  • My son is liberal/pedagogical home educated. Three hours a day of studies and that's it for the books. The rest of his time is spent in taking care of his pets, volunteering at nursing homes, homeless shelters and church dispensaries for the poor,or just enjoying being a child. True learning isn't all about textbooks and worksheets. The world is the best classroom of all. He always says his public school friends are out of touch with reality, materialistic,or unable to think for themselves.

  • @reptilia5 unschooling isn't homeschooling. unschooling is when you don't teach them math or basic common knowledge they should know. homeschooling is fine in my opinion but this isn't them. it's basically kids who can't answer 2+2.

  • @lovelyxskinny No argument here. Good point!

  • x+y=z? wtf

  • @SarahWalsh95 It's a simple Algebraic formula. Are you public schooled? My ten year old home educated child knows the answer to this one!

  • @reptilia5 Was public schooled yes. I most probally use this x+y=z everytime i'm in maths, but i still don't understand what it is. Its like i have skill in maths but don't know the basic knowlage, i'm dyslexic so it takes me ages to do simple timetables because of my memory. I also have AS (type of autism). Maths is one of my skills and got entered into a early exam when i was 14 getting a B. I can do complex equations but do not understand what i'm doing if i'm asked to do a certain part.

  • Oh look, someone's found a novel way to raise mush-mouthed layabouts.

  • Is it just me or dose those kids talk funny??

  • You people at ABC need to get out more.

  • Talk about close minded people. I was unschooled just like these kids are from 1st grade all the way up until my 2nd year of High School and when i got into High School, sure, at first everything was nerve racking and confusing, but eventually i caught on to how everything worked and my worst grades were C+'s. So no, not everyone who unschools is going to be stupid, or fail if they ever try going to school. When i was unschooled, i for one loved reading over watching tv.

  • "Are you prepared for college?"

College?!!? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL! Ohhhh, that was a good laugh.

  • "Whuhevah, I do wut I waunt!!!"

The Maury show thanks you in advance...tards.

  • How do you give children choices let there branches grow in the direction they choose. She acts as if these children have no choices. They proabably have more choices than other children because there not inhibitied by the school system.

  • I'm throwing up right nowat ABC News! Looks like social control to me rather than the roots of individualism. Our society loves sending children to school fighting over grades, tuition, and all the other dramas just to homogenize people.Look at the child suicides from school. Who knows algebra and uses it? Can you really? Yes.Her daughter stays up all night. And she looks socially well.Don't we all stay up all night? But you were seven what so you know? Bullshit!Worry,Worry,Worry!

  • ROFLLLLLLLLLLL

  • life is full of rules and boundaries and you always have to do things you don't want to do... how is unschooling setting them up for the harsh realities of the real world? can you IMAGINE their crushing disappointment when they eventually leave home and realise they have to work, pay taxes, do chores etc? i'd be surprised if they didn't get completely depressed!

  • @bassetts1899 exactly.

  • Get the asian woman named Jew to get an insight look into the life of these parents and their kids.

    asian...

    brilliant network. BRILLIANT!

  • "They watch TV, play games on the computer" - Who do they think makes TVs and programs computer games? People who went to college to learn engineering and programming, very advanced concepts that require knowledge of things like algebra. Unschooled kids won't have the abilities to do that.

  • @sydney1270 Okay, so just because these children aren't inside of a certain building it is COMPLETELY OUT OF THEIR ABILITY to learn anything? I can tell you are easily influenced by the media and uneducated about anything you are saying. You act like you know all about unschooling just because you watched a biased 5 minute video.

  • @gexgekko99 I like the idea of unschooling to an extent. I do think there should be some exposure to as much as possible. My problem with unschooling is that,at least for most part, theres no discipline or children being forced to do things they don't want to AT ALL. I have no problem with parents wanting to use the world as their classroom, I plan to,for the most part.

  • @gexgekko99 I have seen other videos and have no problem with homeschooling- would consider it myself. These kids probably have a great ability to learn things, maybe more so than regular school kids, but their parents might be leaving out some important topics that could restrict them later in life. Unschooling is a broad term anyway, I'm mostly criticizing these specific parents.

  • @sydney1270 They have a bright future with nametags and hairnets at the local fast food place.

  • I thought parents are there to give you tools, to teach you, to prepare you! No wonder so many unintelligent people in this country!!! I bet if I talk to one of those "unschooled" kids they would have no Idea what I am talking about because I have knowledge and they dont...forget me, I bet they would be blank if my little sister talked to them. Do they know how hygiene is important? They wont get in to college, get real...community college maybe,GED or none college lvl classes?

  • @kaitawake Who flagged your comment as spam? It makes perfect sense and isn't spam.......

  • @gexgekko99 I'm not sure...I'm not sure how to check that. Hopefully the resistance will eventually result in further questioning and a more evenhanded future presentation of unschooling.

  • This is NOT what unschooling its about. Unschooling is about giving your child a world of options so they can be interested in some of them and truly learn about them. Is not about let them watch tv all day, spend the whole day in bed or eat unhealthy food instead of being learning.

  • IMO, the parents in this video are clueless--as fully clueless as the "experts" in the video dismissing what they parents are doing.

I also think children should be "unschooled" (in a sense), but I think they can benefit GREATLY from wise GUIDANCE and INTERACTION. Left to themselves, kids will go mostly nowhere (but probably be quite happy). But happiness is not everything in life--one needs to be able to navigate the world and society, if only to STAY ALIVE!

  • @GetMeThere1 Parents supposed to be the greatest teachers and prepare kids for the future so I have to agree with you. Kids can always try freedom in the summer, in real life when mommy and daddy are gone, what will happen than?

  • these parents could be teaching these children great skills like boating, gardening, building their own furniture, etc. there are so many manual things as well as artistic things (i don't see these kids trying to write books, doing art, or making clothes) that will help someone grow as an individual. so i definitely think these parents are neglecting their kids and reducing their ability to be successful and self-sustained adults.

  • @dauphine719 thats called homeschooling not unschooling or what ever it is that they call it.

  • Flag as propaganda.

  • An interview needs

    a) facts

    and

    b) unbias

This is the 3rd interview I've seen about 'unschooling' from ABC that has more commentary than actual interviewing,

Prove that children being schooled are more prepared for college and society than those that don't. Otherwise, this interview is full of conjecture and heresay.

Fact is dropout rates are high. Its quicker to learn algebra or calculus through youtube than high school. Maybe the old model is outdated and too costly?

  • Poor example of homeschooling and unschooling, ABC News. But I'm sure that's what you look for when wanting to demonize or think you're "exposing the dangers of homeschooling." This family is not typical of the rest of us. I homeschool, but I'm also very relaxed and allow my children to explore their own interests. Core learning, then interests is the way to go. That way they have their basics and the rest is all icing on the cake.

  • @courtney31chris32 Well said.

  • Is there no "gap" between what formal education promises and what it delivers? And who is to define life success? Does public school offer options to chiildren so they can explore outside the box? As a substitute teacher I see so many classrooms and no , sadly I see very little that even invites thinking outside the box, let alone exploring what's inside kids' heads.

  • Lazy parents. Get ready for them to live in your basement as adults.

  • @mswendyraye Yes, they are so lazy. The only lazier thing they could do is send those kids to a building where they don't have to parent and don't have to help their kids learn what they choose to learn. The people there do it for them. I can't believe how lazy these parents are being, trying to help their kids actually learn what they want to learn instead of taking the easy way out and sending them to a school.

  • These kids are going to grow up to be morons....if they aren't already.

  • @HRRyan2 Kind of like you?

  • Yeah, EDUCATORS think this looks like playing hooky...never mind that they have a vested interest in the number of butts in their seats everyday. I, for one, have learned far more on my own than I ever did in K-12 or in college, and I went to school back in the day BEFORE standardized tests.

  • How much of the crap that they forced on you in school did you ever actually use? How many tests did you fret over, bullies you suffered through, when you might have been off learning about computer animation or practicing an instrument you loved?

  • Kids are innately curious. All they need is time to follow their loves and their obsessions.

  • can I be unworked?? cause I'd love to sit on my ass all day and watch tv....yeah thats realistic!

  • Everyone knows you have to work at things to be successful, you don't have to be institutionalized to figure that out.

  • this neglect, I would report these parents! This is NOT unschooling this is not wanting to have the responsibility that comes along with parenting. These kids are in NO WAY prepared for reality. If you want to watch real unschooling watch Couture's videos.

  • that family is neglectful they are NOT unschoolers.

  • the problem is in the real world they will have to follow rules and deadlines imposed on them by bosses. How do these kids learn things like chemistry?

  • Those kids look bored as fuck

  • Sooo what happens when it's time for your kids to get a job? That'll go over well with an employer. Never mind not having a high school diploma, they don't even have grade 8. Enjoy your kids still living at home with you when they're 40!

  • Id love to see her meet Amy Chuan!

  • the producers probably picked out the most extreme family and did the piece on them. still, this is amusing purely because it pisses off the control freaks.

  • net. BTW I also really wanna do stuff that dosent need further education beyond my current point. Well besides in the subject itself which isn't taught at school. Or at a VERY basic level eg when I was 8. I may just be really advanced but I think school helps a bit but not going to school helps alot more.

  • This would actually help them when they get out of school. Also seriously? Out of all the stuff which I have been to exposed to at school barely any of it has helped. When I had to do a sport I had to fucking do it or I would get punished. My brother actually did investing. I get that needs maths but as you can see even the little kids know maths. I learn alot more stuff from games then from school. I learn how to spell hell I learned more about science then most kids while playing on the inter

  • @991woot119 yes a lot of stuff in school is superfluous, However what is and isn't cannot be determined so quickly and part of life is doing what you don't want.

  • if they dont know education then they can't live on there own

  • Way to stereotype unschooling.
