when this 45 was released. To my ears, the Raindrops version sounds a little thin, like a Brill Building demo, while the Jelly Beans rendition has more flava.
This sounds like the Raindrops on valium

It won't make me foget the Raindrops' classic version, but it's pretty good anyway.

What a sound! And to think todays kids are at the mercy of the music industry pushing "hip hop" and Lady Ga-Ga.

This should have been pushed as the A side. It could and should have been a hit.
