The word is not going away and the use of words change over time. Once whites stop using it in a facist way, it will probably stop over time but until then, blacks are gonna use it to take away it's power.
I disagree with Barbara that Wright advances ANY kind of bigoted agenda. Joy is correct that Wright was referring to the ancient Roman empire which was extremely violent, hateful, and dictatorial -- it was an oppressive, slavery based colonialist empire which brutally & violently oppressed it's own citizens- it killed JESUS! It is amazing that Barbara takes Wright's views (which actually condemn racism) completely out of context. Listen to Wright's FULL interview w/Bill Moyer for the TRUTH
WHY does no one ever mention the absolute double standard in the US. Blacks say Nigga ( NOT NIGGER!), Whites say honkey or cracker or trailer park trash, gays say fag or faggot, women say bitch, heavy people say FAT, asians say Chink, latins say wetback.... ECT...............Why then is all the attention always on black people? I just dont get it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we arent even the #1 minority anymore lol lol
To me, she seems like she's crying about the fact that SHE can't use the word. This white guys are mad about the same thing.
I think that if black perople want to use it, we should. If not, no. I personally don't use it, but I would rather hear it from someone of my background, who understands where we come from.

I detest Michael Steele and Hasselbeck also. But I have to agree with Steele when he says "I don't feel empowered when I hear that word, it doesn't empower me". It's always been like that in the black community. While you have someone getting educated, moving forward and being real role models of education, you have the same group insisting on using this word to keep the ignorant ones in the community under their grasp.
look if we don't use it then we don't have the discussion on weather to use it so lets just not use it. i agree with steele and mike on this one bob and the other one want it to be used but i dont because there is a double standered and Barbra walters had a point if she would have used it he would have been fired
I wonder how LetiLovesCoolJames would feel if white people started calling each other "Nazi" as "a positive word for us." Seriously dude, your argument is generalizing the entire white and black populations, which just isn't going to work. Not every black person in America uses this word; the same is true for whites. I understand that the use of the word has become a part of culture--can't say that I agree with it, though, given the history of the word.
White people who want to use this word as an offensive are gonna use it regardless, unfortunately thats just the type of people that they are; hateful.. Most white people have no reason to use it. Blacks are the ones keeping it in the day to day English language..
i don't think white people will ever understand. they have used this word through out history as a derogatory word. Now that We flipped the switch & made it a positive word for us, they cant handle it. there is no honest way to tell if a white person is saying it positively or not. a white person can call me the n word with a smile on his face but really and mean it derogatorily. Im not taking that chance so they shouldn't say it at all. They said the n word so much they should be tired of it!
thats what im saying, how do i honestly know if you are being cool or secretly being mean. but anyways, i try not to say that word because it was rooted as derogatory and i wont make the klan happy.
This whitey is not an N-word user. I hear it ALL the time among blacks. They use it in a positive manner and a negative manner, just like purple people could. The problem with most blacks, yes, MOST, is that they don't like whites and they are hypocritical.
Micheal Steele is a sell out. White man please stop trying to tell black people how they need to refer race who in the hell are you to tell someone black how they can refer to someone white started the damn term now trying to tell black people to do not use it give me a freakin break.
@sylvia1481 and who are you to say that its ok when you use it its not ok if you white friend uses it? The word has ONE meaning. If you can't get it through your thick racist head, or if you can't understand the hateful, evil history of that word than you definatelt shoudln't be using it. There is no such thing as turing that word positive for one community. lets get real here and wake up.
It does not take a thought process like that for racism to exist--racism will ALWAYS exist. The truth is that there is a qualitative different between a black person's life and a white person's life. While they can be very similar, minorities will ALWAYS experience some sort of discrimination that a majority would never be subject to. Contrary to your claim, it is recognition that the lives of black people and white people in America are inherently different that creates racial understanding.
Excellent point, as so far as until the gap is closed. Early english america got filthy rich doing filthy things. Time went on and slaves worked the land. Sometimes 20-30 slaves per one master.
This means blacks multiplied the profit 10 fold or so. So now America is sticking filthy rich.
If you don't want to use the word then don't use it, and if someone uses it in hate then again it's a problem, but like all words context is everything, saying 'What's up N" (Just picture the word there) said in a happy tone between two friends as a term of affection or as a joke hurt no one, apart from Hasselback but who gives a shit about that fucking cunt right?
Whites are the ones that made it a bad word, they're the ones that gave it the history that it has and now because they want to forget their own foolish and stupid behaviour they never want to hear that word again. Sorry, doesn't work that way.
Besides to be technical it's not a bad word, because there are no bad words. What there are are words with a bad use, a bad intention and in this case a bad history, but the word itself isn't bad. If people want to turn it into a good word, let them try
Ever notice that the people who make the biggest fuss over the N word is whites? Look at this clip, Hasselback and that Fox pundit are the two who seemed most upset by it and I figured out why. The N word was a word used to put down black, and once Blacks took it back to make it their word whites got mad, whites used to love that word but now that they can't use it any more they throw a tanty when they hear it and claim that it's a bad word and shouldn't be used.
It might be casul in some situations for a black person to call another black person that word. But if a white person were to say it to a black person the whole meening changes. Why is it ok forblack but not whites. Even though it's negative twards blacks, african american people use its negatively twards eachother and people see it as ok. Were coming back to this descrimination thing. People need to take the time and research what the word really meens and it has a hurtfull meaning.
Lots of black folks use this term as a greeting. They think becouse they're all african american they have the right to use that word. People of today seem to be forgetting or don't even know the history behind that word. It's a very powerful negative word and some people use it so freely it's straying from that negative tone. We don't want that it's a bad word. Not a casual thing to say to people. Yes lots of people greet each other like that but it doesnt make it right.
These people that are always talking about race like Whoopie Goldberg, Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Obama, etc. use their skin color to get attention, make it into a business and create trouble. Only if you are blind you won't see that they are black, but they are constantly calling themselves black, black, black, and creating racial problems. They are pathetic! They are gross. They are crap. They are worst than losers.
first of all because they are black it is funny how people say I do not see color or we should not refer to color bullshit were black white brown that is the way god made us I want people to see I am black but do not judge me on that color is not the issue ignorance is the issue
The N word situation does not cut both ways, The emotion and action behind the word is based upon the experience of the person you are directing it to and Who is saying It? Very Important to remember!
In order to begin address the problem of Racsim we must begin to recognize and embrace the notion that Racism in AMerica exist and that The Black American experieince is different.
We must look at how discrimination is engrained in our society and the very fiber of Our Great Constitution . We must address the necessity of Affirmative action and make reparations. Provide true equal opportunity for education, employment, business, and free enterprise.
White America will have to do more about the problem of Racism in America than crying and having a heated discussion about the N word on Public television. Whoopi was correct, historically our experience in America is different. The day that Hasselbeck accepts the reality that the Black Experience in AMerica is different... she will gain a better understanding.
I can call my brother or sister the N word, because they know I am not going to hang them from a tree after I said it!
Language is just a different means of enslavement.
Words have absolutely no power, in an of themselves. They are sounds, symbols on paper, scrawls and squiggles glowinf back to you on a computer screen...
They are nothing.
They mean whatever you MAKE THEM MEAN.
Who is anyone to tell me or anyone else, for that matter, what words they can and can't use? I believe that freedom of speech is by far more important than being politically correct.
so much to say but so little space. so here it is - the N word is never acceptable and we as black people ought to be able to invent or use our own self-empowering words rather than a historically derogatory word of our slave owners as a form of "endearment"
CRINGE @ 1:56. Come on.
