Trade in value in 5 years will be???? 20 miles to a charge for $45000. And your good with that? A Chevy Cobalt would cost you $18000 and go 25 miles for $3.79. Do the math, just sayin.
i have driven one at my job at a chevy dealer and its pretty cool car you can drive it like 20 miles on electric which is enough for most every day commutes
Bad decision, Leno. Maybe you'll wake up some day and get beyond propaganda from the company that knocked back the electric vehicle industry for 10 years...and still continuing. Selling the patent on large format NiMH batteries to Texaco was absolutely intentional and with full knowledge of what Texaco / Chevron would do with it. GM sucks balls and will continue to do so for many years...if they survive the next downturn....
Two fires occurred in Chevy Volts _weeks_ after a side-impact crash test while the cars were sitting in crash-test junkyards, and the nature of these fires was far from life threatening. Not one Volt has caught fire in a customer used Volt in a real-world scenario. The Wikipedia page for the Chevy Volt lists more details.
Every driver of a normal gas powered car faces far more risk from a post-crash fire from a gasoline leak than they'll ever face from a battery fire in a volt.
why you getting a volt ? because they giving it to me and they pay me to talk praise about their crap brand. lols good call chevy a comic that sucks is a perfect math up with a car company that sucks
@RichardJoash hey whatever floats your boat for me i dont need to drive more than 40 miles a day and i can charge for free in between but really its the slightly high pitched wine of a pure electric motor that turns me on
Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits. Blood money car,you could have been or might still be in one.
@tuugfo Here's the interesting thing about your statment. didn't G.M produce an electric car called the EV1 in 1996. If so that means you had a 16 year head start on the technology. Ahead if it's time my behind! Is that another way of saying that because we seem to need it now, we'll be required to pay through the nose for it. I seem to remember that it was the cosumers that helped keep you afloat and this is how you repay them. Again thanks.
@tuugfo The Volt is a farce. It will never catch up to the Prius...not even close. If anything...the Volt will go back on the shelf...LOL. GM essentially put the large format NiMH battery out of production by fooling Ovionics..and taking their patent and selling it to Texaco / Chevron. The NiMH battery was the one thing that could have competed directly with the ICE about 10 years ago. They brought all electric vehicle production to a halt when they did that. They deserve to suffer.
@paulfornasier Ok,Mr."know-it-all"...whatever suits your fancy!...GM made record profits last year in 2011 and almost sold 10,000 Chevy Volts worldwide!...not bad for a first-year effort car with new technology. Keep spewing your hatred of American cars, idiot!...nobody cares about you, moron!!!
@1aceves It has nothing to do with being American.....it has to do with the fact that GM doesn't really give shit...on the executive end....about electric vehicles. They destroyed the worldwide industry in a way that is immeasureable...do you get that? Do you realize that the large format NIMH battery could have competed with the internal combustion engine. They fooled Ovionics into a partnership...and then sold their technology to Chevron...and shit it all down. This is FACT...
@1aceves AND....10 k in one year is absolutely terrible...when they set 100k as their target... Welcome to competition.... Prius has sold several million already...and is being used all over the place by taxi companies.
@1aceves Hey...did you hear that they are actually shutting down the production line for the Volt for a month or so?? They keep missing their target sales. Last year was actually 10k and they sold just over 7k. This year was supposed to be 100 k...and now lowered to 40k...and they are still selling only about 1k per month. It's actually quite bad. My prediction..right from the intro, was that this version of the vehicle will die.. It won't be sustainable, unless severely discounted.
@1aceves I keep screwing up on my research numbers......the sales target for this year is not 40k...it is 60k...and they only sold about 1600 in the first two months of the year....just barely on target to hit 10k THIS year.....
I hate it when everybody's always America vs. Japan in these things. Every car appeals to different people in different ways, and every car company has it's fair share of problems. Toyota with the pedals, or Chevrolet with the low-quality older vehicles. Things change, people! It's almost 2012, just let them go. Learn that and stop being racist assholes!
Friend has one and it's really neat if your into techo stuff. I've driven it and along with handling real good, it's fast! It is pretty expensive though.
Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits," OMG just found out,NO VOLT FOR ME this is just sick. Guess its ok with Mr Leno.
StompingRabbits, YOU ARE THE BIGGEST SHIT EVER! THE VOLT IS BETTER THAN THE LEAF BECAUSE YOU ARE A TROLL! YOU SHOULD BE ARRESTED BY THE OBAMA GOVERNMENT AND THE LEAF WILL GO TO THE JUNKYARD WITH RANGE ANXIETY WITH IT! IT IS UNFAIR TO BASH THE VOLT LIKE A TOTAL IDIOT! FROM NOW ON, THE VOLT WILL BE TREATED EQUALLY, YOU SH93147982135723491346139130924875324857120512405R923410752085702985R72048089T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Jay was wrong about the power. The Volt will never run on the engine, it's always electricity. When the electricity drops to a certain point, the 4-cylinder engine will kick in and turn a generator, but that does not turn the wheels. The Volt only goes 35 miles before it must be recharged (via plug-in or with the onboard generator. And yes, I sell the Volt at a Chevrolet dealer.
@idontcare80 well see all hybrids do use the engine to move the car like the toyota prius, honda insight, but the chevy volt is diffrent it doesnt use the engine to power the wheels, is just there to charge the batt when its low, the volt is full electric when it comes to driving!!!! hope this helps!!!
You're right! I just looked it up at Wikipedia. The engine sometimes drives the wheels if needed. It's called Voltec Drive. Was designed by the GERMAN engineer Frank Weber.
@idontcare80 Not to argue, but as a certified GM product consultant, and having driven the Volt many times, and recieved product training, I assure the Volt is not a Hybrid, but a pure electric, with a 149 horsepower generator onboard. The generator is not physically tied to the drive (only via electric wires).
@0:15 the Prius is old technology? Not quite. Just a different idea on how to use the power. He just doesn't like anything that's not a Chevy or Ford. The Volt is 15K more expensive compared to Prius and Leaf.
The Volt can't recharge its own battery from the gas engine. Once it runs out of battery in 40 miles, it switches to gas. It still must be plugged in like the Leaf at the end of the day. Also note that the Leaf and Volt are almost the same in 0 to 60 speed.
@bobbyraejohnson That's why Ford just joined forces with Toyota to put Toyota hybrid technology in Ford SUV's and trucks. Ford was already using Toyota's previous generation system in the Ford Fusion just as Nissan used it in the Altima hybrid.
Now that's respect: when the competition comes to you for help.
@721bigron no, they did not use thier technology. there were similarities, but it was unintentional. as for trucks, they probably wont sell in any large numbers so why invest all thier money in it? its more of a cost sharing than anything, and no tech will go between ford and toyotas trucks. look at the gm hybrid trucks, expensive, no power, cant tow and you will never make back your money from buying it and nobody buys them.
@teejate It's not all about Toyota being #1 now. They found out the hard way that trying to sell the most cars in the world means missing the focus on quality details they were known for. GM knows all about that. Toyota will still be OK but it's about Hyundai/Kia now (you remember...the one everyone laughed at in the 80's?) They are starting to give everyone a run for the money and have Japanese and American manufacturers concerned.
@jeffhanson1 OK...but my POINT was that GM, which was on the brink of bankruptcy just a couple of years ago now makes more cars than any other company in the world.. This is following hundreds of thousands of American jobs that were saved by the auto bailout.
The quality of the cars is one thing. The success of a U.S. company is another. That was the point I was making.
Awesome car! The Prius can't hold a stick to the Volt. It's not even a true electric car. I like the fact that the Volt has a small gasoline engine as a backup when you need it but it can still run 45 miles depending on driving conditions on straight electric. Jay Leno's a true auto enthusiast. He's cool!
@Mahdi786FWE When was the Prius an electric vehicle? It was built as a hybrid, not as an electric. I really enjoy it when one idiot supports another. I don't think Jay Leno is a complete idiot on cars but on the electric cars, he knows very little (or at least seems like he does).
Thats all you get for $41,00 ? Why cant i get a Japanes Mini truck. US gov said the mini trucks are not allowed. The big three dont want them here because it hurt the bad quality union made cars
Jay, you lie! You bought it because it will be a museum piece in a couple of years...sort of like an Edsel! I also, figure that Government Motors gave it to you for the publicity!
@40172 - Jay probably makes enough dough for one episode of his lame Tonight Show to pay for that electric Edsel and he'll probably drive it once a month and he'll look like a dick doing it! Shame on you Jay! That piece of shit is a prime example of why American industry should never marry a politician! This isn't the fucking former Soviet Union and it never will be either! Jay and his progressive buddies can eat the corn out of my shit, that Chevy Dolt is the biggest piece of shit ever!
@StompingRabbits U have some issues, seek professional help, perhaps they will introduce you to some much needed shock therapy! Its a great car new and innovated, a great start, why are you so down on it. I am no Green Nazi, its sporty and has awesome pick-up and great handling, this is Green with style and practicality! Unlike the Prius
@byronintegrated - I have some issues? WTF?? The Volt is a humungous boondoggle and everyone knows it! The purpose of GM is to build cars that people want to buy for profit not push a political ideology! "Great cars" don't have anemic unit sales furthermore if it was really such a "great car" then the government wouldn't need the $7,500.00 bribe to coax the public into buying them. Truly "great cars" could be offered for a reasonable profit and the free market would decide! You're a sick moonbat
@byronintegrated - You're right, I do have issues, I specifically take issue with dopes like you insisting that the Volt is anything more then a glorified golf cart. Did they even sell 4,000 of those electric clunkers yet after 7 months? Why the need for the $7,500.00 Government rebate on each Volt? Afraid of letting free market enterprise decide if it's worthy or not? I heard the heater is inadequate and the air-conditioner over taxes the batteries! You're off your rocker Obatard not me!
@byronintegrated - Instead of just throwing out the typical liberal petulance insisting that I need "professional help" for my "issues", why don't you explain with specifics why that electric Edsel is so good in your opinion? Surely you have more to say other then the "sporty" and "awesome pickup" (roflmfao) comments? How much profit do you think GM stands to make on each Volt you dingbat? I'll tell you, nada, nothing, zip, zero...that's right, GM & the U.S. Treasury are gonna lose their shirts
@byronintegrated - I didn't call you a "green NAZI" however you are most assuredly a deranged individual if you think the Volt is a "great car." Let me remind you of a pertinent fact Obatard, truly "great cars" sell themselves and don't need government rebates furthermore great cars earn profit for their manufacturer! How much profit do you think GM will make on the Volt? I'll give you a hint.... < !! That's right, GM will not make one single red cent of profit on that piece of crap not one!
@byronintegrated - If you think that electric Edsel is a awesome in any way then you're the one in need of professional help not me furthermore "practical?" I want a bag of whatever dope it is that you smoke.....idiot!
If you happen to be filthy rich like Jay here is and you can afford a garage bigger then most peoples houses with 30+ cars in it then why not go for a Chevy Dolt? Jay can afford to spend $40,000.00 on an electric Edsel for shits & giggles but what about the rest of us?
@MoltenMozzarella - Are you fucking kidding me? Even if I could convince a bank to secure me a $40,000.00 car loan, I wouldn't buy that piece of crap at gunpoint!
Mark my words, the Chevy Volt will go down in history as a prime example of a liberal boondoggle and a massive commercial failure! GM sold their soul to Satan and Satan wanted a crappy electric car that's basically a glorified golf cart!
I used to like Jay Leno, now he's a snake oil salesman and a Obozo flunky in my eyes!
The Volt was the start, but far from the answer to the EV market. The volt is cute, but on further examination it does not measure up with seating limited to (4) four at $47,000! In extreme cold weather, the range is very limited from the tests I have seen. The heater is very poor. Now, it is time to start on the next generation with improved batteries and range coupled with reduced cost. Please, figure where to put the batteries without losing a seat.
@avengful for me it would work. i commute 45 miles to work round trip on flat ground in the SF bay area. if u drive over 100 miles a day more than 5% of the time, then yeah, i wouldnt get a leaf. i only do that maybe 1% of the time, so it makes sense for me and most americans. renting is expensive, but if u only have to do it 1% of the time, it's still cheaper than owning a gas car, cuz electricity is 1/6 the cost of gas, and maintenance on an EV is DRASTICALLY cheaper than a gas car.
@avengful the AVERAGE is 100 miles. actual results by real world customers are between 70-130. I have even seen a report of a guy getting 134 miles on a charge. merge on the freeway? these things have faster acceleration that most cars because the EV motor gives instant torque. if my car has groceries in it, you can guarantee i'm not driving over 100 miles that day. 100 miles will get the majority of people 2 where they need 2 go 95+% of the time. as i said before, i'd just rent the other times.
@craniumdesigns - Oh horseshit! What about people who live in the colder and hotter areas of the country? The Dolt's heater and air-conditioner are both overbearing on the batteries furthermore I heard the heater is completely inadequate! What if you live in New England and your car gets covered with ice as happens to me every single winter without exception? You're shit out of luck in that scenario aren't you? This car is a ridiculous liberal boondoggle and a piece of shit!
@craniumdesigns - Rent? Are you fucking ideological unhinged or what? What's the purpose of spending over 100 billion on developing this piece of crap when they could have just legalized golf carts for short trips? The primary purpose of GM is to build and sell quality cars for profit that people want to buy! It's not to push a political agenda at the expense of the American tax payer! You should be ashamed of yourselves for promoting this glorified golf cart and the waste of money it is!
Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits," OMG just found out,NO VOLT FOR ME.
Great car! Im sure it will be as good as a prius but leno should not buy it just cause its "american" his comments were a bit mediocre! Good luck with that car though jayjay!
Adam TROMBLY // Douglas KAHN - Homopolar Generator, James L. GRIGGS Hydrosonic pump & overunity, Stan Meyers, Yull Brown, again as I stated before I am not talking about overunity that has already been accomplished and squashed. Just a very simple charging system with an extremely efficient generator head that takes little HP to turn and puts out 220V its very simple math, not thermodynamics. No luck needed a little financial backing and I can guarantee positive results.
I can see why both you and your father served in the gay parade....err i mean army. The world is not so complex in the army, don't have to think as much.
As for Norway, its out of your league man. Find a country america can actually compete against. We're ranked top in almost any statistic you can find. You have a computer, USE it:p
And thats not blind patriotism, thats public facts and information.
Its perfectly fine to be proud of something specific, and then back it up with arguments. Like for instance freedom of speech, thats a right well protected in the US, and thats good for democracy ect... But just broadly thinking USA is the best in the world ect is just stupidity. Its like saying Apple is best without every trying Android.
I served in the Army too, although only in peace time. And I mean no disrespect to you or your father. Fighting in WW2 was right.
My problem with patritism is that it is blind, it basically means "don't ask any questions/don't think/don't be critical". Look up patriotism on wikipedia for instance. It ranks USA as the most patriotic nation in the world, with 3,92 out of 4 people answering that they are proud to be from that nation.
Most americans don't know much about the outside world, then how can they know home is something to be proud of? Blindness.
“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it.”
- George Bernard Shaw
Thats why I hate patriotism, especially when it comes to greedy corporations that don't give a rats ass about anything else than profit.
Don't get me wrong, the Volt is probably a fine vehicle. I just think its a huge mistake to choose it because of patriotism, if it is the lesser of two products. That is counterproductive to true competition.
I'm actually extremely proud of Chevrolet and how they were one of the first ones in the American market to bring something like this out. Although I don't agree with how little faith they have in electricity, I think it will get people buying American cars and pushing the technology further.
Just so everyone knows, the Model S by Tesla gets 300 per charge, and they charge only takes 45 minutes.....
All somebody has to do is modify one of these cars with a generator head to a rear wheel so the battery is charging constantly, not just when you brake. It only takes 4 horse power to run the generator head to sufficiently charge this battery full time, there is no need for fuel at all or home charging. Big oil scrapped this project years ago because of this fact.
@46Mongoose would that work? how many hp to turn the rear wheels? There should be a deficit i.e. no net charge of the battery. The car's motor would have to push the rear wheels >4 hp harder [say 6hp] to turn your your 4hp generator-ever noticed your engine throttles up at idle, or speed decreasing slightly when you turn on the AC? That is from extra stress on the drive shaft from turning the AC compressor. Best way to return energy to battery is from braking (down slope help you save energy)
@rawlew1736 Sir I believe with proper gearing a generator head would not even require 4HP one could get it down to 1/4 horsepower or less. With proper gearing you can lift 100,000 pounds with a 10HP motor. I am not talking about overunity or free energy, just a very efficient recharging system that is not a drain on our planet.
@46Mongoose Yes you can lift 100k pounds with a 10hp motor-but here you are comparing forces-not energy. In reality according to our best current understanding of the laws of energy/thermodynamics-the motor MUST expend energy than actually used to lift the weight-I does with a smaller force by moving a cable through a longer distance than the weight itself moves. Energy=force x distance.
noticed how your car idles up when you turn on the AC or slow down a bit if you're cruising on a the freeway? The extra energy to run the AC compressor (belts attached to drive shaft) takes power away from the drivetrain -the engine computer/electronics quickly reacts to boost up the power of the engine to maintain speed or idle rpm. Look 'perpetual motion machines" on wiki or just google it-maybe in the future these laws will be broken but as of now-they RULE ALL ENERGY CONVERSIONS!
@rawlew1736 Yes I completely understand your position and inability to think outside the box, yet as I have postulated above there would be hardly any drain at all on the drivetrain. Once these vehicles become more abundant and lithium ion batteries begin to flood the market at fair value and synchronous motors become mass manufactured men like me will be building the vehicles of the future, bank on it.
@46Mongoose Look I know you are disappointed to hear something you are excited about would simply not work. Hey don't throw words at ME-I was just explaining the laws of thermodynamics. Have you studied any physics ? (not everyone into technology has-& thats OK). It always great when one can think unfettered by specialized knowledge which tends to constrain our thoughts indeed-however thinking "outside of the box" and magical thinking w/o logical explanation are very different things. GL pal!
@rawlew1736 -check out wikipedia or just do a google search -to see how hard you will have to think and work to break these laws. Everyone would be exhilarated once you make this happen and if you patent it....
@rawlew1736 Many ask this question-its very tempting to think it is possible. No matter how small the energy req to it will always slow down the car by a greater amount of energy. This is taken care of by the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics. We think a car can simply generate its own energy b/c of the alternators on today's cars-actually alternators cause an EXTRA strain on the ENGINE (essentially a gasoline power plant-it is NOT driven by kinetic energy of the car!)
electricity will take u to 95% of the spots u need to hit. just rent a car when u need to go over 100 miles in a day. how often does that actually happen for most people?
@craniumdesigns - If you want something for short drives around town then why didn't they just legalize golf carts instead of looting the United States Treasury in order to develop and market this ridiculous piece of shit? The purpose of GM is to make cars people want to buy for profit not to loot the treasury in order to make a political statement! This is a boondoggle and a complete waste of the tax payer money! It's a $47,000.00 glorified golf cart and a piece of this that isn't selling!
@craniumdesigns or you can go with the electric car and stop for couple of hours (when you are close to the 100 miles) till that car is charging go to the mall or something and then off you go.
You don't need to charge the car to 100% (8 hours) you can stop some ware for hour or two that is enough to charge the car to let's say 30% witch is lets say 30 miles
@daswada9 - What a load load of bollocks! Some say that 30 miles is 100% especially if you live in a temperate region of the country! That car is the biggest waste of money and piece of shit imaginable! What happens if ice covers the fucking windshield and you need to use the defroster? How many hours will the battery need to be charged to accomplish that task?
The fucking thing is a glorified golf cart! Why didn't GM save us a zillion dollars and just start building golf carts?
@daswada9 - I'm not crazy about either car but the Nissan Leaf is making it's way through the free market unlike the Chevy Dolt! The purpose of GM isn't to push a political ideology, it's to manufacture cars that people want to purchase at a profit! The government has to bribe people to buy the Volt despite already having funded it's development and the manufacturing facilities that build it! They will never admit that the piece of shit is a huge commercial failure, they can't!
Let me guess GM gave him this car for free. Another useless PR plug from a company that can't become more innovative then alot of other brands that are doing way better.
Trade in value in 5 years will be???? 20 miles to a charge for $45000. And your good with that? A Chevy Cobalt would cost you $18000 and go 25 miles for $3.79. Do the math, just sayin.

Last year was actually 10k and they sold just over 7k. This year was supposed to be 100 k...and now lowered to 40k...and they are still selling only about 1k per month. It's actually quite bad. My prediction..right from the intro, was that this version of the vehicle will die.. It won't be sustainable, unless severely discounted.
paulfornasier 19 hours ago
@1aceves I keep screwing up on my research numbers......the sales target for this year is not 40k...it is 60k...and they only sold about 1600 in the first two months of the year....just barely on target to hit 10k THIS year.....

I hate it when everybody's always America vs. Japan in these things. Every car appeals to different people in different ways, and every car company has it's fair share of problems. Toyota with the pedals, or Chevrolet with the low-quality older vehicles. Things change, people! It's almost 2012, just let them go. Learn that and stop being racist assholes!

PrivatePilot66 5 months ago
@PrivatePilot66 Wrong, the engine does drive the wheels under certain operating conditions.
Google: volt not a true series hybrid
idontcare80 3 months ago
@idontcare80 well see all hybrids do use the engine to move the car like the toyota prius, honda insight, but the chevy volt is diffrent it doesnt use the engine to power the wheels, is just there to charge the batt when its low, the volt is full electric when it comes to driving!!!! hope this helps!!!
NitroExplosion88 3 months ago
@NitroExplosion88 Nope, sorry. The engine is actually mechanically connected to the wheels under some operating conditions.
Again, Google: volt not a true series hybrid
idontcare80 3 months ago
@idontcare80
You're right! I just looked it up at Wikipedia. The engine sometimes drives the wheels if needed. It's called Voltec Drive. Was designed by the GERMAN engineer Frank Weber.
Muhlineks 3 months ago
@Muhlineks it's similar to trains that uses the same technology from the Volt
RichardJoash 1 month ago
@idontcare80 Not to argue, but as a certified GM product consultant, and having driven the Volt many times, and recieved product training, I assure the Volt is not a Hybrid, but a pure electric, with a 149 horsepower generator onboard. The generator is not physically tied to the drive (only via electric wires).
PrivatePilot66 3 months ago
@PrivatePilot66 AGAIN, Google: Volt not a true series hybrid.
Or, explain the need for the clutches and planetary gear inside the generator.

Also note that the Leaf and Volt are almost the same in 0 to 60 speed.
jeffhanson1 6 months ago
@jeffhanson1 no prius is old technology
bobbyraejohnson 6 months ago
@bobbyraejohnson That's why Ford just joined forces with Toyota to put Toyota hybrid technology in Ford SUV's and trucks. Ford was already using Toyota's previous generation system in the Ford Fusion just as Nissan used it in the Altima hybrid.
Now that's respect: when the competition comes to you for help.
721bigron 6 months ago
@721bigron no, they did not use thier technology. there were similarities, but it was unintentional. as for trucks, they probably wont sell in any large numbers so why invest all thier money in it? its more of a cost sharing than anything, and no tech will go between ford and toyotas trucks. look at the gm hybrid trucks, expensive, no power, cant tow and you will never make back your money from buying it and nobody buys them.

teejate 6 months ago
@teejate It's not all about Toyota being #1 now. They found out the hard way that trying to sell the most cars in the world means missing the focus on quality details they were known for. GM knows all about that. Toyota will still be OK but it's about Hyundai/Kia now (you remember...the one everyone laughed at in the 80's?) They are starting to give everyone a run for the money and have Japanese and American manufacturers concerned.
jeffhanson1 6 months ago
@jeffhanson1 OK...but my POINT was that GM, which was on the brink of bankruptcy just a couple of years ago now makes more cars than any other company in the world.. This is following hundreds of thousands of American jobs that were saved by the auto bailout.
The quality of the cars is one thing. The success of a U.S. company is another. That was the point I was making.
Thanks.
teejate 6 months ago
Awesome car! The Prius can't hold a stick to the Volt. It's not even a true electric car. Jay Leno's a true auto enthusiast. He's cool!

byronintegrated 7 months ago
@byronintegrated - I have some issues? WTF?? The Volt is a humungous boondoggle and everyone knows it! The purpose of GM is to build cars that people want to buy for profit not push a political ideology! "Great cars" don't have anemic unit sales furthermore if it was really such a "great car" then the government wouldn't need the $7,500.00 bribe to coax the public into buying them. Truly "great cars" could be offered for a reasonable profit and the free market would decide! You're a sick moonbat
StompingRabbits 6 months ago
@byronintegrated - You're right, I do have issues, I specifically take issue with dopes like you insisting that the Volt is anything more then a glorified golf cart. Afraid of letting free market enterprise decide if it's worthy or not? I heard the heater is inadequate and the air-conditioner over taxes the batteries! You're off your rocker Obatard not me!

In extreme cold weather, the range is very limited from the tests I have seen. The heater is very poor. Now, it is time to start on the next generation with improved batteries and range coupled with reduced cost. Please, figure where to put the batteries without losing a seat.
crusso4708 8 months ago
@avengful for me it would work. i commute 45 miles to work round trip on flat ground in the SF bay area. if u drive over 100 miles a day more than 5% of the time, then yeah, i wouldnt get a leaf. i only do that maybe 1% of the time, so it makes sense for me and most americans. renting is expensive, but if u only have to do it 1% of the time, it's still cheaper than owning a gas car, cuz electricity is 1/6 the cost of gas, and maintenance on an EV is DRASTICALLY cheaper than a gas car.
craniumdesigns 8 months ago
@avengful the AVERAGE is 100 miles. actual results by real world customers are between 70-130. I have even seen a report of a guy getting 134 miles on a charge. merge on the freeway? these things have faster acceleration that most cars because the EV motor gives instant torque. if my car has groceries in it, you can guarantee i'm not driving over 100 miles that day. 100 miles will get the majority of people 2 where they need 2 go 95+% of the time. as i said before, i'd just rent the other times.
craniumdesigns 8 months ago
@craniumdesigns - Oh horseshit! What about people who live in the colder and hotter areas of the country? The Dolt's heater and air-conditioner are both overbearing on the batteries furthermore I heard the heater is completely inadequate! This car is a ridiculous liberal boondoggle and a piece of shit!
StompingRabbits 8 months ago
@craniumdesigns - Rent? Are you fucking ideological unhinged or what? What's the purpose of spending over 100 billion on developing this piece of crap when they could have just legalized golf carts for short trips? As for Norway, its out of your league man. Find a country america can actually compete against. We're ranked top in almost any statistic you can find. You have a computer, USE it:p

TheSaltyAdmiral 9 months ago
@steverooni99

Blindness.
TheSaltyAdmiral 9 months ago
@steverooni99

Just so everyone knows, the Model S by Tesla gets 300 per charge, and they charge only takes 45 minutes.....
minkisgod 10 months ago
All somebody has to do is modify one of these cars with a generator head to a rear wheel so the battery is charging constantly, not just when you brake. It only takes 4 horse power to run the generator head to sufficiently charge this battery full time, there is no need for fuel at all or home charging. Big oil scrapped this project years ago because of this fact.
46Mongoose 10 months ago
@46Mongoose would that work? how many hp to turn the rear wheels? There should be a deficit i.e. no net charge of the battery. The car's motor would have to push the rear wheels >4 hp harder [say 6hp] to turn your your 4hp generator-ever noticed your engine throttles up at idle, or speed decreasing slightly when you turn on the AC? That is from extra stress on the drive shaft from turning the AC compressor. Best way to return energy to battery is from braking (down slope help you save energy)
rawlew1736 9 months ago
@rawlew1736 Sir I believe with proper gearing a generator head would not even require 4HP one could get it down to 1/4 horsepower or less. With proper gearing you can lift 100,000 pounds with a 10HP motor. I am not talking about overunity or free energy, just a very efficient recharging system that is not a drain on our planet.
46Mongoose 9 months ago
@46Mongoose Yes you can lift 100k pounds with a 10hp motor-but here you are comparing forces-not energy. In reality according to our best current understanding of the laws of energy/thermodynamics-the motor MUST expend energy than actually used to lift the weight-I does with a smaller force by moving a cable through a longer distance than the weight itself moves. Energy=force x distance.
rawlew1736 9 months ago
noticed how your car idles up when you turn on the AC or slow down a bit if you're cruising on a the freeway? The extra energy to run the AC compressor (belts attached to drive shaft) takes power away from the drivetrain -the engine computer/electronics quickly reacts to boost up the power of the engine to maintain speed or idle rpm. Look 'perpetual motion machines" on wiki or just google it-maybe in the future these laws will be broken but as of now-they RULE ALL ENERGY CONVERSIONS!
rawlew1736 9 months ago
@rawlew1736 Yes I completely understand your position and inability to think outside the box, yet as I have postulated above there would be hardly any drain at all on the drivetrain. Once these vehicles become more abundant and lithium ion batteries begin to flood the market at fair value and synchronous motors become mass manufactured men like me will be building the vehicles of the future, bank on it.
46Mongoose 9 months ago
@46Mongoose Look I know you are disappointed to hear something you are excited about would simply not work. Hey don't throw words at ME-I was just explaining the laws of thermodynamics. Have you studied any physics ? (not everyone into technology has-& thats OK). It always great when one can think unfettered by specialized knowledge which tends to constrain our thoughts indeed-however thinking "outside of the box" and magical thinking w/o logical explanation are very different things. GL pal!
rawlew1736 9 months ago
@rawlew1736 -check out wikipedia or just do a google search -to see how hard you will have to think and work to break these laws. Everyone would be exhilarated once you make this happen and if you patent it....
rawlew1736 9 months ago
@rawlew1736 Many ask this question-its very tempting to think it is possible. No matter how small the energy req to it will always slow down the car by a greater amount of energy. This is taken care of by the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics. We think a car can simply generate its own energy b/c of the alternators on today's cars-actually alternators cause an EXTRA strain on the ENGINE (essentially a gasoline power plant-it is NOT driven by kinetic energy of the car!)
