Are you driving all those LEDs with a serial in / parallel out shift register or something?

Well, this is a display for a mechanical gadget we put in our vacuum setup. The arduino reads 2 rotational encoders, nothing special but saved us a lot of money compared to commercial products. The LEDs are driven by a MAX7221 chip.
