@Songsmirth Old buildings like that will be crawling with secret rooms, disused storage areas, filled-in cavities, stones re-used from obsolete and demolished buildings, etc. To complicate matters, people often overlook what they're familiar with (even in real-life). The ring would be so familiar to everyone working there that it would be merely part of the scenery. Had it been absent after the theft, that might well have been remembered and Musgrave alerted.
@2206411411 Excellent observation. I hadn't thought of it that way but of course you're right. I walked into my home about four months ago and instantly knew something was wrong. Then I realized there was no sound what-so-ever. I hadn't realized how use I was to the buzzing of clocks, refrigerator's motor, etc. Well, it was a fire in the hallway ceiling! The breakers had kicked in so that's why the quiet. It was strange how my body went on alert without conscience thought Anyway, thanks.
Not with the lid of the chamber being open :) lol, basic common sense, if the lid was sealed shut, then yes, the lamp would have eventually gone out, but with the lid being removed allowing air into the chamber, then there is plenty of oxygen to keep the flame burning :)
Ok...wait...I get how he gets trapped there(likely the girl) but why does he die? there would be enough air. The thing is hardly air tight....besides, he didn't suffocate, so whats up?
This is great. You guys gave me negative points, but can't explain why he died without reeally stretching the facts. I love it. At least it means we all agree the story is not logical.
Holmes really does inhert a certain grace. ^^ (I am talking about the boat scene)

The people who put the wood in there weren't curious about a ring on the floor? Maybe too much matter coating it. .

Funny, Musgrave completely reminds me of Captain Hastings from the Agatha Christie, "Poirot" mysteries.

@lollipopfop He did suffocate. In the story the top peice is air tight, or at least heavy enough so no air got in.

Exposure, possibly? He could've frozen. He is, after all, seemingly stuck in one rigid position.
