Sure black smoke is cool but Gale Banks said it best. "Black smoke is power that you can see but you can't use." Bottom line, black smoke is unburnt fuel. Yes you can give a diesel as much fuel as you want and you will get more power. But, if you use a badass intercooler and cram as much condensed air as possible into the cylinders, you get less smoke and more power. But you also get insane head pressure and your block will literally split in two.

@SuperchargedMustang5 like it or not all I was saying is that diesels can all be equally "smoky" depending on modifications.. Take a 6.7 cummins for example do the necessary deletes then put on any tuner (h&s, smarty what have you) put the same tuner on a 5.9 straight piped common rail cummins and the 5.9 will smoke more because it gets less air from the factory.. Add a set of injectors and a larger turbo to a 6.7 and bingo it smokes like a 5.9

diesel works on compression of fuel, not like a car with spark, sparking gas is very inefficient and burns dirty.

@opossom1968 Proof of diesels being more efficient is the VW diesels get 42mpg, better than any gas engine the same displacement! Plus my dad used to have an '86 Suburban K10 and a website(fueleconomy . gov) said the gas engine(5.7L 4 barrel carb) gets 15 highway and the 6.2L diesel gets 20 highway. Bigger engine but better mpg(800 miles with the 40 gallon tank, in theory).

Get more people to run bio diesel and the environment is cleaner, plus diesels get better then gas engines! Problem Al Gore? @Orangys280Z I'm a 19 year old all models mechanic. Everytime I get a Diesel into the shop and we start going into an engine, we can tell if the person was running Bio or standard Diesel. All the trucks that needed a good cleaning (and occasionally a new part) was running the Bio crap. Yet I can't say we have had a propane runner in there. But Propane is the same price as Diesel where I'm at. But yes, Diesel does get better MPG than Gas Motors. I'd rather drive a Diesel than my edlebrock.

@Orangys280Z The Bio left sludge and made the exaust system seem pretty dirty. Since they put other things in Bio Diesel to "clean it up" the oil has more to work with instead of just plain Diesel. Especially when the Diesel truck wasn't running right in the first place. Exactly? No. Around here we just call it "Bio Crap" Your results may vary though. We work with older Diesels and I haven't seen a current Diesel motor yet.

I don't think thats runaway. How did he get it shut off? Runaway is when the motor runs off the engine oil, only way to shut it down is killing the air.

@rangaman86 I dont have any hands-on experience with the cummins engines so I cant profess to be any sort of expert, but Ive heard of the old mechanically injected ones having runaway type problems if they have a governor issues. The only way to shut it down is to turn the key off and close the fuel cut-off solenoid in the pump.

@rangaman86 But I would assume that this one has the typical VCM and electronically controlled injectors that the newer trucks have. At any rate, why would he take it up so high? Def. seems like something went wrong. Unlike a duramax, a cummins has some heavy ass pistons and rods. Engines like that dont do well at high RPMs, but I have to give it credit, though. If a Navstar/PS diesel got to RPMs that high, one of the pistons wouldve come apart at the wrist pin.

@mysock351W Its a 12v. You can make those things rev 5k easily. Its nots runnaway. They make them rev that high because the ppump will fuel that hi. They need the wheelspeed for sled pulling or drag racing or such. When a diesel is runnaway you can't just shut off the fuel, the truck isn't running off the fuel.

@rangaman86 I was reffering to a potential problem with the mech. injection pump. IIRC, those had a fuel cut-off solenoid. If for some reason the pump keeps fueling the engine past its set point, it can still be shut down by turning off the key. Obviously different then blowing a turbo seal, where it has to run out of oil (or have air cut off) to shut down.
