Bret Hart is a technically skilled wrestler... u cant compare someone like shawn michaels with likes of Bret hart... What shawn accomplished (for in ring abilities) over the end of his career, is what bret hart was in his throughout his career... Most ppl wud agree on this...
The greatest rivalry of all time. There will never, ever be another one like this. Shawn Michaels my favorite wrestler of all time, and Bret Hart, my second favorite. Two different lifestyles, values, and backgrounds. And what a clash it was. HBK vs. Hart=wrestling at it's absolute best.
It's so hard for me to pick a side on this. I can see both points of view. I think we were robbed on what would have been a pretty historic match. But I don't like how they treated Bret in this time frame.
@ThePluss182 bret hart was cool at promos until 97 when he started feeling some kind of anger but ur an idiot 2 say that hbk was a better wrestler...everyone in the wwe knoes dat bret hart was the best teqnicle wrestler of all time ask around dummie
@ThErAmWaNtShAm They were good friends. The tension arose in late '95/early '96 when Bret and Shawn were the #1 and #2 babyfaces in the WWF, respectively. Both were aiming for the same goal and started saying things about each other that became too personal. Also (of course this isn't covered in the new WWE DVD about their rivalry), both men have said in RF shoots that, looking back, Vince McMahon subtly played both guys against each other from '95 onwards and enjoyed working them into a shoot.
Wow, I have the Fab Four special (Jim Ross having exclusive separate sit down interviews with The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, and The British Bulldog all from 1997) on the DVD that I imported from the UK yet the comments made by both The Heartbreak Kid and The Hitman as shown in this video from those same interviews aren't on there!
HBK not only did his best to pull the WWF out of bankruptcy, but he carried the company on his back when they were on the ASS-END of the Monday Night WAR with WCW for 84 weeks.
The truth is that both of these guys are legends in their own right. Shawn was popular in the '90s and when he returned in 2002 because of the things he had. Bret was popular in the '90s because of the things he had. But both Bret and Shawn were popular due to their charisma during promos and matches. Shawn revolutionzed the industry with his ladder, marathon, and Cell matches while Bret revolutionized the industry with his toughness in the ring.
@murdt61 You think Brett is tougher then Shawn? Give me a history lesson, because last time I checked Shawn was the one that refused to be kept away from the business... Not Bret...
@Puddi77 better at what? the guy almost drove the wwf into bankruptcy. he was a great athlete, long tenured, and performed at a high level for nearly 20 years, but he was the best at nothing. certainly not in 1997.
@HearTBreaKiD023 YEAH and carried the entire promotion on his back while WCW were beating their asses in the ratings for 85 weeks on Monday Nights keeping the then-WWF now WWE alive.
@HearTBreaKiD023 HBK buried so much talent, he tried to bury both the Stone Cold and The Rock before he got injured, lucky for the WWF because both men were responsible for its success in the monday night wars.
@andross637 I'm just saying the idea of Shawn Michaels alone nearly driving the WWF into bankruptcy is ridiculous. Look at the times he was asked to carry the company, and they all were times when WCW was peaking. Hell, the formation of the nWo took place during Shawn's first WWF title run, so I think you have to dig a little deeper to see why the WWF was doing so poorly during that stretch than one person.
@derekwalker87 Yeah, silly me. The idea of a puny 5'10" man billed as the "Boy Toy", who is covered in mirrors and with a love heart tattooed on his arm, dancing around the ring, gyrating, overselling and kissing Vince McMahon wouldn't alienate the WWF's primarily male fanbase AT ALL. If it weren't for the nWo, who knows, maybe Michaels could have matched Austin as a draw.
@andross637 Bret Hart leaving because of Shawn Michaels for a few months had a big effect on why the WWF did poorly during '96. That and the midcard talent was terrible. Stone Cold was forming his character and Mankind and Goldust was an enjoyable character. Personally WWE in '96 wasn't that bad especially from mid '96 to late '96. 1997 was a great year in the WWE and I really don't know why the ratings didn't increase in that year. There's such a huge difference from '96 to '97
@osaji922 I mostly agree. Bret didn't leave in '96 because of Shawn, though. He was burnt out, had other projects on the go, and most of all, his contract was coming up. There's no denying Michaels was a top worker, but the male audience resented him. WWF was indeed great in '97, with Stone Cold main-eventing, and Bret, Taker, Mick, Shawn and others on the roster... a far superior product to WCW. Audiences take a long time to switch allegiance, though, once they've established a favorite show.
@derekwalker87 i have no idea why the wwf did so poorly back then. ive always prefered them to wcw. and the nwo was only cool to me for a few mnths then it got boring, i was never sucked into the goldberg hype (thank God) and their storylines were bogus. the wwf was always fresh back then so im still confused as to why they were getting stomped by wcw
@strrb75 Bc they booked Shawn Michaels' title run to make him look too goody 2 shoes. He had no real heels to work against since they also fucked up with how they booked Vader. He had an awesome match with Foley that had no build up at all.
He was having good matches, but the build up was the shits and the WWF midcard was filled with crap like Smoking Guns, Savio Vega, DOA, Smokey Mountain Wrestling, Hunter Hearst Helmsly, Rocky Maivia (Not HHH & The Rock)....WWE was actually quite shitty then.
@andross637 That's the most ridiculous statement, its ok to prefer shawn michaels mexican style of wrestling which he ripped off from Marty Jannety, but saying Bret Hart was a terrible athlete shows your lack of knowledge, youtube Brets history.
They had arguably the greatest rivalry because their working and stamina in the ring and the fact that both of them weren't scared to lose a match legitimately (by pinfall or submission) I miss those days.
@9Cjohnny Not even close. Bret and Shawn's rivalry was 110% authentic. Driven by passion, envy, and hate. Bret and Shawn's in ring skills far surpass that of Rock and Austin's.
Ive read both guys books, ive watched both guys dvds. I respect both men and find both to be the best in the business. But what happened then is Bret is and always will be a very old school guy. He believed in the "holiness" of kayfabing and respect. And shawn and his boys in the kliq destroyed all that. He always felt that the wwf should be a family friendly event and only when pushed too far by hbk and vkm did he change into the asshole that many people dislike. Want proof, read his book.
@jarose24 Exactly, and it never hurt WWF business any that the Bret and Shawn feud was a legitimate one as well.In the most unlikely of ways, the Montreal Screwjob essentially saved the company in the long run.
I was surprised Jim Cornette acknowledged Bret and Shawn's genuine dislike for each other on-camera.Then again,Jim Cornette was never one to sugar coat facts to begin with.
he insulted shawn the day before the ironman match and when he dug back at him telling him to get the fuck out of the ring you guys are having issues with that geez WAY to many bret hart nuthuggers out here
Does anyone know where to find the DVD "The Complete Story Of Shawn Michaels & Bret Hart" here in Canada? is that DVD a non North America release? I haven't seen that at any HMV if anyone knows or doubts check out Google images -go figure
Let's not try to be politically correct by saying Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart were equal because we KNOW that The Hitman was always better than the HeartBreak Kid. Bob Backlund, Ricky Steamboat, Dynamite Kid, Ric Flair, Ted Dibiase, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Mr. Perfect, Owen Hart, Kurt Angle were all better than Shawn Michaels. Bret Hart was better than all of them. And...Chris Benoit was a notch better than The Hitman himself.
@dakliq420: HBK was a humble worker, yes, but...only that. Personally for me, he was not under-rated. He got his due ovation for his limited skills. He had great promos (like Hogan) though. Something which Hitman wasn't exactly great at. That's why his skills which were "limited" ***AS ONLY COMPARED TO THE GREAT GUYS I MENTIONED*** were overlooked. The guys I mentioned unfortunately, weren't as famous as HBK.
@777amol kurt flair eddie jericho steamboat and benoit was just as popular as hbk. i do see what you're saying though, but i do believe hbk was defiantly a much better wrestler than you gave credit to.bret was more technical, but hbk was more complete,he could do it all.
@Callumjaw Im not Sure if You Watched The Bret Hart DVD But Im Pretty Sure the reason He Had That Attitude Was because When Shawn Michaels Won the Belt At Wrestlemania 12, After The Match, Shawn Michaels Told Bret "Get The Fuck Outta The Ring, Its My Time To shine" And Bret Said he Felt Disrespected. Crazy Thing is At WM13 They were suppose to Fight for the title Where Bret Was Suppose to win it Back But Shawn Complained About a Foot Injury. So if Hes Acting like a Cunt. You Know Why
I was like this feud but I've never actually cared for the iron match or any iron man match for that matter. I always thought their match at Survivor Series 1992 was the best match they ever had. I also always enjoyed their verbal battles better than their matched especially in 1997 when they would kind of half shoot on each other and throw in little personal comments about how they really felt towards one another. Whereas today the raw is heavily scripted no feeling of reality like these two.
It sounds to me that Bret Hart just didn't like Shawn Michaels. That's what I got from watching this video anyway. My impression was that Shawn Michaels did his gimmick, Bret Hart took it as his real life attitude, or Bret just thought that a gimmick like that didn't deserve the praise it was getting. Truthfully, I think that Bret Hart was jealous of Shawn Michaels. But hey, maybe I'm wrong, it won't surprise me if I am. Anybody know what the real life feud was about?
@TeeAiDee Everyone in the klique and other people said that shawn never turned it off outside the ring, and that Shawn used to be a total dick backstage. As far as anything happening backstage with bret and shawn, I don't know.
@xWWENamix Huh. Isn't that strange- every single person who seemed to have backstage problems turned out to be the biggest superstars in WWE history. Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Batista, and a few others whose names escape me.
@TeeAiDee Exactly! He lost to Hogan, lost to Cena, didn't win a title (Well, He did but that was short lived.) and he always got the short hand of the stick.
@xWWENamix Hogan was scheduled to lose to Shawn, but his ego wouldn't allow it. Watch the Hogan vs Shawn match at Summerslam, and you'll see Shawn mocking Hogan by over-selling. A lot. Also, I don't know what Vince is thinking with John Cena. He's constantly trying to make John Cena the face of the WWE, when the fans obviously don't like him. They've booed him since his Wrestlemania match with Triple H. Some say they booed him when he was wrestling with Kurt Angle.
@TeeAiDee I remember that. I was laughing so hard. I think Hogan actually considered that a good match. I don't like hogan though. Hopefully, with this new Rock/Cena angle creative will realize we don't want him as the face. I liked him on Smackdown though, because he was U.S. Champion, kind of mid card status.
@xWWENamix See- I liked Cena as U.S. Champion too, because that's exactly what he is, mid card status. Listening to the crowd these days, the person who should be main eventing, who should be the face of WWE is Randy Orton. I don't really understand why, but the fans blow the roof off the building whenever they hear his theme music. First time I heard it I was like- Wtf? Fans cheering Randy Orton? I don't believe it! But they love Orton, and WWE should take advantage of that.
@xWWENamix It's Stone Cold Steve Austin and Rocky "The Rock" Maivia all over again. They tried to make Stone Cold the ultimate heel, but everyone loved him. They tried to make The Rock the ultimate face, but everyone hated him. Today, Randy Orton, even as heel, is cheered for. John Cena, even though he's face, is booed. If they just did what they did with Stone Cold and the Rock, then they'd have the next big WWE superstars since the Attitude Era.
There was BS from both sides, I'm sure you can find their views on youtube somewhere but if you really want to hear from both Bret and Shawn about their feud I suggest you watch the Shawn Michael's WWE DVD, Bret Hart's DVD, and the documentry Bret was filming when he left WWE "Wrestling with Shadows"
@TeeAiDee The Real Life Feud Started Right After The Ironman Match When Shawn Won. As Earl Hebner Gave him the Belt, Bret Hart Said In His DVD That Shawn Said "Get The Fuck Out the Ring, This Is My Turn to Shine" So At WM13 They Were Suppose to Rematch For the Title Where Brett Was Gonna Win the Belt Back but Shawn Complained about Foot Problems. Thats Why he Didnt Wrestle At WM13. So the next Time they Fight is at Survivor Series 97 and U See How That Turned Out.
@Krocks619 Makes sense. The more research I've done the more info I've been able to pull up. Based on what I've found out, Bret really had no problem with Shawn, but Shawn acted like an arrogant disrespectful punk, and Bret got tired of it.
@TeeAiDee Im Not Surprised. I Respect Shawn For Being Himself But at the Same Time You Dont Have to Be Arrogant When everyone Clearly Knows Brett Hart Is The Greatest Wrestler Of All Time. Its just Weird To Think if They Wouldve Fought at WM13 The Bret Wouldve Been Champion Again BUT. the Stone Cold Match Wouldnt have Happen Which Gave Stone Cold That Final Push He Needed To breakout
@Krocks619 Too true. Without a lot of things that happened, Stone Cold never would've gotten his big push, and WWF would've lost the Monday Night Wars.
The freaky thing about this whole ordeal is that the man in the middle of all this is still alive and kicking. His name is The Undertaker. I mean, he's like the alligator; he survived every evolution this business had, from Hogan to Bret to HBK to Austin to Rock to *puke* Brock to Cena to Batista to Edge...who's next??
@xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 Let me break it down for you into small pieces. There are asterisks before and after the word "puke," meaning I was puking as I mentioned Brock's name.
@MultiPring why brock was an okay wrestler but he was never face of the componay like how orton is now but cena is still face of the company not orton kinda like that brock was but a heel version
@xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 Yeah. He wasn't OK; he was great. Athletic, powerful, mat technician, and all that crap. But he was pushed to the moon way too early and way too fast. I mean, his first title was the WWE Championship right off the bat?? So he got burned out and left the WWE after two years.
@ElsuperCon First off who the fuck r u to call me dumb, ur nobody but anyway man, like i said he might have contributed to it man u need to shut the fuck up. forreal, its obvious shawn couldnt hang with the big boys. look at the history man b4 u talk. if u say sumthing i wont respond i promise this answer was specifically for u but if u wanna be a idiot u wont learn. dollars signs bitch peace.
@toxicrexdawg oohhh dang doo you have a big mouth. All i asked was how he got a bad back from brett. he broke it or whatever in the casket match, but alright dollar sign hella cool. lol
"people don't wanna see a guy with tattoos on his arm and little mirrors and chains.. they wanna see a guy with pink sunglasses and a pink skull on my ass."
@mradamcooley Hahahahaha exactly. I love Bret but it's weird how he was always taking shots at other guys masculinity (Shawn Michaels' flamboyant gimmick, Sting's makeup or "mascara") when he's the only main eventer ever to wear only pink.
every time I watch a video like this, I just think of Vince McMahon, the puppet master, running every little detail and reaping the rewards of all this chaos. I respect his business acumen, but damn he is one evil dude.
Bret is the greatest wrestler to ever wrestle in the WWE. That is a fact, there is no doubt. Anyone can say any different - but true fans recognise true wrestling ability.
im surprised wwe werent getting bigger ratings then they were in 97 with these two feuding on screen. this feud had REAL intense animosity in it. to the point of a real backstage fight happening once. i definitely would have watched wwe over wcw at the time
Does anyone know when Shawn sweet chin music Bret into the wheelchair? I was looking all over for it and found it here. I use to watch wrestling as a kid but when I was in 4rd grade in the fall of 97 I started watching it nonstop all the way till the ecwcw invasion. I distinctly remember watching that superkick when it happened or it might just have been that I saw this promo.
@GordoScarface ive watched that alot now that was the may 12th 97 raw is war. that promo bret was cutting on shawn is on here titled "worst promo ever" as funny as that is LOL search it and its the 3rd video
@roathryder1 rock vs austin was great but definitely not better than bret vs shawn. rock vs austin was only a scripted feud. every bit of animosity bret and shawn "acted out" towards each other on-screen was very real behind the scenes. pretty much everytime bret and shawn were on the mic talking about each other they were doing shoots. and lets not forget things btw them escalating into a real backstage fight. a scripted feud would never come close to having the caliber bret vs shawn feud had.
@ranmanplan3000 Well Shawn never had training in "real" wrestling, much less a father who stretched him in the basement, so it's a bit of an unfair statement, don't ya think?
back then they had real heat alot of it was put forth by VKM stirring it and instigating but they had heat and what happened inthe ring before HBK retired was real they have mended they may not be frieends but they dont hate each other any more
My opinion is that both were excellent at what they did but I preferred Shawn because it's no secret that he was a primadonna and difficult to work with outside of the ring, but Bret just came across as a 'woe is me' kind of guy.
Shawn just got on with his job of entertaining, I feel Bret (in the later stages of his WWF career) was more intent on making people aware of how he was being wronged and just came across as a bitter whiner. All of that is water under the bridge now anyway.
I forgot what an asshole HBK used to be...glad he managed to not only change his ways but also be the one born again I can think of that's NOT an asshole. Much respect to both of these guys, two of the best to ever lace up their boots

777amol 9 months ago
@777amol idk about that hbk was just as great of a worker as bret and concidered underated technically
dakliq420 9 months ago
@dakliq420: HBK was a humble worker, yes, but...only that. Personally for me, he was not under-rated. He got his due ovation for his limited skills. He had great promos (like Hogan) though. Something which Hitman wasn't exactly great at. That's why his skills which were "limited" ***AS ONLY COMPARED TO THE GREAT GUYS I MENTIONED*** were overlooked. The guys I mentioned unfortunately, weren't as famous as HBK.
777amol 9 months ago
@777amol kurt flair eddie jericho steamboat and benoit was just as popular as hbk. i do see what you're saying though, but i do believe hbk was defiantly a much better wrestler than you gave credit to.bret was more technical, but hbk was more complete,he could do it all.

Bret Hart seems a little bit like a cunt in this
Callumjaw 10 months ago
Krocks619 9 months ago

TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee Everyone in the klique and other people said that shawn never turned it off outside the ring, and that Shawn used to be a total dick backstage. As far as anything happening backstage with bret and shawn, I don't know.
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix Huh. Isn't that strange- every single person who seemed to have backstage problems turned out to be the biggest superstars in WWE history. Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Batista, and a few others whose names escape me.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee I definitely believe it's an ego thing, bigger you are, the more of an asshole you are.
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix True dat. But I can't help but notice that once Shawn stopped being such an asshole, he kinda dropped off the main event list.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee Exactly! He lost to Hogan, lost to Cena, didn't win a title (Well, He did but that was short lived.) and he always got the short hand of the stick.
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix Hogan was scheduled to lose to Shawn, but his ego wouldn't allow it. Watch the Hogan vs Shawn match at Summerslam, and you'll see Shawn mocking Hogan by over-selling. A lot. Also, I don't know what Vince is thinking with John Cena. He's constantly trying to make John Cena the face of the WWE, when the fans obviously don't like him. They've booed him since his Wrestlemania match with Triple H. Some say they booed him when he was wrestling with Kurt Angle.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee I remember that. I was laughing so hard. I think Hogan actually considered that a good match. I don't like hogan though. Hopefully, with this new Rock/Cena angle creative will realize we don't want him as the face. I liked him on Smackdown though, because he was U.S. Champion, kind of mid card status.
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix See- I liked Cena as U.S. Champion too, because that's exactly what he is, mid card status. Listening to the crowd these days, the person who should be main eventing, who should be the face of WWE is Randy Orton. I don't really understand why, but the fans blow the roof off the building whenever they hear his theme music. First time I heard it I was like- Wtf? Fans cheering Randy Orton? I don't believe it! But they love Orton, and WWE should take advantage of that.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee I love ORTON! He's one of my favorites. He totally deserves to be the face. John Cena - STEP ASIDE!
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix It's Stone Cold Steve Austin and Rocky "The Rock" Maivia all over again. They tried to make Stone Cold the ultimate heel, but everyone loved him. They tried to make The Rock the ultimate face, but everyone hated him. Today, Randy Orton, even as heel, is cheered for. John Cena, even though he's face, is booed. If they just did what they did with Stone Cold and the Rock, then they'd have the next big WWE superstars since the Attitude Era.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee Exactly! It's the same thing. But of course, they're not going to do it. >.<
xWWENamix 10 months ago
@xWWENamix Well, they're fools, aren't they? Such an opportunity in front of them, to get things as good as they once were, and they won't take it.
TeeAiDee 10 months ago
@TeeAiDee
7Rayo13 10 months ago
Krocks619 9 months ago
@Krocks619 Makes sense. The more research I've done the more info I've been able to pull up. Based on what I've found out, Bret really had no problem with Shawn, but Shawn acted like an arrogant disrespectful punk, and Bret got tired of it.
TeeAiDee 9 months ago
@TeeAiDee Im Not Surprised. I Respect Shawn For Being Himself But at the Same Time You Dont Have to Be Arrogant When everyone Clearly Knows Brett Hart Is The Greatest Wrestler Of All Time. Its just Weird To Think if They Wouldve Fought at WM13 The Bret Wouldve Been Champion Again BUT. the Stone Cold Match Wouldnt have Happen Which Gave Stone Cold That Final Push He Needed To breakout
Krocks619 9 months ago
@Krocks619 Too true. Without a lot of things that happened, Stone Cold never would've gotten his big push, and WWF would've lost the Monday Night Wars.

The freaky thing about this whole ordeal is that the man in the middle of all this is still alive and kicking. His name is The Undertaker. I mean, he's like the alligator; he survived every evolution this business had, from Hogan to Bret to HBK to Austin to Rock to *puke* Brock to Cena to Batista to Edge...who's next??

xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 6 months ago
@xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 Let me break it down for you into small pieces. There are asterisks before and after the word "puke," meaning I was puking as I mentioned Brock's name.
MultiPring 6 months ago
@MultiPring why brock was an okay wrestler but he was never face of the componay like how orton is now but cena is still face of the company not orton kinda like that brock was but a heel version
xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 6 months ago
@xxSILENTTAKEDOWNx1 Yeah. He wasn't OK; he was great. Athletic, powerful, mat technician, and all that crap. But he was pushed to the moon way too early and way too fast. I mean, his first title was the WWE Championship right off the bat?? So he got burned out and left the WWE after two years.
MultiPring 6 months ago
@MultiPring He left WWE because he wanted to try out for the NFL.

@roathryder1 I love those two also, but I don't think the match quality can compare to this.
napalmwedding 1 year ago
@roathryder1 rock vs austin was great but definitely not better than bret vs shawn. rock vs austin was only a scripted feud. every bit of animosity bret and shawn "acted out" towards each other on-screen was very real behind the scenes. pretty much everytime bret and shawn were on the mic talking about each other they were doing shoots. and lets not forget things btw them escalating into a real backstage fight. a scripted feud would never come close to having the caliber bret vs shawn feud had.
